Thank you for providing solid content that’s in step with the video title, right to the point, without the hip hop music and the five minutes of bullshit like “oh look at me mow my lawn” or “here’s my dog, she just got her shots.” So refreshing from a truck channel.

the auto trans is usually bad, and suspension parts usually wear out like ball joints, 04' owner here, with proper maintenance i love the truck
@AsianNIGMA4 жыл бұрын
Dark Wing Duck the auto trans on the 5.9 is terrible, that 4 speed will grenade before 100k, but with the 6.7 came the 6 speed and a dramatically better auto
@ianberry58794 жыл бұрын
@@AsianNIGMA that's not a very accurate assessment. Many stock 47s and 48s can and have gone over 300k with no issues, if the truck was driven sanely and not hopped up or jacked up on huge tires with highway gears in the axles. The stock 47RE in my 97 blew the torque converter while towing a 20k lb hay trailer out of a field, at 203k miles, turning 33 inch tires with 3.54 gears. The 6 speed 68RFE in the 6.7 trucks, and the Aisin which came shortly afterwards, are similar in that they will last a good while if they aren't abused or overheated. If you run a hot tune on a 6.7 and hammer on it all the time it will smoke a 68 in short order, and when it comes to building the transmissions, the 48 can be built to hold a LOT more power than a 68.

You mentioned it at the end, but only briefly. The biggest negative cosmetically is the dash that falls apart. I actually lost tools in mine. Luckily, there is aftermarket support for new dash pads, but it is still a big ugly. (2003 5.9 HO, NV5600 6 speed, 3500 quad cab Laramie)

Outpost: Great information. I have a 305/555 '03. She carries our slide in truck camper with ease. I put on an AirDog on her right away when I bought in 2006. Truck had 35,000 km ( 21,000 miles) at the time. May I suggest to others to have a spare #4 fuel injection tube (hard line) as this is also an area where you will have problems. I carry all 6 lines with me just in case on starts spewing fuel due to a crack. One other item to carry is the unit bearings for the front wheels. My truck is 2wd and sometimes when these unit bearings fail you may not be able to simply buy one at your local parts store. I carry two SKF brand units with me as well. I had to order as my dealer had none. I bought through Amazon and saved a ton. My truck just turned 85,000 km ( 53,000 miles) so hopefully she will outlast me. Thanks again

I say it really depends on your needs, too. If you really need long distance hauling, utility, and capability then go ahead and get one of these. But, if you're just toting around the street, in town or on a highway, then you can just get by with a car or crossover.

I may be getting one soon, going to look at the truck this weekend. I've been itching to own a Cummins for a long time but wasn't wanting to spend a fortune. Plus most of the ones in my price range have 200-300,000 original miles on them BUT I fell into a deal that I can't pass up. I've known a fella that's got an 04 Common Rail. He mentioned selling it to me when we were talking about trucks recently. I think I may pull the trigger. The truck chassis and body have 216,000 miles BUT it's got a full overhaul on the engine and tranny. I guess it had engine problems when he bought it and shortly after he started daily driving it, cylinder 1 and 6 overheated from the previous owner running a hot tune while towing heavy. So, the engine was completely disassembled, bored, blue printed, decked, studded, mahle forged pistons, the whole 9 yards. And while that was out, they overhauled the transmission and put a southbend clutch in it (nv5600 6 speed). To my knowledge the fuel system is still original but I didn't let that worry me too much since I plan to do a few industrial injection and air dog upgrades anyways. Great video, very informative. I will be new to the Cummins world although I’ve always wanted to own a truck with one.

Will be doing another update video soon to go over the list of things I’ve done, as well as driving impressions from the 1.25 quart overfill on the transmission I recently did and the Mishimoto aluminum radiator install I’m doing this weekend. Make sure you go through all of the heater functions ie floor defrost ect. The blend doors are notorious for breaking and it is an expensive fix the whole dash has to be removed. The FCM is all so very common going out which kills the low beam headlight on one of the front lights.

A few years ago I bought an 06 2500 mega and absolutely love it. When I bought the truck the steering was a tad loose. After a few months the steering wander was dangerous. No death wobble but had to seriously upgrade the steering components. I've been looking around for a cummins lately. I love the 6.7 for the towing capability but really sketchy on all the emissions stuff that makes it unreliable and very thirsty, especially when it's purging the DPF. I heard fuel economy can drop down to half the nirmal. How good are the 5.9's at towing in comparison and what kind of real world MPG can I expect, loaded and empty?
@AsianNIGMA4 жыл бұрын
Sergey Pupko the emissions isn’t that bad people complain so they can have a excuse to blast coal everywhere and sound loud , the best 6.7 are 2007.5-12 after that the DEF took it too far, however if you do get a 5.9 don’t get a auto unless you wanna rebuild the transmission a lot those 4 speeds are trash

