Wow, thank you so much! Cool Shirt! As you know I’m in the middle of replacing my head gaskets. I didn’t quite go to 90 as the digital torque wrench was showing 90ft lbs at almost 90 degrees. I’ll torque one more time to 110.
@gingersnapcustoms

Torque them to 115 at the minimum. The trucks I torque to 120-125 have never had issues and never needed another set of gaskets.

I just blew my head gasket on the drivers side, I used arp head studs and a felpro 9521pt which is .10 over. I did torque my studs to 90, after watching this I am going to go 120.

I suggest Victor Reinz gaskets. Stock thickness. That’s a common fel pro issue.

After blowing a passenger side gasket and then bending some rods, I limit boost to under 10psi until 2k rpms. Low rpm plus high boost, plus 20:1 equals a LOT of dwell time at high pressure for all the pieces to stay clamped together. Fast work on your part!
@gingersnapcustoms
@gingersnapcustoms 3 жыл бұрын
These things like to be spun up and run in high RPMs! This being a 3.42 gear truck is proving difficult to get a turbo to run where I want it to. So far it’s been ok with the HX40 and 14cm housing.

ARP have finer threads on the top threads..even though these studs are slightly larger in diameter, block threads are 1.75 mm pitch, nut threads 1.25mm.
@gingersnapcustoms
@gingersnapcustoms 2 жыл бұрын
Yep. They only go one way. The shaft is also still an M12 just like the factory bolts.
@DT-jz3wn
@DT-jz3wn Жыл бұрын
You're probably onto something. A finer thread would have a higher mechanical advantage and thus a higher clamp force at the same nut torque

My 1995 6.5L just blew a head gasket (at least I hope that is all it is). Started blowing steam out the tail pipe and getting enough coolant in the cylinders it would actually hrydrolock if you aren't careful. Coolant is also getting into the oil. Hopefully will have it torn down tomorrow to see what's actually wrong. I can't believe she would do this to me after only 376K miles!!! 😏

@@caseyflint6815 that’s more of what cracked blocks do than head gaskets. Check cylinder 7 and 8. But I’m betting one split.

Always love the attention to details in your videos. I noticed I could hear your turbo whistle. I was told the 6.5 don't whistle like Fords or so, I can't really hear mine. Would you be because you upgraded your turbo?
@gingersnapcustoms
@gingersnapcustoms 2 жыл бұрын
It’s due to the upgraded non gated HX40 turbo I had put together for it. Sounds like a 6.0 psd.

When head and deck surfaces are surfaced, the machined finish has much better grip on the head gaskets. The sealant used on Fel Pro gaskets cures on the machined surfaces quickly. If this isn't removed, it is possible to have a new gasket fail.
@gingersnapcustoms
@gingersnapcustoms 2 жыл бұрын
All true story’s. In this case I am not the only one who had multiple failures in the same spot. Mine is one of almost a dozen trucks that even with the heads and block correctly prepped blew new Mahle gaskets in the same location on 2-3 gaskets before trying another brand. Lessons learned.

You said to remove the head bolts you start backwards? As in from bolt #17-1? Thank you.
@gingersnapcustoms

Yep. You want to remove them the opposite pattern of when you torque them. It takes a bit more time. But once they are all broke loose you can remove them in whatever order you like.

I have a question about ur head bolt torque? Is the 125 ft lbs for arp “re-usable head bolts” or for stock torque to yield bolts? I don’t want to have to do this again. Im leaving it stock. Just a farm service truck. Hard to find reliable stuff online. You have done it a few times it looks like, and I’m not so sure on stock torque specs anymore.
@gingersnapcustoms
@gingersnapcustoms 8 ай бұрын
I found stock TTY and reusable bolts are stretching wayyy too soon. So I’m using all ARP studs now and torquing them at 120lbs. 50-80-120. Let it sit for 2-3 hours and run over them again at 120. That’s been the most dependable way to keep heads on these.

OK I’m about to put ARP studs in my 6.5 and a holset hx 35. 2 head gaskets on a new engine in 4500 miles. So do I need to torque to 90 and let them sit overnight and then go to 125
@gingersnapcustoms
@gingersnapcustoms 3 жыл бұрын
Torque 40-80-100-125. Let it sit for 1 hour between 100-125. Then let it sit for 2-3 hours and do 125 again. Avoid FelPro gaskets.

Why isn't there intercooler setups for these trucks??? Maybe some cooler air will save them sorry things that's the same shit the old 7.3 idi turbos would do, too hot

If you keep blowing them on the outside of the cylinders, I would wager you have too kuch clamping force in the middle and not enough on the ends. Basically warping the head as you torque it down. Might have to get them fly cut and the block decked to get them back true… remember the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
@gingersnapcustoms
@gingersnapcustoms 2 жыл бұрын
The next set of gaskets are still in the truck and running with no issues. I’m willing to venture it was just an unlucky set of gaskets since I’d done things this way on other engines without issues. But you are right. It could have ended up as a never ending battle had I not looked at the torque and how I cleaned the blocks.
