+Special Snowfake Because My Dinner with Andre is overrated and the Stewart and Alan Show has a ring to it. :-P No seriously it's because they're both fascinating conversationalists and are as funny as hell for starters, (although Moore is way funnier, see The Bojeffries Saga) and cover topics ranging from genre and writing and Brexit in an engaging manner and besides who else could link the Olympics and a dead cat in a basic chat over a cuppa?

social media is killing sarcasm and irony because there is no way to type a tone of voice. everything is taken as literal, and that to me seems a step back developmentally

One can impart tone via style. Go refresh your memory with a read of quips by Oscar Wilde, Dorothy Parker, or a writer akin to those two.

what a load of rubbish. So sarcasm and irony have only been documented since the advent of audio based forms of mass dissemination? Could sarcasm and irony only be communicated in person prior to the radio being invented? Your choice of words communicates the tone of the sentiment you're trying to express far more than your delivery, I find.

I have had to download an "B-dum-tish" sound affect app to my phone just so any dead pan sarcasm I might slip into conversation isn't taken literally by people with an irony deficiency... and it is a shame to have to break character etc etc etc

The mainstream media/ press is dying because of the internet. As a desperate measure they recruit 'edgy' and 'alternative' people like Lee and the other bloke to try and cling to readers. They fit the bill because they are a bit edgy, but in a very establishment friendly kind of way. They will never actually say anything which actually rocks the boat. Like they would never say war is bad, or the official story of 7/7 was a load of nonsense, or politicians are just puppets and the real power lies behind them and can never be elected out of office.

Why does Stewart Lee think people who aren't Scottish can't have an opinion on the Scottish referendum?

@tomwilko7841 7 жыл бұрын
jsv I'm assuming he was commenting on the humour to be found in so many right wing columnists producing heartfelt 'brother scotland' essays attempting to somehow influence Scottish voters to stick with us totally oblivious to the fact that such naked patriarchy was the main reason the referendum was called for and actually galvanised the nationalists arguments...of course theyre allowed an opinion, what is absurd is that they thought their opinion mattered in a referendum conducted in a different country
@chefmark1751
@chefmark1751 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's what he's saying. I think he's saying have your opinion, but drop the whole "as a Scott" act. Of course English people can have a say on the UK, but it's kind of silly to pretend your presenting the Scottish point of view because of your grandma. That's how I heard it anyway.

I feel embarrassed for Stewart Lee here. I know they are probably mates, but watching Lee drivel on about his book while sitting opposite a genuinely great writer is toe curling. It's like someone discussing their mindless doodles with Matisse. I hope at least Lee did another video where he discusses Moore's book.

Stewart Lee is a brilliant comedian but these columns were just so fucking bad, they were unreadable. It's like they were written in Orcish or something. I don't approve because the Guardian is already in a state, getting paid a load of money to drag things down even further, just as some kind of misreading of Guy Debord or something... just no ...