I don't know anything about diesel engines but when someone says that it only has 200k miles is that low for diesel trucks?
@Tracescript5 жыл бұрын
Leo Taliente I mean it’s still high mileage for a truck. But for these trucks they can run a million miles easily. You just have to think about what the previous owner(s) did with the truck between driving it off the lot and then reselling it. You don’t want to buy into a truck that has been ragged out by its previous owner(s) as compared to someone who did their maintenance on schedule and took care of it even at 200,000 miles. Do your research and look over the truck extensively. Bring a mechanic buddy with you for a second opinion. Same goes with any vehicle to be honest.
@kylekoplien41255 жыл бұрын
The Cummins engine will last far longer than 200k miles if taken care of, but you have to remember that the rest of the truck, ball joints, axles, driveline, transmission etc also has 200k miles on them, so just follow this video of stuff to check for

In short yes for a diesel truck 200k is considered low mileage

Jesus Christ she's beautiful. I drive the same truck but in the 5.7 hemi gas.. a 2004. Its prone to a slew of problems like most vehicles. One of the biggest problems this truck has is that its too sexy for a work truck and I'm always frowning at any little ding in the paint

Found a perfect condition 2003 3500 cclb 2wd auto cummins for $13,000 miles only 130,000 miles High output. Good deal?

That's the same truck I own. Good deal? Yes. I have been quoted $18,000 for my truck.
@connerbutler10775 жыл бұрын
Doug Moody it's a single rear wheel 3500! My only concern is the 48rfe transmission really wanted a 6 speed manual. It being 2wd doesn't concern me as they are always a lot cleaner and lesser miles than 4wd ones for a cheaper price.
@moodberry5 жыл бұрын
@@connerbutler1077 That tranny can be fine, depending on what you want to tow. And, they can always be built up. Actually, that's what I have planned for mine, because I intend to tow more than the rated load. But as long as you stay within specs, you will be fine.
@connerbutler10775 жыл бұрын
Doug Moody I don't really ever tow if I do it's a jet ski or a landscaping trailer. I mainly will be using the bed of the truck for gravel, stone, soil, logs, and mulch. So I haul over 4000 pounds in the bed regularly.

Great video one question I have about the same amount of blow by as you very little but my breather tube coming off the valve cover hazes quite a bit wonder if your does as well or if its my aftermarket oil bypass kit is causing some vapor sense it dumps the clean oil on the rockers 06 ram 3500
@OutpostCTD5 жыл бұрын
Hmm. I will have to look at mine. Are you looking at it when it is a cold engine? The truck may haze more when cold because there could be some water vapor steaming which could be normal. I think if there's no pressure trying to blow the oil cap off; that would be a good sign.

How many miles is the 5.9 good for? Are they worth buying at 180-205,000mi??
@OutpostCTD3 жыл бұрын
Average life is 350k according to Cummins. I’d say if maintained well average life will be greater yet. Truck in this video has 400k on it now. 180k is a good mileage to buy if you’re on a budget. I bought a 09 model with 238k on it with no hesitation about the miles.
@shanewilson22703 жыл бұрын
@@OutpostCTD I'm certainly on a budget. All the 04-06 i see on the web seem to be over priced in accordance to what kbb says. If kbb is telling me the truck is work maybe 13k for fair price with 200k miles on it. Everyone and their sister trying to get get 16k for them. I haven't seen many "fair deals" with the current intel I have.
@OutpostCTD3 жыл бұрын
@@shanewilson2270 yeah 16k is too high considering I bought my 03 with 170k miles back in 2014 for 16k (ask price was 17k). I’d say for that year and mileage 12k may be more of a fair deal to come away with.
@shanewilson22703 жыл бұрын
@@OutpostCTD I just looked up an 05 on kbb. Slt, cummins, auto trans, premium wheels, 190,000mi. Fair market range is 11,877-15,944. And fair price is 13,900. So idk. All the ones I've seen online are way past that with same or more miles. Have to keep looking i guess.

theres a 2003 dodge 3500 SRW with cummins in it for sale for $7900. 133k miles. only thing is the ad says is when the trans is cold its "sluggish" and when it warms up its fine. what' do you think?? please help. also ad says AC doesn't work and hasn't since he owned the truck
@OutpostCTD6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. This is a pretty good price on such a low mileage truck despite the trans issue. If you live in a very cold climate it can be normal for more sluggishness when cold. My truck is this way. The trans will behave differently in cold (under 60F). You will only have 3 gears until you reach 60F trans temp and it will generally like to stay in a lower gear a little longer than usual, but it shouldn't be a huge difference versus being warm. If it is prohibitively slow when cold that may indicate a different issue which I'm not sure what that could be.
@Stonks936 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the reply.. Well it doesn't get very cold here in Hawaii. Haha. I'm hoping to go check the truck out. They said they've put $2500 into the truck recently. ball joints, tires, brakes.

I thought the Duramax from Japan would rule the diesel truck market after all their gas engines are the best hands down compared to American junk gas pots. A v8 diesel never was proven to be worth the weight
