@@Lord_Inquisitor_Ignis I think there is a chance that it is a mix of both. Like, maybe he is not disappointed in Decimus's assessment, like he's simply not wrong, but rather his conclusion. Look at what he said first: "You have a facility for empathy." He's kinda nudging him to the conclusion Girlyman wants. He wants him to be empathetic and to draw a conclusion born from that empathy. Yet when pushed on it, Decimus just comes to the same conclusion as the rest of the Imperium. A conclusion that has in many ways been responsible for how far humanity has fallen.

This highlights an aspect of Guilliman that few see save for a select few. When the facade drops, Guilliman is "concentrated human". Hid ability to lead doesn't stem from his intelligence, ferocity, or willpower. It stems from his love for people and his ability to process what others cannot even fathom. This is made even more evident when we consider that the big G was rallying worlds to his cause before he'd even met his father. The big E was so impressed that he left Ultramar to Guilliman. On top of all that, big G was rebuilding the empire during the herecy and realized that his brothers were better candidates for ruling. Once he discovered Terra was in danger, he turned all ambitions towards saving his father, brothers, and people. Robot Gorillaman is one of my favorite characters and why I play Ultramarines.

In the Dawn of Fire series, one of the Custodian leaders considers Guilliman to be a massive threat should he turn traitor. His justification is that Guilliman built the 500 worlds of Ultramar in the time it took most of his brothers to take one, and some didn't even manage that. He considers Guilliman to be by far one of the most dangerous of all primarchs.

I don't think it was the theoretical that Rowboat was disappointed with here, but the practical, the conclusion "they need a firm hand". G-man is acutely aware of how easy it is for Astartes and Primarchs to become tyrants, so both himself and his sons have a history of not taking positions of power when they could, or of taking them temporarily and stepping down as soon as the crisis has passed. I think Robbie was disappointed that Felix didn't seem to have that ideal in mind.
@Happyman28778
@Happyman28778 Ай бұрын
Think there’s a lot of ways you can take it. For one Guilliman has always been the one to push Space Marines and humans to work together. He forced the space marines apart solely to project humanity and ensure humans were in firm control of the reigns of power. That hasn’t change even as imperial regent as his only acts of removing the corrupt former rulers of high Tera were immediately justified by there failed coup against the current high lords when Guilliman was in the Indomitus crusade. All of this together paints a picture of primarch whose priority is human control. If a son of his who especially valued for his humanity comes to the conclusion of space marine authoritianism inorder to rule the imperium I think the most plausible reaction of disappointment is in his conclusion rather than the merits of it as it isn’t really a deeply thought out conclusion. Any investigation into imperial history will see that strong men have done far more damage than what distributed power could, where a heavy hand has done far more damage than an outstretched one. Baddab and the age of apostasy is a perfect example and one they’d all be painfully aware of . Meanwhile basic humans have kept the empire together for 9,000 years against Chaos Tryandis, Orks, and Necrons without a single primarch to help them

Well the majority of people vote emotionally because their goals are inherently emotional: People want to live good and happy lives. The numbers and big picture don't matter if life isn't worthy living. Honestly, he was almost right. A single person is smart, and many people are just a herd of animals. But when he concluded that means they need a firm hand is where he was wrong. Order is important as much as making sure it is maintained, but thats secondary to the most important thing. People need a guiding gentle hand. Someone that is there not just to tell them what they should do and what is right or wrong. They need someone that genuinely cares about them, their plights and their concerns. They need someone that doesn't see them as ignoble or useless, or thay thinks themselves to be above the people they are leading. The best leader is one that looks at their people as people instead of just numbers, and Reboute above everyone knows that.

This holds as much truth as the people are willing to change. You can guide a horse to water but you can't make it drink. What then do you do with the horse? You either leave it to die of thirst, let it free to drink from whatever contamination you tried to take it away from or force it to drink from the trough.

