This film is woefully underrated. I'm glad someone else out there managed to appreciate it.

One of my favourite memories with my sister is watching that ending scene. For the most part we enjoyed the film, and then the ending was just great. We were laughing the whole time and it's one of the best memories with my sister

I honestly have NO idea why this film bombed. It is a fun, exciting and genuinely funny action adventure. For me, it totally surpassed the Pirates films. The action set pieces are actually coherent as opposed to the VERY CG-heavy Pirates sequences that often got confusing to follow. As mentioned by Rossatron in this video, the 'geography' of for example, the trains, is easy to understand, thereby making the crazy action somewhat believable within the context of the narrative style. Of course, Depp steals the show as Tonto and I liked the Buster Keaton style antics here and there. Great soundtrack score by Hans Zimmer and when that William Tell Overture finally kicks in for the action finale, I was smiling when I first saw it at the cinema. If you haven't seen this yet, check it out - you will be surprised.

Just saw this movie for the first time this weekend and it blew me away. Don't know which big ass flaws the "critics" made out/up, but to me it was utterly entertaining, combining fierce and complex antagonists with hilarious chemistry between the charismatic leads (Armie - hugely underrated - Hammer!), showing grim violence and high stakes yet escalating always through fun and well made action. It also effortless portrays the great injustice to the natives - especially if seen through the innocent eyes of the coming to be Lone Ranger - so even an underage audience can get a feeling for the horrors that happened in that conflict without ever being too offensive or repulsive either. And the grand-finale... well see the video for that one ;)

I don’t care what anyone says I loved seeing this movie in theaters and am happy I own the Blu-ray of it. Plus that climax was spectacular to see and hear!! Also I really enjoy the Fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film On Stranger Tides! It was funny, had some cool action, a great climax, the Spainard was an awesome supporting character reminded my of Boba Fett not in the film a lot, but when he was there was so suave and cool!! To name a few of many things!!!!

Although I saw the film when it came out, despite its flaws I still liked it and couldn't understand why it was so bashed not only by critics but by all medias. Learning about the last 20 mins of the film has made me appreciate the movie alot more

I liked the dark elements of the film, the villain eating the heart of a character, man slaughter, great Indian war and so on that when I saw how PG-13 the ending was, I hated it. Yet, it's very well shot artistically.

It's a fucking masterpiece, Hilarious and action packed. People just see the budget and think it's an overblown bloated mess or that's it's just Pirates of the Wild West. But I bet they're the same people that sat through 3 awful Pirates sequels. I think another reason it failed was that no-one who isn't wearing incontinence pads knows what The Lone Ranger is. I barely remember the black and white show being shown on Channel 4 in the 90's. I'm 30 and all I remember from it was a bit where someone says "The masked bandit!" before being corrected.

Just watched it. Love the action throughout. It never gets choppy, and is consistantly humorous. Also: the horse is godamn helarious.

Really good analysis and video overall! Would you consider doing one about Speed Racer. This reminded it to me. I feel that just with this one, it has one of the best (action) climax in cinema in the last decade, if not more. And pretty much the whole movie was a great experiment on editing, camera movements and CGI where it also doesn't matter how "chaotic" it may seem, you still understand what's going on.

I really like this movie. Making a blockbuster action comedy also a critique of the myth of manifest destiny was a very brave artistic call. Probably a step too far but I respect the intent. Plus its lots of fun.

Yes, Tonto is definitely the Captain Jack Sparrow of the Plains. That's exactly why Johnny Depp was cast as him. Gore Verbinski is definitely a master of spectacle. The Lone Ranger would have been better-received had it been a Weird Western like Rango. Instead, it reimagines the series as a Revisionist Western.

I actually like this film....a lot of people says so many bad things that when I finally saw it.....I really like it, I was expecting a pile of shit, instead I get and beautifully well done entertain and fun action film, yes is not perfect, but I didn't ever were bore, it have flaws but still manage to tell the story very well, and after seen this video, I have no doubts of why, great work.

The people behind this movie put themselves in a no win situation. They wanted to give the audience a popcorn crunching extravaganza. A nod to the westerns of the 40’s and 50’s when the guys in the white hats beat the guys in the black hats but they were afraid the movie going audiences of today would sneer at such optimism in an “adult” movie. So they went dark! And this is what they got. A movie that isn’t sure of its tone. It’s as if the director wished they could give us the tone and feel of the last half hour of this movie the whole way thru but were worried about critical movie going audiences not taking the film seriously. Very strange. Reminds of the DC Comics universe. So concerned about being dark and “realistic”. I think audiences are smart enough to realize they’re going to see a movie about the Lone Ranger, not Mean Streets and will check their expectations at the door. It comes down to not trusting your audience.

