I thought Varso Tower would be among the easier ones to guess since its name sounds like Warsaw. The photo doesn't really do it justice, but Varso is currently the highest skyscraper in the EU and the highest in Europe in general, if we exclude Russia. I recognized Italy (Milan) because of the green building next to it. And MOL reminded me of Hungarian oil company. Other ones though - had no idea.

Varso Tower was probably the least obvious. For many years PKiN was the highest building in Poland and now when thinking about what is the highest building in Poland, everybody thinks about PKiN. People are not used to Varso being higher (many haven't even heard about it overtaking PKiN). Also, V is not in Polish alphabet.
@bluemonday3185
@bluemonday3185 Жыл бұрын
@@kacperdadela8538 Although V does not appear in Polish alphabet there still was a pretty obvious resemblance. Varso - Varsovia - Warsaw - Warszawa - its all very close. As much as I can agree on people being possibly confused with PKiN not being the highest building in Poland anymore, it's absolutely not true that it was the LEAST obvious. Be for real now...

Fun fact about the DC Tower 1 in Vienna (Austria), there was supposed to be a second one to be built, but for some stupid reason they had only allowed the one half to be built, the complete version of the design with the second half would have looked SO MUCH COOLER. Also, you can see parts of the Vienna International Center (AKA UNO-City Building) behind the DC Tower, it's one of the main UNO Buildings apart from New York and Geneva
@impaledloaf
@impaledloaf Жыл бұрын
The reason for this is actually a quite simple one: DC1 alone created so much additional office space, that building DC2 straight away, or just shortly after would have caused a massive oversupply on the market. DC 1 was finished 8 years ago and I'm not sure, if all of that office space has even been rented yet. Although construction on DC 2 will begin shortly (perimeter walls of the site were finished a few weeks ago) the really idiotic thing about it is that they ditched the original design, completely ruining the twin-tower / split crystal aesthetic that Dominique Perrault originally intended.

I'm living not far away from Lakhta Center (Russia, St. Petersburg). It was erected in St. Petersburg with the only goal in mind - to outshine Moscow where previously was erected the tallest skyscraper in Europe. Now the tallest scyscraper in Europe is located in the Europe's most nothern megapolis where it looks rather unnatural. The vast majority of city's cultural elite were strictly against the erection since they thought that this skyscraper will ruin the city's skylline. Thus the location of skyscraper was moved to the notherrn part of city with no sights of cultural sugnicance aroud it. It is still can be seen from within the city's cultural center but not as much as it would be on previous proposed location. It is located close to the bank of the gulf so if someone looks at it from across the gulf it kinda resebles the giant ship leaving the port. Not too far from it was build the soccer stadium resembling by its shape the giant spaceship. So when soneone wants to picture St. Petersburg as "modern" city they show photos with stadium and skyscraper together. Sorry for my bad English.

Smáratorg tower in Iceland is in an awful area near a shopping mall and surrounded by nothing but highways and parking lots. It's even in a valley so it doesn't look impressive. Bosnia was easy to guess, it was written in the name of the website in the lower righthand corner of the picture, and besides that Avaz is the name of their daily newspaprer. Varso was also easy to connect with Warsaw (at least when you read it out loud), MOL was easy for me because I passed next to MOL petrol station on my way to work this morning, and regarding the Ć letter, you can find it only in Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro, therefore the number of guesses was limited there, Č letter is more common than Ć and you can find that one in some other Slavic and some Baltic languages. Finland was also kind of obvious because of double K in the name, Finish has some combinations like that which are not too common in other languages.

The Roche Tower is quite new and was built in Basel, so not the French speaking part of the country. The name stems from it being the headquarters of the huge pharmaceutical company "Roche". It's quite controversial here in the city, as Basel has a really old city core and it's "skyline" across the Rhine is quite remarkable. So naturally most people were opposed to the huge skyscraper dropped right in the middle of that. But on the other handside Basel has a huge economical benefit from Roche being there so nobody wants to oppose it too much lol. Having lived most of my life here it was hard to get accustomed to the tower but now it's kind of become a part of the city.

I've also seen the Sky Tower in Bucharest before. It's located right next to a shopping mall. Apparently it was designed to tolerate strong earthquakes (Bucharest is in direct line of sight from a very earthquake-prone region of Romania and has been severely impacted by previous strong earthquakes e.g. 1977). Today I learned that it's also the tallest building in all of Romania! :D This was a very cool quiz! I really enjoyed watching the video and I learned about some new tall buildings today.

Since the Eiffel Tower is a building, and it's 99 meters higher than the Tour First, it should on the list instead of the Tour First. I would've been very surprised if the City of Paris and the French authorities had let any bulding overshadow the Eiffel Tower (so I checked)

About those buildings that you haven't guessed. Hungary was to easy because MOL is on of the biggest Oil and Gas companies in Europe... and it is hungarian company. That Smáratorg Tower I would gues some of the nordic nation because of that name. BTW. I did not understand why you were not guessing only the smallest countries (like Luxemburg, San Marino,... etc.) for those smallest buildings at first... it was to easy. ;) And thanks for those nice words about Bratislava / Slovakia. :D

European cities and countries don't tend to pride themselves on tall buildings, with some exceptions like London and Frankfurt, so it follows most of these are really obscure abroad I live in Germany and only got 40%, mostly relying on city names and languages, and getting tired of brute-forcing the rest Some language-related notes: Polish uses the letter W instead of V, and Hungarian doesn't allow consonant clusters at the beginning of words

MOL stands for Magyar Olaj, it is the HQ of the Hungarian Oil company. Fun fact, Hungary had a strict law on how tall buildings can be, and they gave a special permission for it to be built since it is taller than the allowed 100m. Unesco also threatened Hungary for it to lose world heritage title on the Danubes sight in Budapest, since the tower is visbile from the city centre, although it is located in the south of the capital.

The Norwegian one sucks. I remember going there as a kid just to ride the glass elevator and get a view of Oslo, which was fun back then. But after having been to the US it's very underwhelming, like you said, pretty much just an average hotel. We also went to the Eifel Tower when I was a kid, and it's three times taller than the Oslo Plaza, really puts it into perspective.

The AZ Tower in Czechia is not in Prague, but in the second largest city Brno. It's kinda in the middle of nowhere, guess we built it so people would make fun of us less or we could be first in something (making fun of Brno is something like the only in Ohio meme, but it doesn't have an expiration date and everyone does it)

What Sporcle should do is to have each answer on the side in a list, and as you answer, they get removed. This would be an optional thing to display to make it easier. This would be valid for when you do quizzes like these were you know all the answers, just not where they go. To make it more interesting, quizzes like these could also include fake answers (optional to include). Not really valid in this quiz, but more valid in other quizzes.
