Grand Theft Auto is an action-adventure video game developed by DMA Design and published by BMG Interactive. It is the first title of the Grand Theft Auto series and was released in October 1997 for MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows, in December 1997 for the PlayStation and in October 1999 for the Game Boy Color.

The Gameboy version actually stacks up comparatively well. It has similar geometry and colors in comparison with the other three, and for an 8-bit system it keeps up pretty well speed-wise.

thanks for the comparison! i actually think that msdos one looks a little sharper than the windows one, and i didn't get any crackling audio when playing it

FUN FACT: The GBC version of GTA 1 can be played on an original 1989 Gameboy that had no color, therefore it'll just be in a green tan.

That's not true. Trying to play a GBC game on the original Gameboy will result in a message pop up saying that you must insert it into the Gameboy Color

@@Truebolt5750 Not all of them, if the cartridge is black and looks like an original Gameboy cartridge, then it was made for the original but enhanced for the Gameboy color. GTA is one example.

I never knew it came out for gameboy color. Wow and I'm a big gameboy fan. I had GTA 1 on PS1. I remember an NES game from early 90's that looked like GTA. Almost laid the blueprint down.

So I guess PC is the way to go for playing this game for the 25th Anniversary on Friday since that has the highest resolution.

PC is probably the best one, but i have to say that gameboy has much more languages. PS1 looks terrible, it looks like a SNES game and you cannot even replay cutscenes.

Yeah they didn’t bother making new sprites and instead poorly directly converted the pc sprites to 32-bit ps1 sprites

@@muteclaude6969 Hi, since 4 months, I tried the Dos version on the Dos Emu app that looks like a clone of Lumuroid. And the graphics are better. But on the PS1 version that that app also run there are handy safe states that makes it more convenient especially at the beginning.

@@RussianBot007 Yep? Good to know, thanks a lot. Eh, sadly the retroarch app doesn't or didn't at least a few months ago alow mapping my external keyboard. It always assumed it was a sort or SixAxSix controller instead. Unplayable sadly. You reckon they fixed that problem perhaps? Cheers

@@muteclaude6969 ??? PC even without mods has way higher resolution than PS1. PS1 is like 320x240, and PC without mods reaches 1024x768. The sprites are also way higher quality on PC.

GBA is nostalgic as hell tho its still 2d unlike other versions of Gta 1 like on the other platforms the buildings if you look closely are 3d models but 2d only rooftop in GBA and all characters are same brown pants white shirt brown hair but I'd go for PC

I like the PC version because the cities and other environments are more detailed, the PS1 version the three towns are more colorful and less detailed, and trains plus train missions are PC exclusive and they were removed from the PS1 version because of hardware limitations.

Ps1 version the best version for that sweet save state power purely because you can’t repeat missions if you fail. So glad they got rid of that in gta 2. The one and only thing I hate about this game.
