Twilight vampires aren't really vampires in the folklore, but Fairy's (no insult): They live in the woods, they hunt animals, they seduce humans to play with them or making them harm, so based in the folklore they are literally Fairies, no vampires.

'Mormonized'? A.K.A. bland and boring? It's okay, you can go ahead and say it, Guillermo. It's an absolutely spot on description. *(I was raised Mormon and lived this insane lifestyle well into my 40's.)

I agree, theres nothing wrong with a vampire romance, as long as its done right, like with "Let me in", but "the Twilight series" has been messing up the clever idea and making it the dumbest romance ever written as well as a hated concept, damn it Stephanie Mayer, you even messed that idea up too!

In my opinion the best portrayal vampires ever received was Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark. They were grotty, fang-less, brutal trash that still carried the sensuality inherent in the vampire myth. They moved from place to place around the Oklahoma dustbowl killing at will, operating more or less how what amounts to a gang of killers would operate. Interestingly, their way of feeding, I.E. ripping your throat out with their teeth and lapping up the result, is part of the original myth.

Yes, vampires have been reduced to being "cute, troubled boyfriends". They're all James Dean Of The Dead.

Vampires are just fictional characters and folklore serves as simultaneously a study of what people might have thought in the past and concepts to take/alter from for making more fiction. I'm an atheist and love reading folklore found in the cultures around the world. ^^ It is also interesting to think about the psychology behind what writers put into characters.

i read the first strain novel and to hear del toro talk about vampires beings "castrated" and "asexual" immediately reminds me of the fact that his vampire creations, as a byproduct of the changing process, lose their genitals

I dunno if it counts, but I thought The Walking Dead was a decent show about zombies. I watch TV like, never, so I've only seen an episode or two, but what I saw was pretty good. When it comes to vampires, no one will quite do it better than the 1992 film adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I agree about Hollywood, though. Its become too much of a product; it's always been a product but now it's this ugly media machine.

Rise of the Lycans shouldn't have existed. Underworld was never intended to be trilogized, but the first one did well enough that the producers were blinded by the dollar signs in their eyes. That said, seriously, Nosferatu from like the 60s, and Bram Stoker's Dracula from 1999 are bar-none the best vampire flicks. Period.
@heimdal8
@heimdal8 11 жыл бұрын
The original Nosferatu was a silent film from the 20's, yes, but Werner Herzog made a remake in the 70's with Klaus Kinski as the vampire. Also, the "Bram Stoker's Dracula is from 1992 - not 99.

Someone asked me why zombies and sparkly vampires have gotten so popular lately. I offered them my personal theory. (1) Stephanie Meyer's sparkly "defanged" vampires explode in popularity (with teenaged girls) (2) Everyone who is NOT a teenage girl despises Meyer's "defanged" vampires, and longs for a time when monsters just wanted to eat people. (3) Zombies are the ultimate answer to Twilight vampires: they are their polar opposite. Zombies don't want to seduce the living; they want BRAAAINS.
