The R80GS Adventure Guy

Күн бұрын

We had a couple of days mid week, 3 BMW GS's and a thirst for adventure. Phil was riding a current R1250GSA, Dan was on an oil cooled R1200GS and I was riding a 39 year old R80G/S PD, the model that started the GS dynasty. The bikes spanned 6 generations and almost 40 years of BMW adventure bikes, and we wanted some adventure, plenty of dirt and we had an idea about tackling some more challenging terrain.
We wanted to head inland from the South Coast of NSW, Australia and explore some trails we hadn't done. I really liked the sound of Guineacore Fire trail and I managed to convince the other boys to have a go. I mean, how hard could it be?

I’m Riding a 2006 1200GS and Love mine. I think the GS is the best Bike I have ever Ridden. I grew up Riding Motorcross then went on to Street Racing to Harleys. I wouldn’t Trade my GS for anything except for maybe a Newer one. The only thing about the Liquid Cooled is the extra Weight. The lack of so much Electronics on the 2006 means less things to Fail.

Went this track 4 weeks ago. Turned around at the white car. Today I went in this direction and had a chat with 3 dirtbike rider.. they said.. easy on the other side. So I gave it a try. I don’t know.. but hell no.. that’s not easy 😂 got stuck on that bike step in the corner. Turned around.. they fished down on the river and came up with me. Easy ride on a dirtbike. But on a 790.. just to steep. Feels like 30 degree on some spots. Impressive how you managed to get the gs through there.

Yes, seen the guinecore before on vid and it didn't look any easier this time - not for big adv bikes! Your philosophical note on 'adventure' - "being uncertain about the outcome" - rings true.. which is why I doubt I'll be doing the guinecore anytime soon as the outcome would be certain 😬🙄🤣 Agreed, Range Fire Trial is a hoot, mostly fast with enough challenge to keep you focused. Honestly I think that the R80 was the best bike of the 3 for the trip. Enough power, lighter and the 21" front wheel. I assume that you had the traction control and ABS off and the suspension set in off road mode!

R80 was definitely the best. Traction control always on (not enough power to spin), ABS always on (front brakes too weak to lock) and the suspension is always set to sogggy ;)

Thanks, glad you liked the video. The 800 is nearly 40 years old, there is no way that your not going to have things wearing out. But I have to agree, what they used to do on these things at Dakar is amazing and a standard version would struggle to survive.

The bike that gets you riding is always best! I can't imagine anyone seriously considering all 3 of these bikes, however.... The R80G/S is the lightest by far, but has no power, no brakes and no suspension. But it is cool. The 1200 is the best budget option by far and the 1250 is amazing, I know the multimedia system was much better than mine!

A fire trail for what??? A bulldozer?? Not fit for a vehicle of any kind. This is like black bear road/pass in Colorado usa. Next video, please fix the camera angle when riding. Looking at the speedo and handlebars is not scenery. Don't talk so low when doing a walk around, difficult to hear you. I loved the video for the scenery and rough terrain. It was great. Thanks for the feedback, there is definitely lots of room for improvement with the camera angles and audio, I’m sure the next one will be better. @@oldGSguy She got a rare heart disease that mostly male cats get and she died about 9 months ago. They get a blood clot from the heart down the back and blocks blood supply to the back legs and either kills them instantly or paralyses them for weeks or months. She was like a newborn baby at 8 years old and I had to attend to her 24/7. She lived 3 weeks and finally had more blood clots and strokes and had to have her put to sleep. Guess I'll never get over her. 😢 They just rip your heart out when you have to clean them up all the time like a baby. Graeme was maybe 10 years older than me and had a young girlfriend. we sent pictures. It lasted a few months and then poof he was gone. So sad to destroy one's self. Thanks.

Certainly nothing graceful about these big GS's crossing creeks and muddy ruts, foot dabbing hill climbs, and the full three man lifts. How many times can you drop a GS and not crush yourself.....seems lucky you made it to me....I guess crashing is part of it.

@@oldGSguy All the more reason to not bring a 250kg behemoth on a steep sloped rocky trail with moderate skills. Watching that rider go off balance navigating that washed out slope raises the question as to why he was out there getting well over his head and risking such a crushing experience. The GS1250 is simply a dying breed. Too heavy, clumsy, and dangerous. I don't know what makes people think they can take these bikes on such terrain. You said it yourself...once it starts to go...there is nothing you can do....a recipe for disaster.
