I remember playing this game with my father years back when I'd visit him in his home on Christmas break or summer break. We'd do dungeons, or just roam around the world. My father was the one who introduced me into playing this game, and I loved playing with him, on my Assassin, and him, his Monk, or Mesmer. My father passed a few years ago, and I sure miss him. But that is what makes listening to this soundtrack all the more better.

No, that's not his name, though I don't feel comfortable giving out his real name. What I will say is: he belonged to a guild called [Mara] Mature. Age. Recruitment. Alliance. It was a guild only for 18 year olds and up, so of course I could not join since I started playing this game when I was very young. The guild was dying as everyone started moving to Gw2, and even offered to make him guild leader. I went to Gw2, though he did not. He never was interested in Gw2, and thus never touched it. I stopped playing both games, so I have no idea what happened to his guild.

Hey, I was a member of MARA from the very early days, when we were BFLP. (Bald, Fat, Lazy and Proud.) It was a great bunch of players. I'm very sorry to hear about your father. I hope hearing the soundtrack brings back as many good memories for you as it does for me.

I started Prophecies with 2 of my best friends in 2005. Back then this was our favorite game. We played everything in PVE Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall. But that wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to get into PVP after i saw the GVG World Finals at the Games Convention in Leipzig. Idiot Savants [iQ] vs. War Machine [WM], which WM won. I played some GvG’s and made my deer with Healingball/Iway and Vim. Unfortunately both of my friends stopped pretty soon after that (even before EotN came out). I stopped as well for about a year, but in 2008 I found GW again and i fought my way up in the HoH many, many times with different awesome guilds, until i got my Phoenix in the end of 2009/ beginning 2010. I started again in summer 2015 after some GW2, which didn’t had the same feeling at all. Our guild and alliance gave new life to HA, even there are mostly botting and ganking people. Pretty sad. We then decided to create another character and play it real oldschool in Prophecies without using the chest or any materials we already had. It was a AWESOME experience. If you have the time, do it. Do every quest and every single mission, using only the stuff you find or can trade/craft. Over the years I made a lot of good friends in the game and in real life. You can say, GW changed my life and all the experiences I made, still are a big part of me and will remain forever. This may sound very cheesy, but i think many people who actually played GW1 can relate to that. Times change, people change, but the memories will stay.

My favourite part of gw1 missing from guild wars 2 is the ability bar design and the adventure and reward you got from capping elite skills. Gaining actual abilities as rewards for very hard tasks and using those abilities like a recipe to experiment with is really one thing that made gw1 great.

Don't you wish we could erase our memories and experience Guild Wars Prophecies for the first time again? Listening to the soundtrack takes me back. I played when i was a junior in high school and got kicked off the football team because instead of going to summer camp, I stayed inside and played Guild Wars ALL summer. I literally missed every camp because I couldn't turn off my computer. When my friends came over to hang out, I didn't go because I couldn't turn off my computer. I was crazy addicted. Eat. Sleep. Guild Wars. Who knew what was waiting on my next adventure? I had to go see the Shiverpeaks for myself. During the evening/nights, I'd sit in Lions Arch/Droknar's Forge/Ascalon City just trading for hours and hours until my eyes could no longer stay open. Only then would I go to bed. So that I could rest up to do it again the next day.

***** True story, nice comment. People don't usually stress that that fact enough, but the poeple in that game were great indeed. That community was amazing. That's one of the most important parts of any MMO game, and Guild Wars scored over nine thousand on that department. I miss the guilds, I miss the friends and the teams, I miss trading with good people and not scammers, I miss being able to help a stranger in need and getting good help from another one with more experience when the tables turn and I turn out to need help that time. I miss meeting someone looooooooooooooooooong (game wise, like pre-searing) and than finding that person again, in a new guild, in the Hall of Heroes, in a mission outpost, anywhere, months after, and still remembering one another. Made a lot of friends with that game and they helped me to enjoy the game even more. Damn it, I really miss this game XD

ZabaZu That's what makes it so sad, knowing that I'll never have that feeling of first watching the Searing tear up Old Ascalon or seeing Rurik die (and then come back later as an enemy!) or find out that the White Mantle were bad guys all along! It's all old now, and I think part of me resents GW2 for not invoking those feelings again. Among other things (although I do enjoy it. It's definitely not near as good as 1 though).

Robert Davis I remember being a younger kid and waking up between 4 and 5 am, on school days, just to get a few missions in. GW1 is really my favorite game of all time because aside from it being an amazing game on its own, for me personally, it psychologically takes me back to a time in my life where I didn't have to worry about being late for work, selling my arm and leg to pay for college, or anything really. And I think I go back to GW1 because part of me misses that and it's the best way I know how to get it back.