What ruins the scene for me, and what ruined the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels and the last 2 Fast and Furious movies, is just how overblown and unbelievable the action is. The heroes' actions are timed so perfectly at all times, their abilities change depending on what the current set-piece requires and their reactions to extreme danger or pain are so muted and casual that it destroys the stakes and feels like they're not even there. It would be easy to just blame it on too much CGI, but that only creates an opportunity for these issues. The action choreography and ignorance of believable effects on the characters are the real problem. So while it is a well edited sequence, I can only appreciate it on that technical level, because the emotional stakes only keep getting lower with each "epic" moment and by the time Tonto drops from 20m on a pile of silver nuggets and looks like he just landed on a comfy mattress, I just don't care anymore.

The problem with the Lone Ranger is that it's the polar opposite of Pirates of the Caribbean. Instead of a dark story about a free-spirited antihero sailing the open seas, you have a bright story about a Texas ranger enforcing the law in the desert. (The same law Captain Jack Sparrow would have held in open contempt.) Watching this film, I got the feeling that Gore Verbinski had total antipathy toward the Lone Ranger as a character and a concept -- even to a point of literally dragging the character through manure. The lesson of the Lone Ranger is that directors are more than just talent. They're human beings with their own politics, social views, religious views, and personal preferences. I think even lesser directors like Stephen Sommers or Roland Emmerich would have likely turned out a better movie. I couldn't imagine them *hating* the subject matter as much as Gore Verbinski seemed to have.

Lone Ranger was a shit movie until it hit the big Train Sequence at the end. I remember saying "Jesus, FINALLY" when the William Tell Overture started up and the movie actually became the Lone Ranger movie I've always wanted.

I didn't watch it because of the bad reviews, but in the end it really is the western version of Pirates of the Caribbean. I've wanted to see that since I watched Pirates.

Watching this I remember the final train scene of The Legend of Zorro.

I felt exactly the same way, the finale should have been the general tone of the whole movie. A pity, because i didn't dislike the message of this film either I don't know if it's a matter of budget or what, but watching that explosive climactic chasing scene i regretted even more the whole movie wasn't like that. To me anyways the movie that cemented my fandom towards Verbinsky was Rango, because Pirates was a cool story with... Well, Pirates, it was a win-win situation, Rango instead had everything to prove, and it didn't let me down

First off I like your videos and have enjoyed many of your takes especially the one on Predator. It still holds up as a favorite of mine. Being well shot does help where the actions is easy to follow. But all of that is useless if the suspension of disbelief is broken. And from what I can see, it immediately ruins the action by having a horse run on the top of and in train cars. Not only is this impossible as the hooves or shoes of the horse would have caused it to lose it's footing or that the inside of train cars aren't going to accommodate a mounted person by any measure. Doorways are tight and only about the height of a person, so a mounted person? It works in animated films as more suspension of disbelief is passable with animation, but in live action it becomes really difficult to let go of what you know of how things work in the real world.

Interesting video. There is also a scene breakdown here on KZfaq regarding how the music perfectly accompanies the train chase which is also very interesting and makes me appreciate the scene a little more, too. But the movie as a whole, however, was pretty disappointing. For instance the bookends containing "old" Tonto and the boy were completely unnecessary, sapped the momentum of the film and youthfulness of the character, and only added to an already lengthy running time. Also, the plot was overly complex with just TOO many bad guys (reminded me of how Joel Schumacher ruined his own Batman franchise by adding in villain upon villain in each movie until the final sequel became a chaotic mess). And the triangle love story between the Lone Ranger and his brothers wife? Yuck. Much was made about the practical effects and huge sets, too, but honestly the muted cinematography just made everything look like CGI. I did like Tonto, and of course the musical score, so the film wasn't all bad. But all in all it was very apparent that hubris and ego and former successes and too much money all conspired to ruin what should have been a fast-moving, family-friendly, and truly great movie for the ages.

The bit with the Gattling gun drove me nuts... Why would the guy keep cranking the handle for like a full minute after the Lone Ranger lassoed it and pulled it off target? Overall I enjoyed the movie, though, I think it gets a bit too much hate...

Nice look at The Lone Ranger +Rossatron - I watched teh film on DVD - And while far from great, It DID suffer from far too much Johnny Depp, I actually enjoyed it... I think its biggest issue was that the Horse became the biggest star... It was HILARIOUS! I do think that had a little more care been taken and Disney had NOT relied on Johnny Depp to be the main draw... (It should have been called the Story of Tonto Starring Johnny Depp and featuring the Lone Ranger!), it could actual;y have worked! Muddled yes, Dumb, Of Course, but a Bad Movie? Actually - NO! Its kind of fun and goofy...

That green/gray cold color filter that was used on this film makes no sense with the light hearted material, set in a hot desert western environment. It should have been colorful and warm colored. Silly

I loved this movie, myself. I wish it was more well-received but I think it managed to dodge a bullet by flopping; the franchise would have been ruined by modern Hollywood if it had done well.

