Like many people, I thought Yamaha sucked because I've only heard / played their $200-250 beginner guitars Got an LL-TA (LL16 with transacoustic) and I'm shocked to learn that Yamaha provides insane value and awesome sound. I have more expensive, big brand name guitars, but the only guitar I reach for is the Yamaha

Hey J.P. Thanks for all the reviews! I ordered an LL16 in this sunburst and got it yesterday. Once again your review was right on the money. The guitar is amazing and the sunburst colours weren’t done enough justice over video… the colours and burst on the LL are absolutely beautiful! Keep the reviews coming bud!!

I got the LL16, and upgraded to a custom made bone nut and saddle from a respected luthier friend, and added Waverly Galaith ( a lightweight plastic that is as dense as bone ) bridge pins, and I can honestly say this guitar has the holy grail of the sought after sound...the " bell tone ". There is a silkiness to these guitars ( from every one I have heard ) that must come from the combination of Engelmann/EIR/improved forward shifted non-scalloped bracing. The folks that designed this new version put the time in to get it right, and, wow, did they ever get it right. This guitar is destined to be one of the greatest acoustic guitars to ever exist. I'm glad I own one.

I love that quote man “it’s like a fingerprint” so true. I’ve played and own Martins, Gibsons, Taylor’s etc. And Yamaha’s have such amazing balanced sound. Sadly I sold my 1969 FG 180 to finance a recording project. I have every intention of buying the new FGX5 😀. Thanks for your content always fun to watch man 👊🏻🔥

As an employee at a guitar store I have had the pleasure of trying these guitars. I can wholeheartedly say this to my ears is possibly the best dreadnought guitar in its price range. The volume you can attain from this specific model is unbelievable, I recommend using a heavy pick as this will most definitely handle what vigour you decide to throw at it. Fantastic quality and sounds phenomenal plugged in as well. As of tomorrow I will be a proud ll16 owner. Excellent video sir !! Regards from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Volume and tone are only a small part of it....they are not easy to play even when set up low.....action is very stiff...... I've refretted two of my other cheap yamaha's and they are wonderful. I will never buy another yamaha....their customer service just plain sucks now.

"Not easy to play even when set up low"...........you've got to be kidding. I don't even know how to respond to that. Because you are literally the ONLY person I've ever heard of who dislikes "the playability" of this model. Literally dozens upon dozens of reviews ( NOT counting the sales rep's of music stores ) on these LL16 models all over youtube, including professional gigging guitarists, even one master luthier who builds custom acoustic guitars ( Driftwood Guitars ), and every last one of them are heaping high praise on the LL16 models in every way. I'm 62 yrs old, and a lifelong guitarist. I gigged all over east/central Florida for 2 decades until I grew tired of the club scene. I love this model. I don't like it quite as much as the 3 high end Japanese Takamine's I've owned & gigged with, but they cost a lot more than this LL16. As was my 814 Taylor. ( I still loved my Tak's a little more. ) The LL16 does have a rather long scale length, but you must have some incredibly weak hands in order to "hate the action/playability" of the LL16 Yamaha's. Quite frankly, I don't think there's a new acoustic out there for $1130 that can beat this LL16, and I believe it's as good if not better than some guitars costing much more. @@cugir321

G’day John, excellent review! I brought home one of these and played it in front of my son - he said it sounded better than my D28 which cost 4 times as much. Of course, I was in total denial, although I really loved the shimmering sound of the Yamaha straight off the shop wall. Over the next few weeks I had to admit he was right and, with the 1.75 inch nut, actually suited my playing style better. I can safely say that , over the past seven years it has got better and better - there you go, for me it blew my Martin out of the water! If you see one of these in the shop, don’t pass it by!

I just put a deposit down one of these today. Was one of, if not the best sounding guitar in my local music store here in Sydney, Australia. Beautiful tone and texture and lovely bass response. What a deal for a full solid guitar with rosewood!! I really like the 5 piece neck and hoping it will keep everything stable here in humid Sydney. I will do a comparison with my Eastman dread on my KZfaq channel once I get it.

