I also passed out in 1989 June 22nd. Waterloo company 5 platoon. I was stick orderly. I absolutely loved every single minute of my 1st year training. I will never forget my time as a Grenadier. I left in 1996. Wokery was starting to tear its ugly head back then. Things were starting to change. Wars became about elitism’s business ventures and NOT about our Queen and Our country.

Drill and turnout was excellent. I joined the army at 15, not in the Jnr Leaders or the household Div but the jnr Para Coy. We didn’t concentrate on drill as much as the Guards but on physical fitness and toughening up. You did not get issued your beret but had to earn it which wasn’t easy lol But a great life for a young man

I was in the Junior Musicians Wing, Pirbright from 1969 and we used to see the Paras training sometimes during PT at the hill/rough country area. Used to scare the life out of us!

2:25 Sport the nest head avoiding the camer. Shifty bugger. 5:17 Speaking as a former RSM, that is some cracking drill. Those arms are near perfect. And they're not even the troops passing out. Then you see the lads passing out and . . . wow. That halt was superb. I always considered myself a field soldier more than a drill and duties guy, so viewed drill as a necessary evil, but always liked to get it right whenwe had to do it. These guys are spot on. Great effort.

The junior leaders did 12 months down the depot as opposed to senior recruits who only did 6 and I think this is why their drill is spot on. Poor beggars imagine having to do a full year down the depot.

Sadly, like everything else standards have dropped even for the guards and as for the Royal horse artillery and lifeguards. They may as well change their name to the girl guides as they have that many in it.
