Excellent explanation of the structure and pattern of play. I think intentionality is very hard to predict in football. My sense is that Arsenal preferred to clog out the middle and let city pass to mahrez, who was the newest player on the pitch and didn't always make the best move available.

Yo Piotr, you stay slayin' with these vids, as you normally do ("Freenandinho" killed me lol, I watched that game live, and whenever he had the ball in the first half I was singing Stevie Wonder's "Free" like a maniac) Allow me to pick your brains real quick. I've watched both City games in this early season so far, and I really can't decide: how would you rate their tactics as compared with last season? I know it's a bit early to say, but from what I've seen, it seems like they're tapping into some even higher level shit this year, in terms of transition play, offensive contribution by defenders (the role Mendy played in that game was very interesting, even more so against Hudd Hudd).. I mean it was just ridiculous, like I know Arsenal to be very brittle under pressure, but goddamn, it seemed like they just never had any chance to keep up whatsoever... So what's your takeaway? Early season game, making our reading of the dynamics inconclusive? Rinse-repeat this season for City, comfortably walking over people's corpses? I err on the side of City actually getting stronger this year...

This video shows that Emery isn't the solution, Klopp's teams act differently, they never allow City that much space, time on the ball and possession especially not at Anfield. You can say that Emery didn't have the players that he wanted in the beginning but he had two windows now plus a January window where they just signed Dennis Suarez instead of trying to get rid of Xhaka and replace him with Doucoure or another dynamic midfielder, he still doesn't realize that Xhaka isn't the solution in central midfield if you want a high energy team with high pressing as well as athleticism and power which is absolutely vital if you want to compete against Liverpool and City. Xhaka also loses the ball quite a lot especially in dangerous areas because of his low level concentration and sloppiness, something that the Liverpool and City midfielders don't have in their game as they are very concentrated and close to perfect in terms of accuracy and passing. Xhaka lacks agility and mobility as well hence why he isn't a solid enforcer like Fabinho, Henderson or Fernandinho