@@heeyyypeoplebut at the same time, if you force a human to do or think something some will accept it as you planned, but plenty more will rebel against you because you forced them into it. They will resent that thing regardless of how good it was for them and will likely get rid of it after you have passed. Force only goes so far with humans, if it truly worked then why would we have rebellions and civil wars? In my opinion, a firm and gentle hand are tools to handle different challenges, like the sword and the pen.
@heeyyypeople
@heeyyypeople Ай бұрын
@@davidalejandro441 You are right in the short term. But if someone is ruthless enough then those who would keep that grudge for generations would be removed and eventually the hatred would be forgotten or laid to rest. I would say an action like that should be reserved for the worst situations but most humans don't have enough time to make a real change there are many instances in history where someone's goodwill and well laid out gentle plan is contorted and becomes the gospel and to date has not returned to its proper form because the people accept the warped version. Humans are paradoxical creatures, we will exalt the worst when it makes us feel nice and so your only real option when being gentle is complete manipulation so that everyone relates the event to feeling great and won't want to change. But then you face another problem, one many people trying to do good right now are facing. You are not immaculate and no matter what someone tells you it will affect how they see you. They may not resent you or place a wall between you, they may even be closer to you than before but it will forever change your image in their eyes. And mobs do not like that.
@informationyes

@@heeyyypeople Its not really those in charge being ruthless but simply exercising authority thats more firm than anything on the direction they will go, if they are too ruthless it doesnt need multiple generations to manifest as they can start a rebelien in that one as has happaned, any smart monarch knows not to push the people too far.
@heeyyypeople
@heeyyypeople Ай бұрын
@@informationyes I think there's a misunderstanding. 1. Who says the general populace needs to know that you are the reason x family disappeared? Whether it's hiding it or propaganda deflecting blame. 2. Who says the people must rebel? Manipulation buys more time than you think, who says what you've done won't be in full swing and the people's opinion won't be what solidifies your reign? 3. Why are you considering the general populace? With things like that its leaders that will be targeted, in the end if both parties have public dirt then the one who offers more to the people will be chosen. Actual opinion of the general populace matters little in games of manipulation, its about who can stir the crowd in their favor more.

The 'heavy hand' the Imperium used to bring those worlds back into compliance because they 'didn't know what was good for them'. Guilliman was specifically disappointed in the "firm hand" part. Because he has seen already what this "firm hand" does, back in the great Crusade. Where the Imperium absolutely crushed worlds, not because they were fallen to Chaos or in danger to, but because they simply were different and often times wished to be left alone. Guilliman knows ruling with an Iron Fist and crushing any opposition, like the Imperium did for oh so long before his return, is not the Answer. He made that point multiple times since his return. So he naturally is disappointed in his Son, because he knows all too well how fast this firm hand turns into an iron fist.

Humans do what they have to do to bring in income, so that they can satiate their animalistic desires, such as wanting to buy clothes to look pretty to attract a more desirable mate. Even the fields of philosophy and science are driven by instinctual urges like curiosity.

He doesn’t sound disappointed in his son, only his answer. The son’s conclusion is basically “People need leadership.” Which is a conclusion both Guilliman himself and his own father the Emperor reached long LONG ago. I think Bobby simply wished it wasn’t so. That he could trust in people to be more than mere animals. And he can. But only if he can forgive the animals when they get out from time to time.

Calling Guilliman disappointed in Felix is grossly misinterpreting the situation. Guilliman isn't disappointed in Felix. He's disappointed in the situation. He's disappointed that one of his more empathetic sons says "Hey, this is part of your former realm is so corrupted and rotten we had to declare martial law to even attempt to fix it." With that, the realization that for Guilliman to save the imperium, he may have to become one of the tyrants he despises.

In a same way that battlebrother being excelent warrior does not mean he will be a good tactician. This isn't the first time Guilliman has been disappointed by one of his sons. In the Horus Heresy series there's a short story about an Ultramarine who follows a prototype of the Codex Astartes to the letter during a wargames training scenario. I'm paraphrasing here, but the long and short of the conversation was: Marine: "I don't know why I lost, I followed the book to the letter." Guilliman: "That is dumb and so is the other thing you said. Don't follow the Codex blindly, use some initiative, gee whiz....."

I don't understand why he would be disappointed. He asked him what his instinct told him, he answered, the impulse to control and justify that control is fairly natural, it is REASON that elevates us and he has exhibited that reasons in his own self-reflection. He doubts himself. That is crucial for reasoned humanity, too much self-certainty is blinding. His first honest answer was "I don't know."

I wouldn’t take that as him being disappointed directly at that son, more so that - that way of thinking is going to be more common amongst his sons than he could’ve realised before because in the end they are taken away as children and brought up in the art of war.

An important thing to note is that even though he was disappointed by his statement, Felix is still his equerry and a ruling Tetrarch or Ultramar. Sure, Guilliman didn’t like that response, but he made it so that Felix would only ever have to answer to himself and Calgar. I honestly love Felix as a character, and as messed up as what he said was, I have a very difficult time arguing against his point, especially given what happened with humans in Godblight