Nice review. I too have one of these LL16D models. I do like the sunburst finish, but these days I prefer the clear finished spruce mine has. I only paid $550 for this thing brand new, with case. Crazy deal. I wasn't even shopping for one. When I saw the price (online), with all that abalone trim, all solid wood, A.R.E. top and all, I couldn't believe it. I bought it and never looked back. I'm more of a fingerpicker, and even though it is a dreadnought, I love the tone, balance, and clarity for fingerpicking as well as strumming. The A.R.E. top sounds just great. I agree with you about the great neck they have on these as well. For what I paid, I feel like I stole it.

When stores opened last July ( ? ) (after first lockdown) had some money saved and went to Long & McQuade to buy an FG3 that they had. They also had one LL16 ( 'both' guitars listed for exact same amount - $1090). I played each for about 20 minutes. Both had beautiful sound..... with each having its own unique tone. Because of slight rheumatism in my hands, I discovered that the neck profile on the FG3 was killing my left hand.....thus ended up buying the LL16. ( Absolutely LOVE it !!!! ...so much so that I saved again and went out and bought an LL16-12 (12 string version) )

I used to see Yamahas as great sounding laminate guitars. But then I saw that Bert Jansch and Herb Pedersen played them. So I was really happy to come across this video. So I did two things: bought one of your cds and got the deluxe version of this. My only regret: the D version doesn't come in sunburst.. lol. Thank you JP. Love your music!

I've been a big fan of Yamaha's ever since I got an FG-75 while I was in Vietnam. I've had a few high-end guitars (not nearly as many as you), yet My daily picker is a Yamaha FG-TA sunburst dreadnought. Sounds good before you turn it on but press that button and the built-in chorus and reverb sends you to pickin' heaven. You can't get that tone from an amp. It comes out of the sound hole. Perfect guitar for late night picking when the wife is asleep. The system has sustain that outlasts any guitar I have owned. When the battery dies it feels like your best friend just left the room. FG-TA has veneer back and sides and is made in China while the LL-TA is all solid wood version made in Japan and has 5 piece neck like your LL-16, so basically it is the same guitar you have here but with sound effects built into the guitar. And one final thing, thanks for just now teaching me that Irish double pick pull-off trick :-) Now I just need to learn the rest of the tune...

A good friend lent me one of her LL16s and I fell completely in love with it. Yamahas are very under rated (as you say). I just ordered one from Long & McQuade (sunburst!). I recently bought a LL-TA which is essentially the same guitar with the TransAcoustic stuff inside. I've owned 10 top Martin's and 3 top Taylor's over the years. Upon opening the box with it being brand new at the store from their backstock, the in house luthier set it up with bone saddle and pins, set up for low action on the saddle height and smoothed off the fret ends, oiled the neck and when I tested it out it blew me away. It was far beyond even a D-42 I had and the Taylor's weren't even in the same zip code of performance. Yamaha sure has it going on.

Awesome review, J.P.! I was thinking that I’d like to pick up a Martin GPC-11E, but I really like the build, playability and full sound of the Yamahas. I saw a video you did on Martin guitars, and if I remember correctly, you pointed out how their build quality can be a little inconsistent in the lower end guitars. Think I’m leaning towards a Yamaha now. Great channel. Thanks!

You sold me! Based on this review I bought one and it's in black. I love it as it is but I have an appointment with my luthier to install a bone nut and saddle, do a setup, and fit unslotted bone bridge pins and slot the bridge. However my luthier is in such demand that he's doing the work next January. That gives me plenty of time to research bridge pin materials so I may choose something other than bone. Thanks for the excellent review. BTW, this guitar has Yamaha's process similar to torifaction.

