Have you ever wondered exactly what an "old cut" diamond is? I've made this video and an optical guide to antique diamond cuts! We'll take a look at the innovations in cutting technology over the past few centuries that made the modern round brilliant cut possible, and we will look at 7 antique and vintage diamond ring examples from my jewelry collection.
This video focuses on the evolution of table, point and rose cut diamonds through old mine, old European and transitional cut diamonds to the modern round brilliant cut we know today.
Thanks for watching, and don't forget about my April 2022 giveaway! For details on how to enter, watch this: • April Jewelry Giveaway...

I love all the info about the different cuts. I have 3 emerald cut diamonds that were my grandmother’s set in a white gold ring side by side length wise. She was born in 1903 and probably acquired them between the 1920s and 1960s but I know nothing else about them. A few years ago I had them put into a new ring setting b/c my fingers have gotten slimmer as I have aged. My jeweler said he could tell they were pretty old because they were not cut as symmetrically as the ones today. It is fascinating to me to learn how diamonds used to be cut. Thanks again Jen. This video leaves me with even more interest in antique diamonds than before.

Ooh, Kelleen your ring sounds like a fabulous, special one - and it's so lovely to have the family connection! Emerald cut diamonds were not 'standardized' until the 1940s, so your jeweler's observations make complete sense. Thank you so much for watching & sharing such a thoughtful comment! 💖😘

Diamonds have been a mystery to me until TODAY!!! I suddenly have a new obsession but will try and temper my urges to go shopping (until payday, at least!) So much keen insights, packed into ten minutes and fifty three seconds; you must have a secret investigative gift Jen! The earlier rings are so enticing, drawing the viewer into that old world of gold and jewels...LOTS OF GOLD! The Rose Cut is my favorite, which would require goldsmithing talent along with jeweler expertise and artistic flair, to create a piece like this one! Just look at the loops, circles as well as the crafted heart cape over the diamond..."delicious," as the Aussies say! I think the gold was a casting, to start with, then drilled to make the flower petals around the diamond mount, ribbons or leaves and, all before the diamond was set...perhaps set from underneath? These are just guesses, am I close? Does the gold form the heart or is the diamond heart cut? I prefer the older ones...maybe 'cause we are both ancient and rough around the edges...great information and insights into this mysterious world of the most sought after stone in history!
@sundaebaubles

I always enjoy your thoughtful comments, ancient investigator! The "heart" ring is indeed a rubbed over collect setting cut back to reveal a heart. This ring was once in a jewelry exhibit that featured "sentimental rings" (hosted by Doyle & Doyle in NYC). It could very well have been cast as this has been done for millennia. What amazes me is how detailed metalsmithing was, even 400+ years ago!!

My mother inherited a white gold ring set with rose cut diamonds from her aunt. She remember her aunt purchasing it in the 60's-70's and the style is similar to the 1930's ring you showed here. We refer to the diamonds as 'chips' because they look just like that. Flat backed and irregularly shaped. It is definitely not clear stones; It is what people term nowadays as salt and pepper diamonds. It doesn't have any of that rainbow fire, but it is have big flashes of light as the wearer moves about. I prefer how the light sparkles on the older cuts.

Great question, absolutely!! They are one of the oldest diamond cuts - and some cutters still creating them today. Rose cut diamonds typically have from 3-24 facets. The older examples are often less symmetrical, and more included. Modern rose cuts are typically quite symmetrical. ♥️✨

Love your explanation of the many different era of diamond cuts ❤️ I have one that has frosted girdle and very thick but in a solitare Tiffany setting. Sparkles from ever single cut and I only see a black hole in middle of diamond looking down. Also a bright yellow color can be seen if held in the light? Need help because the markings have fade except 14k with a large *
@sundaebaubles
@sundaebaubles 10 ай бұрын
Hello Ally! That definitely sounds like an "old cut" - either and old European or mine cut. They tend to "face up" whiter (which means when you look down on the stone as opposed to from the side), so seeing more yellow when held from the side makes sense. the black hole is the "open culet". It sounds absolutely beautiful! Feel free to send me a photo at sundaebaubles@gmail.com if you'd like me to take a look ❤️

Well done. I have an old diamond with a large culet but it doesn’t have a high crown, so I’m not sure what cut it is.
@sundaebaubles
@sundaebaubles 2 жыл бұрын
✨ Ooh, I would love to take a look! The old cuts maximized surface area, so it could be that the crown is simply not as high as others. Another tip to differentiate an OMC and OEC is the side of the table - OECs are sometimes smaller. It could very well be a traditional cut too 💖
@Kim_Vardas53

@@sundaebaubles I’ll send you photos via messenger. Originally the diamond was in a ring that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. There were 3 larger diamonds and some smaller ones. My brother in law got one for his wife’s wedding ring, my husband got one, which he had set for my engagement ring and my MIL had a ring made for herself. I have my MIL’s ring as well. Interesting thing to me is the diamonds are different. The culet on my diamond is larger than the culet on my MIL’s. Her diamond has much more sparkle than mine. My husband had planned on having the 2 diamonds set in a side by side toi & moi setting but there’s too much of a difference in the look of the diamonds. I think mine is probably an old mine cut

"Culet" probably (?) = colette; a solid pressed in circle rather than "prong" setting.
@sundaebaubles
@sundaebaubles Жыл бұрын
Culet & colette refer to different features. Are culet is the very tip on the diamond. - an open culet being one that has been ‘lopped off’ which creates a window when on looks down through the top of the diamond. A collette is indeed a sort of closed bezel-like setting to the sides. Often with crimped edges 💖

My question is the girdle on my moms ring is nearly razor sharp. Where would this style fall in to line with styles shown?
@sundaebaubles
@sundaebaubles 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sue! I would love to see the ring to help determine the cut! Girdle "thickness" is one aspect that can differ widely between diamonds. In addition to checking the girdle's finish (OMCs and OECs are generally unpolished, later cuts are polished and even faceted and engraved with GIA o other information), there is an 'ideal' standard, and when graded they are generally given a rating of extremely thick to extremely thin. A girdle that is "too thin" can create more risk for the diamond to chip, and one that is too thick creates "dead weight" resulting in a smaller looking diamond.
