This video gives a step by step guide on how to complete an Insulation Resistance test. It also shows you were to put your results on the Schedule of Test Results and what pages to look at in your On Site Guide

Amendment Two requires for initial verification first fix we test at 500v second fix when accessory’s are installed and for periodic inspection we test at 250v and sensitive equipment can not be removed we tested line and neutral combined and test to earth . Also A 500v ir test will not damage electronic devices but you will get doggie readings. I have test the ring main in my house at 500vDC with the TV plugs in on on and the digital twenty four hour timer switch for my fish tank LED light plugged in and guess what they still work perfectly fine

Probably the best video on KZfaq on this test with the use of onsite guide. My recommendation would be if you can, redo the video again with better quality. Other than that you have gained a subscriber.

first of all thank you for your presentation. secondly as it says in on-site guid to remove RCD, I wonder why you turned on RCD while you were doing insulation resistance test ?

Yes you remove all sensitive devices and also if you had a fault within a circuit you only did live to earth not live to neutral, good presentation but more detail needed

Sir ek problem ye hai ki mere ghar ki electric bill bahut jada aara hai fir mai ne complaint kiya tho electric board wale bolte hai shyd aapki earthing problem hai ya aapke ghar ki wiring problem hai iske wajeh se aapki ghar ki electricity bill aa rahi hai ya aapke ghar ki freeze me problem hai ya aap ghr ki wiring cheak karo ya earthing proper karlo mai ne earthing cheak ki sahi hai bulb se cheak phase aur earthing acche se glow ho rahi hai abh wiring me kya cheak karna hai o batao sir aur proper earthing na hone se electric bill jada aati hai kya 400 unit aati hai har mahine plz help

Please improve the quality of your videos, two the supply voltage in the UK is 240v AC , we only use 230v for our calculations . Otherwise a good demonstration and explanation.

Hello! That was really great. You explained things very well. You know when you did the test for ALL the circuits at once ? You mentioned you switched off the power and put the cable from the "load" end and the other cable to the earth/ Neutral. I was told by my teacher that an OVR can be damaged if you do this. Or does it mean you can do what you did as long as there is no digital OVR? Sorry for stupid question!!!

Your teacher is indeed correct. Some voltage sensitive devices such as an OVR and even some RCBOs can be damaged having 500V put through them. You are also correct, if your installation is a simple one, with no voltage sensitive equipment, like my small test board in the video, then it is fine to test the entire board this way. Look in Chapter 10 of your OSG and it gives pictures on performing this test

Why do some people say RCD's should be off? Same for SPD's as they could be damaged with 500v IR test?

Because RCD's are deemed voltage sensitive equipment so care must be taken. They need checking as to whether they will be damaged. Check the manufacturers data sheets, or, they should be disconnected so they are not included in the 500V insulation resistance test. Page 68 in Guidance Notes 3 details this

Amendment 2 tells you to complete test at 500V. Only test at 250V on 230V installation if the 500V test would damage equipment that you are unable to remove prior to the test

For initial verification it is always 500 V regardless of inconvenience.

​​@@Dog-whisperer7494 hi there, I'm trying to figure out how to improve the quality when I show the OSG. I'll do better on my next set of videos. Not that I want to disagree with you good sir, but nominal voltage dropped to 230V in 1995. Allowing for national grid to supply us with voltages as low as 216V with their -6% tolerance. And thank you for your support and appreciation. I will do better for you next time

@@ElectricalStudentsUK yes but they didn’t physically drop the voltage, they couldn’t do it as lower voltage would result in more usage and that would put a massive strain on the grid. What they did was lower the calculation voltage from 240 to 230 and that allowed the +-tolerance ie the supply voltage can be +-6% giving us a voltage as low as 218 v and as high as 258v it was all to do with unification with the rest of Europe . As I said we only use 230 instead 240 for our calculations . Put a voltmeter on the incoming side of your main switch and I bet you get 238-242/3 volts. I was being tort about back in the late eighties when I did my electrical course at college. Unification was also the reason we changed from Red and Black to Brown and Blue black for mains cables single phase, and from Red yellow blue to Brown black grey and blue for three phase.
