Ustad Ali Akbar Khan
Raga Bageshri Kanada (Alap, Jor)
This was a free, live, Zoom class taught through our Ali Akbar College of Music. I started these during the pandemic to help create more community spaces for lover of the music, and students. This one had more questions during the session (shout out Arnab bhai), so it dives a bit deeper into particular examples of ornaments and notes. This concert creates such a mood, and I posted the link just below this in case you want to hear the full uninterrupted recording. So beautiful!

Such a great idea to present ragas in this way , exposing all the tiny little details that give them their unique, personal character. Thank you.

That was part of the hope, so I’m glad it came across this way to you too. This was very much the kind of thing I wanted to be able to explore when I was younger. The goal was to help others practice the tools for their own listening for whatever recordings they’re going through - tips, techniques, pitfalls/traps, etc. I really appreciate the support 🙏🏼

@@_manikkhan Your father was such a genius, he could tell the whole story with his very first note keeping the listener mesmerized till the end. He had a quality and depth to his music that is very rare to find these days.

You the best, Chris! Thanks so much, brother. I am definitely looking at how to format these in different ways. These ones are all from these live, zoom sessions for our school over the last few years. However, there are so many ways to go about it. I really appreciate the feedback!

Hey Manu, I love these break downs. Ustd. Ali Akbar Khan is my hero! I really believe all his notes during an alap are so complete and suitable to the raga which he played. I always listen to his version of a raga as the blueprint. I love all his recordings of raga Sindhi Bhairavi! Thank you for these videos!

My ji, Rish. Love it! My dad is my hero too, so cheers to that, haha. His Sindhu Bhairavi recordings are pretty vast. I have been looking to explore that relationship of Shuddh Bhairavi vs Sindhu/Sindhi Bhairavi through my dad. However, his feelings on when/where he'd perform the ragas shifted over time. I have not found his Shuddh Bhairavi on KZfaq. I do not know if it's even on here. Will keep looking. I so appreciate this. You're most welcome!

Ahh, absolutely. Two recordings popped in my head almost instantly. If we're talking my dad: Chandranandan (this is potentially my 'you could only listen to one recording for the rest of your life' pick.) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lamki7KD2dzaiYE.html - If you're not familiar with this one, I highly recommend listening to it late night and/or the full moon for the full effect. Durgeshwari (unfortunately, this one I could not find on KZfaq) www.ammp.com/ali-akbar-khan-signature-evening-ragas-live-in-san-francisco - It's with Zakir ji in San Francisco back in the late 70's. First half is Pahari Jhinjhoti (alap), and the second half is in Durgeshwari. The latter was one that resonated a lot with me, and helped form the idea of how vast lines can be. Every single time I put it on I just am blown away by the mood my dad creates, and how much of a musical 'journey' it feels like. Every time he finishes his sections and comes back to the gat, I feel like I lose the concept of time, haha. Super special place in my heart!