John I have this exact guitar along with two other LL16's and two other Yamaha's. 5 in total. I have the same love affair with these instruments. First guitar I ever touched was a Yamaha. I gotta say the one your reviewing here if its anything like the one I have, she's so so much louder then my other two LL16's, like a very notable difference. The other two are a standard natural finish and the other one is a LL16 deluxe. The sunburst is much louder. They all sound fantastic. 🤷‍♂️ I have named some of my guitars as well. Her name is Nibbs. Like the candy cuz of the colour of the red in the finish looks the same colour as nibbs candy lol. Cheers 👍

Every time I open my LL16ARE sunburst's, case, I have to try not to drool. It sounds great every time I play it. Really sounds like the GSWJ video (the guitar not my playing) I've played many Martins, Gibsons and Guild (which I always liked) and this Yamaha holds it's own with any of them. I got it here in Australia about 2 years ago 2nd hand for AU$600 ( about US$115). A bargain. I've been playing for nearly 50 years and never thought I'd end up with a Yamaha as one of my best guitars. 😁 Just love John's picking both flat picking and fingerstyle. What a man 🤠

Thanks, i enjoy the odd stuff i see. Before CoV i was looking for a small Yamaha LJ6. Gave up; no show in 'straya. Was looking in eBay, so search sat there. 3+ years later i get an eBay email saying 'available'. Located in a shop in Nowra, south of Sydney a bit. Done. Too far to go and test. When arrived, zero disappointment. Top wood... Engelmann spruce. My only other is a S Korea Crafter GA7/N. Cedar top. Similar size/shape to Yami. Each give me different buzes. Thanks for your show ups. 😌

I am a proud owner of an LS-TA. I absolutely fell in love with it as a guitar, but then I turned on the built in reverb...😲 I couldn't get the money from my pocket fast enough to buy it! The LL-16 was an amazing guitar, but I prefer the smaller bodied instruments. I played both before making my decision, but it just came down to body size. I always enjoy hearing your thoughts on different guitars, John; Our taste in sound is very similar. It's also great to get the little history lessons hidden throughout the video. I bought a Yairi FYM66HD based off your last demo, and I've had it for about a month now...I absolutely love it! Thanks for the sweet reviews. 🐰💜🎸🎶🤝✌

We fell in love with the same guitar Jack. Do you have the sunburst version like I do or the vintage yellow one?

Dude, I am still waiting to get my hands on the beefier LL-TA. But my mind is blown every single time I turn on the reverb or chorus on the demo guitars even though my mind knows what to expect. I am just hoping and praying that one day just one day there will be a transacoustic guitar made in the Hammamatsu custom shop. I would camp out in front of a music store to get that.

I’m waiting for the LL-16 12 string guitar to get back in stock. I’ve played other 12 strings, Yamaha has extremely comfortable guitars to play. I currently own three FG series Yamaha guitars. I feel like the LL series is like a graduation into a big boy guitar. I’ve played Epiphones, I’ve played Ovation, neither of those two brands have matched the quality I get with Yamaha.

I own one of these in the same finish. Beautiful guitar. I was surprised by how bright it sounds, not in an bad way, it has a lot of clarity to it.

Sweet guitar! I bought a yammy DW20 from the late 90s second hand a few years ago and it sounds beautiful and looks beautiful. Is the DW series the equivalent of the ll series ? I’ve tried to find info on line but it’s sparse.

I love my LL 6. I upgraded my tuners and put bone nut/ saddle on her as well. Yammie gets as much play time as my d18ge.

The poor man’s D-45. Great guitar I’ve owned this exact one for six years. It’s one of my every day guitars I put on a stand next to my bed.

New sub. Would love your opinion of the trans acoustic guitars by Yamaha. I have the FG and I am truly blown away by the depth of the sound. I know it's not all solid wood, but man, she's good. I think you would agree

The trans acoustics are too gimmicky for me. The FG3 and 5 red labels are all solid if that is what you have.

I have the LLTA version of this guitar and it is awesome. John how do you think these guitars stack up against the FG5 series that are MIJ? I have the FG5X on my radar, but I'd be disappointed if it's not at least a little better than my LLTA. Granted, it is mahogany vs the rosewood on the LLTA so it's a bit of a different tonal pallet, but it's a bit more expensive and it's Japanese, so I would expect it to be a little better.

I picked up an LS16 rosewood years ago….it blows everyone away for a small body size….one of the best guitars under $1k.