***** "It psychologically takes me back to a time in my life where I didn't have to worry about being late for work, selling my arm and leg to pay for college, or anything really." I think that's definitely another part of the magic for me. It's why I listen to old video game music and watch old shows that I did as a kid, no matter how stupid they may be. I feel like the magic is gone but I try to bring it back regardless.

You know what is so special about this soundtrack? Apart from that I still play GW with my friends sometimes and it's no real nostalgia for me, it overwhelms me with nostalgia. I remember playing this game for the first time in the summer of 2006. Parents were not on good terms and the summer was shit here. I met a few people on this game I still hangout with to this day. But the most important for me is the music, which is so legendary that every player gets hit with nostalgia. Thank you Jeremy Soule❤

This game was the perfect mix of PVP and PVE. Both were very rewarding modes at the start of the game. (PVP became very toxic and snobbish later) I started this game with 17 years and when I stopped playing it because GW2 was released (and all the warnings that GW is dead became real) I was 25 years old. And during this time I played it daily and I had such a great time with my guild. So yeah, this game was a big part of my life. Sad that there never was another great game like this.

I love both games with all my heart, but every once in a while when I'm playing GW2, I can't escape feeling a certain way.. Like something's missing. Something that isn't there anymore. Maybe it's because of nostalgic reasons. Maybe because GW1 was my first MMO, and probably one of my favorite games ever. Maybe not. Truth be told, I don't even know myself.. But when I listen to this soundtrack, and ESPECIALLY The Great Northern Wall, I feel that way.

I got a bad feeling in GW2 too, first because they brought a steampunk theme (scarlet) and a sci-fi theme with the asuras (less present in GWEN). and second because we don't have the coop missions. Which were key to convey the storyline and to make the game immersive.

There is a *lot* that isn't there anymore. Beyond taking in the initial beauty of places like Divinity's Reach, Queensdale, swimming underwater with quaggans, and The Grove at Night, I've been unable to get into Guild Wars 2, and it breaks my heart. I feel like arena net sold out on me. I hoped GW2 would take everything that was great about GW1, and add to it whole new layers, dimensions and possibilities, but that's not what happened. GW2 has no meaningful overarching storyline. The personal storyline is boring, you can't play through it with your friends, and you aren't made to feel like a true hero/saviour of Tyria, but just one of many heroes doing petty errands. GW1 sent you on a long epic quest (with a compelling story, and point to it all) in which you were true hero, and it infused the entire game with purpose and meaning. GW2 maps are ghost towns after Queensdale upon release. The skills system in GW2 was boiled down to the lowest common denominator - in GW1 there were hundreds of skills to choose from for each profession that gave never ending variety and surprise, and I had endless hours of fun tinkering builds and trying out new spells/skills I hadn't even known about before. They removed secondary professions, which were a beautiful touch in GW1. In GW1 it was always clear what to do next, you were given both a powerful main story that filled you with the pride and purpose of your character who needed to "save the world" so to speak, and your were given loads of sideline / secondary quests, that you could do as and when you feel (and without them disappearing like this living world crap). In GW2 I find myself staring into space saying "ok... so what do I do, where am I meant to go to see some action that I actually care about?". Also the whole "200 years later" / technological advancement really takes away from the game for me. I love romantic medieval sword and sorcery style fantasy, like GW1. Firearms and a post-industrialised environment etc in GW2 utterly break that magical ambiance for me, not to mention lasers and robots which go even further to utterly ruin it. And where the hell are Guild Halls?! These are not only thematic, give a wonderful communal place to meet fellow members, organise games, or simply feel 'at home', but give meaning the concept of being in a guild. A guild without a guild hall is just a bunch of text messages on a screen. In PvE, enemies re-spawn about five seconds later, which makes the process of killing them seem utterly pointless and meaningless, and kills the suspension of disbelief. The absence of heroes and henchman's sucks. The level 80 end-game content cannot be played solo or even with one friend, but forces you to find a group or not play the game at all. I could go on and on. sigh Jeremy Soule is still a genius though.

