Personally, I like to see Dexters with horns. They really do look so much more stately. However, it does come at a cost. Horns can be dangerious. They could hurt you without any intention by the cow. An injury might change your view of Dexters and you could lose something that you really love. I have polled for all except one which I bought as a non-pedigree just to see how I got on with horns. I am viewing it as a possible mistake and maybe she will go on an early for sale list.

I rather keep it natural … keep the horns . The have covers for them if aggressive. But you need to cull the mean ones .

I'm looking to just have one Bull, one cow and breed them to raise beef for the homestead each year or so, the breeding pair would have 3.5 acres to roam with a pond and a few trees. plenty of shade and a small barn to house hay for the cool Florida winters. I was thinking Polled instead of horned. What is the average price for a Polled Bull and a cow?

Sounds like a good plan. I would expect to pay between 1500-2000 for the cow, and 1500-2500 for the bull depending on the breeder, and his gene set, and age. You can find Dexter cattle for cheaper than this and sometimes you run across a good deal, but from a reputable breeder that is confident in what they are selling this is what you should be expecting. Just remember that if it sounds to good to be true there is probably a reason.

Do you see any issue with mixing dexter's and full size? (Non-bulls)

Hi Michael. People do use the Dexter Bulls to breed full size first time heifers so they will have the calf easier. So yes going in that one direction is fine. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
