I was born in Guernsey, evacuated to Lancashire during the war and returned in 1945. Stayed there till I was married in 1956. We have been back a few times but now I live in NZ, my husband passed away 7 years ago. I am enjoying seeing all the old familiar placed once again. Thank you for what you are doing. My wife works for M&S and although you have them over there she can't get her staff discount. Apparently the are all franchise shops. In fact when we first went to the Channel Islands in the 70/80's there wasn't any M&S. It had a different name but all the goods had the M&S brand. When you were walking along the Glategny Esplanade you crossed over by a pub I think it was the Ship and something. We were in there back in 82 and we were watching the telly. On it was the QE2 coming back from the Falkland Islands. It's these little things that stick in your mind.

Wowsers, I can't believe Dix Neuf is still there - awesome Cafe which was also a lot smaller 20 years ago so really chuffed to see them expand into the neighbouring units :D Sad to see soooo many empty shops :( I really had hoped the Island would have escaped our Mainland Towns' fates! When did the market turn into a mini shopping centre??? I used to love wandering around on market days and picking up freshly dressed crabs and huge bunches of flowers :D I'm pretty sure where Hotel Chocolat is now, used to be a Toni & Guy hairdressers??!! (It was certainly along that stretch as you walked down to Dix Neuf ;) )

You'll be telling me next The Wellie Arms is now some bistro, eh? Were your heading to The White Rock Cafe at the end? Cor la, there was some real nouvelle cuisine there, eh? Hi Ross Its sad that some shops have closed down that have been there for years, i had a couple of suits made in Burton's and that was back in the 1980s so i guess the younger generation want more trendy. I can remember walking around the arcade shops with my mum on a Saturday or should i say being dragged around and one of the shops thats changed is the model shop that was in the corner near the steps that took you down to the church and my treat was to get a model to build ,like a plane or a boat great shop in its day, well for kids anyway, also i see Boots is still there thats good and also creasey other then that most of the shops have changed Great video Ross as always keep em coming . I remember spending a bit in The Body Shop in St Peter Port and momentarily forgetting I'd got to fit this in my luggage and get on a plane! (Our nearest one had just closed at the time). Love the Weighing shop and think I would no doubt spend all day in there! Although I don't think I would be let loose on that peanut butter machine!! I'll take your heart as a yes. Okay, I'll start with three questions. Do you think Guernsey would've had arcade games in the 1980's? How dangerous is it to jump or fall into the English Channel, especially the distant water from St. Peter Port? My story involves a fake death, and I once read that falling into an ocean can crush you. And is it true both English and French people live in said city and country? They "automatically" (I speak loosely) speak both languages?

More than a fifth of people living in Guernsey are at risk of living in poverty, according to a new States report. Twenty two percent of the population, that's 12,000 people, survive on £18,000 a year after rent, mortgage and tax payments. Fifteen percent of people earn £12,000 a year after deductions. A third of children living in the island are classed as being at risk of relative income poverty.
