It’s not that they won’t grow, they just won’t produce unless grafted with a plant that is fruiting. The chances of getting a seed that will produce fruit are so small. Grafting also helps them produce more quickly, (within 5 years i think)

Thank you!!! I’d like to add my 2 cents from growing them in Jalisco,Mexico. The trees also require pollination from each other. Some won’t fruit at all bc it’ll be two “females” or two “male” near each other. An avo tree can grow as tall and wide as a pine. It’s better to grow several saplings on a dedicated plot of land with well draining soil, heavy rain and lots of sun. Avocados are heavy feeders that require annual soil amendments, fertilizers And pesticides. I’d stick to growing lemons/limes in the backyard. They don’t take up so much space, will self pollinate and make very beautiful ornamentals. 😊

@@YamiLunaria that is possible. Certain seeds carry their mother plants gene specially in their native climate. We used to have mango trees and grown mango from seeds,those were good mangoes. Sometimes the tree did not bear identical fruit, we would call it wasted seed or something like that in our mother tongue.But now if I want to have the exact tree from a supershop mango pith,I have to buy the grafted plant. Agriculture has changed vastly over the years,it's actually quite fascinating. With seeds,there is always a chance of hit or miss,but with grafts success is almost inevitable provided the soil and climate are favourable.

I was gifted a few Cuban avocado, they were huge so I decided to grow the seed. I had 2 grow pretty big and I later gifted one to my moms friend and I kept the other one. I planted that during the seed in beginning of the pandemic so it kinda big now. While I may die before a avocado will ever grow, it will be here for my mom and sister to enjoy one day.

The thing is, if it doesn't fruit properly, or you want a head start, you can graft on a branch from other trees once it's big enough. Personally if that were my goal id plant the seed directly in the ground to develop better tap roots, but it's not a total loss to try.

You can grow a avocado plant and it is a beautiful plant but you won’t get any avocado’s on it till like eight years and it gets to be a big ten foot tree plant t for the house.. but if you can somehow find a female seed and a male seed and plant them together you might get avocados faster
@dutchik5107
@dutchik5107 2 жыл бұрын
Well. The male and female plants are just a necessity for any fruit to occur. Ever. As they are not self pollinating.

I've been told to have gifted hands cuz I grew avocado plants in 2-3 weeks time. U just need to make sure that the seed is peeled and kept very moist and warm so I used a Ziploc bag with wet cotton ( u gotta trust the process because it will seem to be spoiled but the root sprouts super quick this way) then I transferred to a small pot with lightly fertilized soil and a Ziploc bag over it and that worked for me

I have an avocado tree that my grandparents grew I'll ask them how they did it
@stefan514
@stefan514 Жыл бұрын
You don't need to ask them. It's pretty easy to find reliable information about it. Growing from seed is a genetic lottery in some cases. Avocado is one of those cases. The chances of hitting a combination that produces edible fruit is super low. You can either play the lottery, graft a known variety in your plant or buy an already grafted plant from a store.

As someone with six avocado trees in my yard that grew from seed, don't worry it will bear. Grafting makes the trees bear faster true, but you can absolutely get great fruit from one grown from seed. Where I come from most people save the seeds and plant them in the ground if they really like that specific type of avocado and they grow perfectly, it just means you have a long wait ahead of you, but it's worth it.

Avocados, like apples need to be grafted. The genetic information in the seed is not identical to the tree it came from.

I have an avocado plant in my yard, it's been there since I was little, because my grandparents planted it when they built the house and moved here, when my mom was 10. It's been nearly 40 years since, they had to wait but we eventually got avocados and we get them once, sometimes twice yearly now. And we've grown many plants from the seeds, one of which is getting rather large, although it has a good few more years until it produces anything. It is possible, you just have to wait a really long time

my great grandmother grew an avocado tree in her New York apartment for years . because of the changing seasons it never gave off any fruit but it didn't stop the big ass tree to hunch over once it had reached the roof. after her death, shortly before my lil sister was born, the tree had started to wither and was considered a safety hazard if it would start getting root rot. Since no one was willing to care for it, it was cut down and removed from our old building. Nobody could grow and save plants like that amazing woman could. And as my sister grows up, i see that they both share that amazing gift to nurture life.Thats probably why they share the same name.
