Guided Reading with ESL Elementary Students

: Small group instruction and guided reading are critical components of the reading block. Guided reading, as defined by Fountas and Pinnell, is a teaching approach designed to help individual students learn how to process a variety of increasingly challenging texts with understanding and fluency. Small groups are made up of students with similar instructional reading levels and learning needs. Through guided reading, students learn how to develop and use strategies to construct meaning from text. Teachers pull small groups for guided reading while other students are engaged in Daily 5 activities or other valuable literacy work. Small group guided reading lessons should be carefully planned in advance of the lesson. In this video, the teacher will work with a small group of ESL first grade students.

Blending sounds and Making Words without context or pictures is not very meaningful for students learning English. In fact, to them it might be an exercise in gibberish. A lot of time is spent doing this and the teacher is very fortunate to have well-behaved students willing to be led in a rather boring and non-concrete exercise.

This technique of repeating sounds and words may not contribute much to comprehension but it does improve pronunciation (phonemic inventory) and increases self-confidence in students about speaking, reading out loud and focusing on meaning when speaking vs. how they sound or whether they are making mistakes.