I've played both 1 and 2 pretty extensively over the years and I'd have to agree that I enjoyed GW1 a lot more than 2. That said, I'm not completely giving up on GW2. The game itself is pretty young still and there's a lot of room for improvement in various aspects of the game. Part of me hopes that ANet will hear their player-base out and deliver on what we want as time goes on. Until something game-breaking comes out though GW1 still holds a place in my heart. GW1 itself did a pretty solid job on the immersion due to (imo) the co-op system it had, the instancing that it had, and the reallllllllly good story with the amazing backed up lore (I love learning about the lore of a game and the GW universe is at the top of my list). When you compare it to GW2, GW2 is arguably less immersive and (the worst part for me) it has such a weak personal story. I hope that ANet really picked up from their flaws in the personal story and improve on it through the living world. But when you think about it, we all knew it was going to happen like this. It's impossible to please everyone and unfortunately a lot of people that were interested in the storyline among other things just couldn't connect with GW2 as much as they had hoped (myself included.) All that said, ANet did a good job in other areas. The combat system is arguably a large improvement from the first game (although I'm not a fan of the steam-punk styled stuff) and even though there aren't nearly as many skills as there were for each profession in the original, I have no doubt that many more will be added as time goes on. If anything, it's the mainhand/offhand weapon gameplay that gets stale for me. If I'm a warrior with a sword mainhand, there's only one way that I can use that sword. I'm always going to have the same skills on that weapon and if I ever want to change it up, I'll need a new weapon set. I digress.. GW2 isn't perfect but there are things to enjoy about it. GW1 certainly had its flaws as well but we all came to love the game for all of our own reasons.

This music brings back so many memories. I remember thinking pre-searing was the entire game lol! Spent a total of 3300 hours in this game and thinking of picking it up again. GuildWars 2 is very boring with three lvl 80's. Cba to grind ages for a legendary. I miss GW1 PvP as well, much more fun. All that time screwing around in AB. And creating your own builds out of random skills was awesome. If only we could go back to 2007 again.. :(

The original games had so much more to offer imo :'( The new game is good, but way too focused to pulling in most amount of people, which makes it lose it's difficulty and atmosphere when looking at the entire picture. The result here is that most of the original playerbase, me included, quit altogether after hitting 80 on several chars. The PvP in the original indeed felt much more fun for me too. Also, GW2, no actual Guild Wars! Oh the irony. If only they'd continue on the old games... There even were plans for a Kickstarter to continue the Prophecies line, but Arenanet didn't approve it would seem.

If you've had the privilege of experiencing this gameworld during your teenage years, you can still dream it after all those years. Blue ice caves and frozen glaciers are still passing my memory. The music that draws you in. The color palette, bloom lightning and fairytale aesthetic created an experience where you were living your story among thousands of others living theirs. I've travelled to places on the other side of the world that were less memorable than the adventures I had with people in this VR from all over the world. Now it's a distant memory, the community I knew quite a few people in, no longer in touch. The lack of living in a timeless universe within it's own laws. The fun that was had with complete strangers and the humour, the nonsensical humour via the chatsystem. The obscene gestures you could make your character do to people you would never have to see again. Scolding them and npc's for being so insignificant. Those were the days!!

I take pride in knowing almost every run in guild wars. No other game mechanic has come close to being as fun as running in other games. My character has seen the whole world. Ran barefoot through deserts, exhaled misty breaths through the unforgiving Shiverpeaks, guided the lost through Cantha, mystified the curious in the Desolate Wastes, sought passage amongst the Eye of the North's heat ridden and dangerous jungles, ferried the impatient and rich to foreign continents, fought bravely for those seeking relinquishment from the Great Destroyer, Lich, Shiro, and Abaddon. I am Cody Battlefierce. D/A. I am swift. I am knowledgeable. I am a friend. I am a runner. (((Comment I made ~5 years earlier, and just wanted to keep track of it better. I still feel this)))

