Reworking of the classic "Chamber of Horrors Guillotine" kit by Aurora/Polar Lights; to more accurately resemble the original 1792 model as used in the period known as the French Revolution.
Modifications include:
. Lowering of the lunette
. Lowering & simplification of the bascule
. Extension of the chapeteau
. Redesign of the blade raising/release mechanism
* The included blade/mouton assembly is based on the more recent Nineteenth Century version and my decision to retain this anachronistic feature is based solely on the functionality of the finished kit.

Excellent build. I have Dolls and Hobby Guillotine ordered. Hopefully I can use some of your ideas on that one, being not the Aurora kit. Thanks....🤩👍

I just checked and it seems to be a rebranded version of the same kit with the addition of a pretty cool cardboard display/photographic backdrop, so good luck. BTW I didn't put much planning into this conversion, but in hindsight, it would have been more historically accurate if I had relocated the angled bottom braces to further down the uprights.

The Dolls and Hobby kit is more like the original Aurora kit in that a rectangular peg (the original had a round peg) holds the head on, not magnets. Of course, if you already got your kit you'll see that for yourself.😁

@@IMTHATMAN999 I still have bits of my Polar Lights reissue from about 25 years ago and the head has a round peg.

@@JohnBoy-Ramone I bought the Aurora guillotine back in 1964. I used to have all the Universal monsters, King Kong, and Godzilla models. I eventually got rid of them. I was terrible at making models when I was a kid. So it's nothing to lament ha ha. By the way, I had all the medieval knights models Aurora made. I did my usual crappy job making them. I got rid of them eventually. In the late 1990s a local hobby store had all of them, in perfect condition, in the boxes and unopened. I don't collect to sell. So I made them all. I still have them. Over the years I've acquired various manufacturer's figures (not models)of the Universal monsters, King Kong and Godzilla. They are all superior to the Aurora sculpts. However, in the last few years, I wanted to replace the Aurora Guillotine model. I saw the Polar LIghts kit but at $100.00 I couldn't justify getting it. I mean, it was only a few dollars when I was a kid. It's just a model! Anyway, I saw that Dolls and Hobby had a kit for $45.00 and bought it. I intend to modify it to make it more authentic as you did. So I'll be doing some research for the next few days. Thanks for the video. It encouraged me to get the model since I could see it was nearly identical to the original.I hadn't thought about modifying the guillotine until I saw your work. Fortunately, my skill at making things is a hell of a lot better nowadays.

Johnboy, How and what did you use to extended crossbeam offset? Hope ya don't mind me asking? Really like how yours turned out. Picked up putty and magnets today...

I didn't really measure anything too precisely (or plan things out in advance) and at 2:19 you can see that I removed more from one end than the other, but in hindsight it would have been much easier to wait until the uprights and platform had been assembled before committing to any serious hacking up of the one part that gives it its structural integrity. The crossbeam was altered before I decided to document the build, but as far as I can remember, I first cut the very end off the assembled crossbeam and then inserted an extension piece, which was cannibalized from the unused foot stand. I was originally just going to relocate the pulley to above the crossbeam, similar to the later model guillotines.

Thank you for reply. I used what I could make out what you did and added to it. I also used foot stand, before I read your response. I primed my pieces today. Waiting on some paint colors to finish. A lot of extra work, but turning out nice. Will send pic when complete. Thanks again for the inspiration.

What a disturbing choice for a “model,” some might say. Others, a coffee table “conversation piece.” It would make a good demonstration model for a guillotine salesman to, at the right moment, bring out of his bag with a flourish to close the deal!
