Welcome to the CodeX Cantina where our mission is to get more people talking about books! What exactly happened? It’s not really a book you can spoil so it is non-spoiler in natire. It's not a novel. It has no characters per se. But it's wonderful. It's Brazilian. It's Clarice. She paints with words here and escapes definition. Let's talk about the enigmatic Agua Viva today by Clarice Lispector!

‘é’ means ‘is’. I haven’t read Água Viva in Portuguese yet though. But I will when I go to Brazil and get a copy.

Thanks so much. Yeah, I was wondering about that part and the "one" vs "two"

Thanks to your channel, I had the chance to know and read CL. And I read Near to the Wild Heart, The Passion According to G.H., An Apprenticeship, The Hour of the Star and now Agua Viva. The Hour of the Star became my favorite, there's also a short movie version of it on KZfaq if you'd like to visualize the novel😊 (in Portuguese, with English subtitles if I'm not mistaken) For Agua Viva, I've to say yes, it's indeed different. I found it a bit difficult to follow, we understand there are subtle connections between the paragraphs, yet it was difficult to catch the abstract meanings behind them. Adorned with deeply philosophical phrases, for me this book was rather like a poetry with beautiful verses. On pg 65, there's this quote 'I write to you in disorder, I well know. But that is how I live. I only work with the lost and found'. I also think this book is for avid readers who will enjoy digging further to find the treasures in it.

Thanks for this. You really do it justice but also give potential readers fair warning. At times reading it I felt like Lispector was dragging the words out of her own entrails and yet producing a thing of beauty.

As soon as you said the book is about nothing, I knew the Seinfeld jokes were coming haha. Heidegger also said something about the word "is" being the most important word in any language.

"We talked about what the book doesn't have. Characters. Plot." I laughed at this. Not a very good selling point. Wouldn't make a good tag line. "Buy this book. It doesn't have characters. Oh, and, no plot also. Just, you know, kinda letting you know up front. All sales are final. Read the fine print."

the first publishings in English were called Stream of Life. Jellyfish would be the best title. A Jellyfish has the largest amount of its body made of water. So yeah, the idea of something that cannot be completly "trapped" in the matter, in a shape, fluidity would be the word

Excellent and thanks for answering that quesiton! Do you know if that part of the book says the most important word is one character? That's a big translation difference as in English it says two characters and I was curious if it says one in Portuguese...