The beginning of Guild Wars was a special experience. Although I didn't know it at the time, this game was where I developed my passion for nature, beautiful music by Jeremy Soule, connections with strangers, and my passion for sales. I was between 10-15 years old when I first began playing the original Guild Wars. Little did I know this game would have such an influence on the man I am today. Over a decade ago, I played the game and hunted the titles and achievements, but eventually caught myself focusing on the beauty of the game and its community instead. From the beautiful ocean near Lion's Arch to the dramatic landscapes of the Shiverpeaks, I admired the game's design. Eventually, I grew tired of pursuing achievements. I decided to become a trader of valuable goods in the game's largest Traders market, Lion's Arch. I joined guilds and made friends. As a teenage kid, I caught myself sitting and talking to strangers all day and night. What brought me the most joy was being outside and enjoying the beauty of the game, talking to strangers, making deals, and listening to the incredibly rich orchestra music in game. Today, I am a door to door salesman. I'm outside every day enjoying nature and making deals through my conversations with strangers. In game, my first 100% completed titled was "Grand Master Cartographer". This meant I had been literally everywhere in game. Outside of my professional work as a salesman, I travel the world constantly and am earning my "Grand Master Cartographer" title in life, just like I had achieved in game. Coincidentally, I am also a creator of music and have an indescribably deep passion for classical music. This game was where many of my greatest passions were first discovered. Through a few good choices, I am able to live every day in real life as if I am still that teenage boy in Lion's Arch making deals, enjoying the music, making friends out of complete strangers, and enjoying the beauty of nature.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful story! It got me thinking. I was about 12-14 when I played Guild Wars, and my main character (who I've been playing on the last week or so!) is a Ranger. I did a bit of farming using traps, but I did a lot of running as well. I loved to look at the landscapes of Tyria and take screenshots and spend hours discussing the lore on the GWGuru forum. A few months later, I asked my dad for my first recurve bow. I haven't touched the thing in years but lately have thought about getting back into it. Like you, I love nature. I go hiking a lot and hope to travel more. I run as well. Sports never stuck with me, but being alone with my thoughts and pushing myself through the woods and wooded paths is a wonderful feeling. Other interests come and go, but the feeling of seeking adventure is something that began to resonate me around the age when I played GW. I think it's no coincidence that now as I approach my 28th birthday, the GW notsalgia has hit me like a train - and also a reminder of all these little things and how much they mean to me and how important that feeling of wonder is to living a good life. It's like our characters in the game taught us who we could become or something. I'm so glad to hear this game meant as much to other people as it did to me and I'm glad the servers are still up.

I started GW1 when i was 16. It was my first (and unique) online game that I've played like this. A really strange experience in hindsight. I'm not a fan of the others styles of online game, and I can't start a new life in a MMORPG now (i am 25). In only 2 years, I have played more than 2000 hours (almost 3 month in real time), it was a parallel life, the true. I remember that night of the new year, with my friend, in the same room, but on 2 PC, on the same server... When I listening this soundtrack, these memories are back, and I know that they will forever inscribed in my mind, like a graceful dream in this end of innocence time called adolescence.

I think i'll need to stream this little gem again .... A lot of people never had a chance to play this wonderful gem of a game. In the top 3 of my best games of all time ... Never seen a game giving you so many possibilities character wise. Mix and matching 2 classes as you pleased so you knew that Necromancer in front of you was different than yours. Of course guild wars 2 had to streamline everything ... Remove the dual class system .... Force attack skills to your weapon , etc .... Guess i'll get on it and record my journey through prophecies one last time , before the servers eventually go down. Keep the memories flowing .... Pre searing ascalon ... the beauty and purety of the land .... the destruction and despair of the searing ... the journey through the mountains .... The amazement of discovering the jungles, white mantle and Lions Arch ... Going through the deserts and face the trials to ascend .... realize that you can now switch 2nd profession so you start working your way back to collect every poeeislbe skill available ... I remember the end game missions in the snow were pretty tough but not as hard as the ones in the volcano .... Really wish i could go back 10 years back, just to discover all of this again .... Explore a little of Factions too .... and i just realized i never finished nightfall .... guess i need to add this to the list too ...

Those first few weeks of public release.. First time GvG with 8x W/Mo Healing Hands templates, haha. I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited! My addiction to this game absolutely devoured my teenage life, I messed up school big time. But if I could go back I probably wouldn’t change a damn thing 😂

Wellshem You are supposed to have the same feelings lol, they are actually quite similar in a lot of different ways if you have actually played the other guild wars games.

joao januario I agree, you memorize every melody straight away but it doesn't feel old or out of place. It just invokes all the right feelings.

GW1's atmosphere, music and general feel still beats the crap out of the kiddie game that is GW2.

This game was such a crazy good Christmas gift when I was a kid. I couldn't believe I'd gotten it and now the music and just traveling the overworld is always with me. I listen to the gw1 soundtrack in gw2 a lot of the times to remind me of those times as a kid.

I can remember my first day even playing this game. I used to think you needed to have the CD in order to play. My first day I was doing the tutorial bit at the start. I met this elementalist (I was an ele too) and he/she told me a few things about the game and told me to wait a second. He/she traded my a green staff that my ele still has as his main weapon to this day. I didn't know I could never get back to that area after I left and I felt so upset that I would never see or hear from this person ever again. I actually felt sad. I can also remember running with a beehive in a quest in the starting area too. The best game I have ever played even though I went on to play WoW a couple of years later but GW1 still to this day beats any game I have ever played (WoW, EVE Online, FF, lotro, Elder Scrolls Online).

My mother absolutely loved this game when I was a kid. I didn’t know until today that the music was composed by Jeremy Soule the same guy who composed the music for Skyrim. Love these tracks
