On this leg of my Guatemalan adventure, I search for the last speakers of the Uspanteko language in the Highlands of Guatemala. On the way, I encounter a Spanish rap battle on the streets of Chichicastenango, and later on I have some amazing street tacos in Xela.
Locations in this video:
Chichicastenango
Quetzaltenango
Zunil
Uspantan

I am glad you are showing to the world how Marvelous our Country is. As a Guatemalan I am proud to know you even try to speak Kiche, one of the more than 25 Alive Mayan Languages. Congrats and keep going.

I love your country, and live with my best friends near Mazate in Suchi. I also love to see someone preserving a bit of the culture of the various Maya communities. K'iche will continue, but I fear some of the Mayan languages may die out. 😊

4,000!? That's the population of an average American high school. I hope these Mayan languages never die!

Some have already died off. There’s a possibility the descendants of the dead language is alive but it’s tongue is now extinct. Guatemala used to boast 24 Maya Languages.. now there’s only 22. And 2 are at a HIGH risk of dying. Assimilating in the last 20 years in Guatemala isnt helping & the years before that was the Silent Maya Holocaust & BEFORE that was a American banana company that enslaved the ppl. It’s one thing after another. I pray a future for the Maya cause it’s not looking too bright

I always wanted to explore dying languages, but I was too anxious to approach people. This video is such an inspiration to do that.
@1nesoch
@1nesoch 3 жыл бұрын
Anxious ! from what ? All you need to do, especially if you're American is to : 1- pick your country of interest. 2- go to website and search for either US peace Corps or US Foreign Exchange Program, between US and your country of interest. 3- Reach out to one of those 2 groups, and tell them your aspirations about dying languages, and ask if they can arrange someone they trust on the ground there, to guide and protect you. You'll be amazed by results, and you won't spend your cash. They'll sponsor your work. Just turn it into research rather than just hobby. You'll thank me later

to start with, by looking at the names of the humble people you interviewed, if you look at the nomenclature, you can see the influence of religion. btw you have got a good way of creating a rapport with your interviewees.

Read Ronald Wright's great book Time Among the Maya. Also The Last Lords of Palenque by Victor Perera and Robert Bruce. It is about the Lacondon Maya who lived traditionally in a pre-colombian manner in the jungles of Chiapas up to recent times.

to use your catch phrase 'And boy', the concept of Acculturation is an intriguing subject. It is not because people don't want to speak the language. There are social and economic rationales behind it.
