no they're not low maintenance, they're high maintenance, you need to take care of them daily, let them free roam, keep food and water in check, clean cage once per 3 days, spend time with them, and let them be part of the house. Think 10x times before you take one or more.

For the whole year or two that they're seniors 😂 Don't talk about Guinea pigs like they're a parrot or turtle. That's a challenging investment that can outlive you. A Guinea pig is the next step above basic fish and few steps below Chinchillas or Rabbits.

@MrTekbow investment isn't just financial. Time and Emotional investments are usually much harder to manage. Considering Turtles and parrots, both have a good chance to outlive the owner/be with the owner their entire life. The emotional and time investment is arguably that of a full term human relationship, for some people. You only being able to see investments as financial already tells me everything I need to know about you. ^feels gross talking like this

@kirijunx Nah, this person wants to feel like they're a hero or working as hard as a rancher because they look after what? Guinea pigs?🤣 And don't worry, Guinea pigs won't be forgotten. They're used to teach children a bit of responsibility all over the world. And treating them like a toy? Really. Every Guinea pig owner I've ever seen has turned their animals into accessories. Guinea pigs live wild lives in some places, but in homes, they're all treated like "toys." Want to help Guinea pigs? Don't buy them, don't breed them, and they'll have happier lives without us.

That's a very oddly specific domesticated animal to ban, which makes me wonder the reasoning. Is there possibly a large or noticeable invasive presence of feral and stray guinea pigs that only happened due to some people who thought releasing them would be okay or some others who werent good at making sure their's couldn't escape? That's what I could maybe think of to how a country to react to help keep the amount from growing any further out of control.

@@CarlytheWolf23t’s not that they banned the animal for being invasive, it’s banned to own just one because Guinea pigs are very social herd animals that need other piggies to be around. so it’s not that they banned owning Guinea pigs, it’s that you have to have more that one

If you're planning to get guinea pigs be sure to educate yourself on their common illnesses and keep an emergency medical kit for them. Many of their issues can be treated at home but some require vet care so be prepared for that. All pets deserve medical treatment if needed. If your dog is sick you take it to the vet. Same with guinea pigs. Be sure you have a vet in your area that treats guinea pigs.

My household has had guineas 4 about 15 yrs. Need 2 find an exotic animal vet(guineas, iguanas etc). Make sure their all the same sex. Males r in heat often. Females CAN get pregnant at 2 months old. Ideal time by 1 yr old, no older than 3 yrs old, 4. After that dangerous 4 her. Separate M/F babies by 6-7 weeks old.

As soon as u clean their cage, they shit in it the minute ur done. Don't use any chemicals 2 clean their cage, only use pet safe cleaners. Our 1 guinea would get a cyst on her back. Vet would cut it & squeeze out cream cheese looking nastiness & cyst would b flat & empty. Twice vet did it. 3rd time I sterilized a razor blade & lanced a tiny area & squeezed out the cr.cheese stuff. Yeah I know, I'm not a vet. Vet showed me how. I've never had any medical issues with any guineas except this 1 girl. I had 3 girls 2gether. 2 ganged up on 3rd, bites. After few months, girls switched off. 1 of the bullies was now being bullied. I gave extra attention 2 the now bullied 1. I cover their cage at night for privacy. A sheet in summer, blanket in winter.

Uh… low maintenance??? They need a TON of care and attention, not to mention space. They also cannot be alone, end of story, and need at least one cagemate. They are extremely social and bond very closely to their cagemates, and even get depressed if kept alone. Plus, they tend to have health problems and sometimes need a lot of vet visits, which is both expensive and time consuming.

These are REALLY high maintenance. I had 3, every one of them got sick at some point of life. Roxi became blind (still was the most active and healthy one), Judi and Szarika had cysts in ovaries needed to be removed, Judi had to have one front leg removed and other legs covered in some gel and big ass bandages as well and Szarika had a big wart. Everything was expensive (surgeries, medicine and bandages and stuff) and time consuming to take care of them. And also nerve racking. My parents would go weak if they had to change bandages, apply eye drops and give them injections so me (10yo at that time) had to do everything. When I think about it now I don’t think Judi and Szarika were even happy pigs later in life, all the time on medicine and with uncomfortable equipment. And I talk only about health issues. There are also daily tasks you have to do. I have a dog now and I can say guinea pigs are a lot worse to take care of, so think twice before getting them.

