I’d say the film is deep and has a greater message to it but it just doesn’t seem as well executed as its inspirations like the king of comedy or some of its peers like parasite. Don’t get me wrong though it’s still a great movie and it does genuinely touch on some deeper meanings.

He also hates doing sequels so he often insists on his character being killed off so effectively and clearly that there's very little chance he could come back

It's not the masterpiece claimed. I thought it was a solid portrayal of a mentally ill person fighting to get through day to day life, and ultimately failing, but that's all. It seldom rises above the level of revenge-wank for victims of bullying.

My biggest problem with the movie is that Arthur Fleck is not the Joker, he doesn't like the Joker or does anything that the Joker would do except laugh and kill people but that's it. If it was called 'Arthur Fleck' and not 'Joker' I wouldn't dislike it as much. Also, Thomas Wayne isn't Thomas Wayne.

Do you guys not think that the film is very relevant to what's happening now? It's not solely about a white mentally ill man - if you stop looking at stories and narratives with the main protagonist solely representing just the people they look like and look beyond that then you'll soon realise that his character represented built in anger to a system that suppresses those marginalised and and overlooked or humiliated and silenced, no matter who they are. It was never about him committing murder or crimes, his story was reactionary, and actually his final moment in the show was to go on and kill himself, but he realised the joke would be on him in that case, and in that moment of further ridicule decided to place the repressed anger out on the person benefitting from it. That, along with the whole tension building up in the city from the start of the film is what caused the riots, eerily similar to what can actually happen right? Just the fact that people from multiple countries were using his face paint speaks volumes that his character doesn't just represent white mentally ill people. The parallels of what's happening now with the riots are striking to what happens in the Joker, the only difference is the spark that caused it. I think those that disliked Joker refuse to see who the film actually speaks for or they're just ignorant if they call it shallow and ironically not very subtle.
