Having watched many spoon videos… many carvers cannot remember what woods have been used on a lot of the spoons. So I had a thought. Why not make a wood marking? The same as silver or gold have markings. Have a marking for each kind of wood to go along next to the makers mark.

It's so great that you spend time looking at the spoons and talking about the wood and the effects of baking before you get on to the 'how to'' - there is as much education in looking at and understanding the best work as there is in showing the techniques. Now I have to carve enough spoons for my oven.

This is amazing; baking spoons! I love learning (about) new techniques like this. Keen to try it out. You've also answered the question I came here with: Is it feasible to make spoons out of elm? I have piles of it, but have had mixed results when attempting to make larger items like cheese/cutting boards. Often it pretends to be fully seasoned then, after being worked into something nice, warps or splits overnight just to spite me. Seasoned British elm is of course pretty hard and not a lot of fun to carve, but now I know a spoon is possible I will make an attempt. Thanks for posting! 🇬🇧

Thanks Deborah. Just stone burnished a hard dry oak spoon with a quartz ball that I sharpen with too. It can proof the grain as well it seems, as I found a few firm whiskers still standing that I scraped down. What about the scraping stroke? I used to consider it my final move on the finest, but now back and forth between the stone and the scrape is even finer. Peace Out.

I've found that baking wood, at least birch, makes it shrink quite a lot across the grain/fibers. It's been quite noticeable on on things that you've made to be totally circular which gets a slightly oval shape but also on spoons. Something to keep in mind.