I have one Guinea pig. His name is Jett, he’s black and white, with a little bit of brown fur. It’s very easy to take care of him. All we have to do is make sure he doesn’t escape his cage, feed him, make sure he has hay, give him water, clean his cage and give him bath, clip his nails, etc. I’ve had him for about a year now. But Jett wasn’t always mine. He was my friend’s Guinea pig before. Once my friend moved to Germany temporarily, he gave us Jett. But the sad part is that we were going to get two Guinea pigs. The other Guinea pig was a wiry small brown male named Squirrel. He was a real sweetheart, and he was very mischievous. I loved that Guinea pig. Until one fateful day, Squirrel got sick and died. I'm a former guinea pig owner as I owned 2 when I *was* 7. And I immediately gave them back to the pet shop. No, No they are not low maintenance. I was a very dumb child back then and never did my research. It's very difficult to take care of them as you need 2 . They're very social animals and need alot of space to roam. They poop ALOT and need plenty of food. Their cage needs cleaning every 3 days as the mess they make is plenty. The reason why I gave them back to the pet shop is because it's better to return a pet when u can't even properly take care of the pet,in hopes of someone else taking care of them better than I did. Please, never get a pet without researching about them or if u dont have the proper needs for them if you really want one. This goes for all pets. Again, *guinea pigs are NOT low maintenance, a living thing is extremely high maintenance to take care of.* If u want a easy pet, get a rock

So bloody cute, watching them go down the slide. I’d love to own a few, as pets. Am I right in guessing that they only have around 2-4 years lifespan, like mouse, gerbils etc? I rescued 2 gerbils, about 12 years ago and I really loved them. I didn’t expect to bond with them because I just thought that they would be scared of me and when I’m around, I thought they would be in hiding and come out at night but I was so wrong. They was always out , playing with each other and what shocked me even more, is that I’d be sitting in my room, watching tv, usually and out of corner of my eye, I see them jumping up and down and when I actually looked over, they was clearly jumping up and down to get my attention. So I’d go over and put my hand in cage and they would climb on and play. It was funny because even tho we had a great bond, most of the time when they was climbing on me, they would often settle on my shoulder or even my head and then they would all of a sudden, freeze, like they was scared and I’d have to be like, “hey girl, what’s wrong? We’re buddies, why the freeze up” I also bought them exercise wheels, so they could run around together and have some fun. A few times they would run out of my room and I’d hear them bouncing down the stairs. They was always ok and I think they liked the thrill of the ride. Oh they used to love chewing cardboard toilet tubes or anything cardboard. Sorry for the life story 😂

Ours was spoilt. Originally thought they'd be great to eat left over salad stuff, etc, but nope I'd end up spending so much on fresh fruit & vegetables just for them. & they knew what time dinner was, they'd start demanding it. So cute they were.

My 18 year old loves his guinea pigs, but we had no idea how much they pooped. They poop and pee all of the time. But we keep coming up with more effective ways to help them stay clean and happy becuase my whole family has become quite partial to them!

Not what I call low maintenance! Cleaning the cage of poops must be done daily. Fresh Hay, veggies, and water are needed daily. Plus, there are not many vets out there who deal with exotic animals (guinea pigs are considered exotic) so you may have to drive quite far to find a vet. I love my piggies but they can be a chore sometimes!

If you have one keep it as far away from your bedroom. my sister had the idea of keeping it in her room and she regretted it.

I had just one guinea pig and she was never a problem 🤷🏽‍♀️ yeah, some guinea pigs like others and all but you don’t have to get two or three. Of course people recommend that but its not a necessity. The guinea pig I had didn’t like sharing with others, period so anytime we tried introducing her to a new guinea pig she started the fights. She wanted her food, water and sleeping spots to herself and that’s just how she was. Every guinea pig has a different personality. People constantly tried to shame me because I only had one guinea pig 😂 but in reality if they read what I was saying maybe they would’ve caught on. I tried introducing her to several guinea pigs and it never worked out so she would prefer it just be me and her instead of me, her and other guinea pigs. It’s like how you have your own room and your mom and dad try to make you share a room with someone… nine times out of ten you probably don’t wanna share a room and that’s fine

Guineas are high maintenance and can be adventurous so let them roam and give them food and they will be happy.

1. "Becoming"?! 2. As a guinea pig owner, the cute little buggers are not low maintenance. The amount of cleaning is insane. Plus they need enrichment like any other pet!

They’re actually so sociable that in Sweden (I think), it’s actually illegal to own a solo Guinea pig! Please don’t keep these little babies by themselves, they get incredibly lonely and depressed. Please keep them in at least pairs

In the US they are considered "exotic" pets. This means many vets (who work only with cats and dogs) do not know how to take care of them.
