We are a culture obsessed with happiness, except we’ve been going about it all wrong. Before I became a doctor, I actually studied Buddhism. I wanted to understand the root of human suffering, and through that, understand the way to create happiness.
On today’s episode, I’m excited to talk to Dan Harris about the science of happiness, how to deal with the challenges of modern-day life, and how to create more happiness for ourselves and for those around us.
Dan Harris is an author, podcaster, and entrepreneur. For 21 years, he worked as an anchor and correspondent for ABC News, hosting such shows as Nightline and the weekend editions of Good Morning America. Dan has reported from all over the planet, covering wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and producing investigative reports in Haiti, Cambodia, and the Amazon. After having a nationally televised panic attack on Good Morning America, Dan discovered meditation and then wrote the best-selling book 10% Happier as a way to encourage fellow skeptics to give the practice a shot. After that first book, Dan launched the Ten Percent Happier app, wrote a second book, and started the Ten Percent Happier podcast, where he interviews celebrities, entrepreneurs, authors, scientists, and meditation teachers about how to do life better.
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Mitopure, Nordic Naturals, and Apollo.

TLDR, breathing pattern, to get you brain to change waves, essentially : - Happiness is a skill that can be practiced through meditation. - Meditation can lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and rewire key parts of the brain associated with stress and self-awareness. - The most effective lever to pull for health and happiness is the quality of your relationships. - Meditation helps develop mindfulness, which allows you to see your thoughts and impulses without being controlled by them. - Meditation improves focus and counteracts the negative effects of technology and social media. - Self-compassion is a key aspect of meditation, allowing you to be kind to yourself and break the cycle of self-criticism. - Compassion, combined with the desire to help, can lead to deep happiness and a better relationship with oneself and others. - Meditation and compassionate practices are accessible and do not require a significant financial investment. - The Dalai Lama exemplifies the power of compassion and altruism, which allows him to find happiness amidst suffering and to connect deeply with others. List the specific actions related to achieving happiness. - Incorporate short daily meditation practices into your routine. - Prioritize the quality of your relationships and invest time and effort into strengthening them. - Cultivate mindfulness to become aware of your thoughts and impulses without being controlled by them. - Practice self-compassion by speaking to yourself with kindness and support. - Develop a sense of compassion for others by empathizing with their suffering and desiring to help. - Engage in acts of service and altruism to create a sense of fulfillment and connection. - Seek opportunities to contribute to the well-being of others, whether through volunteering, supporting a cause, or simply being kind and caring. - Embrace impermanence and let go of attachments to outcomes, understanding that everything is constantly changing. - Focus on the present moment and appreciate the beauty and wonder of existence. - Strive to maintain a positive and open-hearted mindset, even in the face of difficulties and challenges. - Embrace self-care practices that prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. - Continuously learn and grow through self-reflection, personal development, and seeking understanding of the human mind and condition. - Surround yourself with positive influences and environments that support your happiness and well-being. - Approach life with a sense of curiosity, humor, and a willingness to embrace the ups and downs. - Practice gratitude and appreciation for the blessings in your life. - Find meaning and purpose in your actions and align your life with your core values and passions.

THANK YOU, Dr. Hymen, for the cultural context around the Dalai Lama’s offhand comment. Something always felt wrong, “off”, about the prurient interpretation of it. And amplified by Chinese media? Uh huh. It all makes sense now.

Happiness is a decision, not a happening. As long as anyone thinks that it's experience is a result of an external event, then your happiness is will always be evasive. Peace that passes all understanding is available to those who seek the One True Way. Best of luck to everyone on their journey, your eternity counts on it. Truth isn't relative :)

Mark Hyman you need to decrease the bass in your vocal mix, add more mid frequencies . The clarity isn't the best. Try a pro sound guy to find the issue. It could be your microphone type. It could be the room aswell.Regards Steve

@@marta, yes, I’m Christian, but I’ve always recognized that the Dalai Lama seems to be a very good and kind person. I remember posting under a video about that incident that people are too quick to judge and there must be some sort of explanation for what he did, and of course, people just attacked me for wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt. We are a Gladiator society. People seem to love seeing another’s downfall and are so quick to join the group lynching. I was really happy to hear this explanation as well. It’s my hope that the Dalai Lama will find Jesus before he passes. 🙏🏻

Buddhism and psychedelics good. Evolution and big bangs are assumed true as if the mountain of evidence, yes, scientific evidence, to the contrary doesn't exist. when you start with wrong assumptions, u arrive at wrong conclusions. ok, and so what is wrong with "Love your neighbor as yourself"? no no nono. Christianity couldn't possibly have the answer to everything Buddhism does only more and better. keep spinning your wheels.