From a conceptual level this film was a disaster, but the action and the set pieces were incredible.

I enjoy the film but the music score for that last action sequence did take me out of it.

One great action sequence does not forgive 2 hours of failed storytelling. the reason i was bored in this scene was i didnt care about any of the characters.

It's not a bad film, it's just far, far too long. Imagine this wonderful finale caps a tighter film; imagine this scene signs off a 100 minute lead-up, making the total run time less than two hours.

I loved the cinematography and the action in this movie too. But the script was very poorly done, I'm actually surprised it was ever green lit with that terrible story. I wish they would have made more like POTC. It's not often we get big budget westerns. I for one am tired of seeing all the money spent on super heroes.

Honestly the biggest problem the Lone Ranger has....which is the same the Pirates of the Caribbean sequeals have, is it's too long and bloated when it didn't need to be, and I have a soft spot for the Lone Ranger but had the script be tighter and at 2 hours tops, I don't think it would have gotten panned the way it did

Haven't seen the movie, but looks interesting. Just... you know, as a point, if you compare anything to hot garbage, it looks good. Transformers is not exactly what you'd call a stellar movie =p But hey, it's on Netflix (The Lone Ranger I mean), gonna give it a watch now!

Part of the backlash or the reason this didn't get the audience it needed and I agree is that that the film was whitewashed. Johnny Depp is a great actor but casting him as a Native American is hard to swallow and screws the entire movie for me.

I think the reason this movie did as poorly as it did was because we had just gotten through 4 Pirates of the Caribbean movies and everyone took one look at this and thought "Oh, great, Pirates in the Old West..."

It's just too bad all this wasn't done in a film that understood and respected the characters. You should do a video on deconstruction, the Hollywood goto choice when dealing with nostalgia; how to do it correctly, and how it is often done incorrectly by people who either didn't understand the source material, or obviously had a disdain for it.

Love your videos but I couldn't disagree with you more! As I love Verbinski, this movie was terrible. Although, beautifully shot, nothing about this movie worked. It deserves ever bit of negativity it got. And putting the Lone Ranger theme on repeat for the last 'action' scene was not only annoying but lazy as a film

Wow, some people are very easily impressed. This movie and the mentioned scene was utter garbage.

I remember watching this scene, and wishing I could love it, but the fatigue after the crapfest this movie was until this scene, the boring characters and the really bad acting (Hammer and Depp) I just wanted the movie to end. If I had the movie on bluray I could see myself popping it on every once in a while and just watch that scene.

Horses on train carriages and Tonto jumping from bridges? It's silly and doesn't work for me.

Just wanna say I enjoy your vides very much but I don't agree with this one. So lets have a nice debate about it! What kills Verbinski for me is that his set pieces are huge but the action is small. This and the end fight in Worlds End are big, flashy and loud but the action is small. A lot of stuff is happening but it's all unintresting because I don't care about the characters. A lot of noise is happening around out heroes but thats all there is noise. I never think they are in danger and even if I did I don't care because he didn't get the characters right. Contrast that to the end fight in Black Pearl, the set piece is small (a cave and onborad a ship if I'm remembering correctly) but the action is HUGE! We have great characters with great motivations in a great environment with great music and great stunt work. Don't need the big, flashy spectacle of a fucking waterwheel tumbling down an island (even tho that was kinda cool) to get my blood pumping. Everthing is already there to get me invested. The focus is on the characters not the big flashy thing. Verbinski (or Bruckheimer since he was a producer on both films) always thinks bigger is better, when as we all know most often it's not He is not alone in thinking this, we all know a lot of producers and directors thinks this is the way to go. Big spectacle with noathing in them.. But verbinski started a trend and in a way he created the modern summer blockbuster. What we like about the movie is it's characters not the aforementioned waterwheel (although again it's kinda cool) and when they do have action scenes we care about them. Sorry if this was a rambling mess but english is my second language and trying to make a point when you translate everything in your head isn't always easy. Have it cool and take care! Side note: I always thougt that the gag with Elizabeth and the other two pirates running from Davy Jones crew in Dead Mans Chest was underused. The ide of three people defanding themselfs sharing only two swrods and fighting a group is a great and funny gag that you can expand immensely.

I'm sorry, but this is the first video of yours where I was hoping there was a fake out of some sort in the title. I HATED every second of this movie, and would have walked out, but it was 100 degrees outside the theatre that day, and I was enjoying the AC. It was complete and utter crap from beginning to end, and I thought that it was a career killer for all involved. Loud, boring, nonsensical, insulting, and a total waste of time. I knew I would NEVER sit through it again voluntarily, unless my other choice was water boarding. A well-crafted turd is a turd, nonetheless.
