A vacation of Lance Egans Thread Frenchie, the only difference being instead of dubbing I use Gulff Ambulance Resin in Fl. Orange for a wing pad.
This is an excellent producer and a staple in my personal/guide box. I know it will work for you.
Tying starts at 1:20
Hook: FullingMill Jig Short #16-20
Bead: FM Slotted Tungsten Silver 2.4 in this video but anywhere from 3.3-2.4mm
Thread: Semper Fli Nano Silk 18/0 in brown
Tail: 4-6 Coq de Leon Fibers
Rib: UTC wire size brassie in sculpin olive
Wing Pad: Gulff Ambulance Resin Fl. Orange

I got the Ambulance too and it was wax too thick and sticky. Almost impossible to make a clean Hotspot with it but after talking with Gulff i got a bottle from the new Batch with the thin metal applicator and it was perfect in my opinion. Same with the VarNish from Gulff, way too thick for a brushable Varnish but the new batch with yellow label is better, a bit more liquid.

Speaking of resins, could you do a vid on how you find and repair wader leaks? Others out there are not up to AboutTrout quality standards. Could do a whole series about how guides fix (or don’t fix) gear.

Nice tie. My question is why did you put wing case on the bottom.
@AboutTrout
@AboutTrout 3 жыл бұрын
Great question . When insects drift they tumble through the current showing both the back and the underside of their bodies . Putting the wing case on the underside also speeds up the tying process .
@HB-bc5po
@HB-bc5po 2 жыл бұрын
I know I'm late to this video and a newbie at tying, but shouldn't the "wing case" be on the other side of the fly? I mean the jig will fish with the hook upright, putting the wing case on the bottom of the fly? I see them all tied this way, I'm imagining I'm missing something here, is that how they would naturally orient in the water??
@AboutTrout
@AboutTrout 2 жыл бұрын
Devin explains this better than I can but check out this link for the answer. www.tacticalflyfisher.com/blog/wingcases-shellbacks-and-wings-to-invert-or-not-to-invert-that-is-the-question/ on top of that it makes tying way faster.

@AboutTrout
@AboutTrout 3 жыл бұрын
Paula , I tie these in 20-14 anywhere from a 2 to 3.3mm bead . I definitely will use these as a heavier fly on a two fly rig . Gulff resin is worth the investment , you won’t go back after trying it . I haven’t stayed too far from this color scheme .

Nice simple pattern. Do you ever tie dry flies?
@AboutTrout
@AboutTrout 3 жыл бұрын
I do! Although , where I fish and guide it’s almost always nymphing . I find it easier just to buy my dries as I only carry a few in small quantities. Where I’m at the dry fly fishing can be very technical and I don’t want to discourage newer anglers . When I used to guide a lot of creeks it was my favorite way to introduce new anglers into the sport .
@martinm1484
@martinm1484 3 жыл бұрын
@@AboutTrout I'd say dry fly fishing is normally quite technical when done right, what are the particular challenges on your river? Dry fly is probably the most rewarding form of fishing, so I agree it's a good way to get new anglers hooked, but of course we are always subject to the conditions on the day. Anyway, let's see your dry fly kung fu in a video!
