I've been a fan of all jumpers since I was at the Evel Knievel jump at Ontario moter speedway 1972 . There needs to be 4 categories of jump records , ramp to ramp , ramp to dirt ramp, ramp to flat ground , dirt ramp to dirt ramp . If you watch dirt landing ramps there taller wider longer more room for riders to land.

I can agree with that. Different classes of jumps. You could break it down further by what type of motorcycle was used.

@scottmcman76596 жыл бұрын
"Very easy to do""? For whom? Yes, these guys have some extreme advantages, such as advanced bike design, computer assisted CAD to build ramps, computer simulations that can run any scenario and calculate angles, horsepower needed, throttling, braking, distance, etc...then combine all the data together to run 100 or 1000 of the best set up scenario that will predict odds of success. And yes, Evel was essentially a man with a slightly modified Harley jumping with ramps build by journeymen carpenters who just eyed everything up. All the data was calculated with pencil and paper and Evel was no math wiz. He based his set up on his past jumps. While Evel had it much harder, you can't bash these guys. They are very talented and after the last jump, the guy knew that was it. One more and his bike would have come apart on landing. The pain he experienced was real and I wouldn't be surprised if he found out later that he had in fact cracked or broken some bones. I grew up watching Evel and loved him. He did some amazing things with old technology and primitive situations. But, you have to admit, sometimes Evel was either stupid, or crazy. I know for a fact that there were some jumps he knew were going to turn out bad, but he didn't want to disappoint the fans. The only jump that really bothered me was the Snake River "jump", which began fine, but ended up as just him strapped in a rocket. It seemed like he was selling himself out by the time he did it and I thought he would easily make it in a rocket, but as we know, it failed and could have ended as his most tragic. I think that failure was also due to rudimentary and primitive planning/engineering. As I said, I loved Evel and will always view him as the #1 bike jumper of all time, but I also respect the new guys, even Robbie made jumps look easy as compared to his father. One thing I think is appropriate is that many of these guys give lots of credit and respect to Evel.
@lauriewagner43494 жыл бұрын
@@scottmcman7659 the reason why Evel's Skycycle didn't make it was bcs the parachute was pulled out by a bad design on the takeoff ramp. Therefore, the Skycycle didn't pickup the speed that it should have as it was taking off. Mr. Truax (sp) , the Engineer from NASA that built the Skycycle, took the blame for the poor parachute design and for the hole Grand Canyon project failing. I watched his stunts while growing up in the "70s. I was a tomboy! And I grew up riding and jumping dirt bikes.
@scottmcman76594 жыл бұрын
@@lauriewagner4349 - Here's the problem with the entire scenario. It was not a "skycycle". Oh, it started out that way and I was really into the first prototype, but, by the time the stunt came, it no longer resembled a motorcycle in any way. It was nothing more than a rocket launch. Extremely disappointing to me. However, as you come back to reality, you realize that even if a motorcycle were shot out of a cannon, it likely wouldn't make it 1,600 ft. I don't know if you remember, but stuntman Eddie Braun did in fact succeed in replicating Evel's jump with the same setup, albeit likely updated electronics and a parachute that wasn't going to malfunction. Then again, when you strap a rocket on, 1,600 ft should be the least you can do. Evel once said: "I did everything by the seat of my pants. That's why I got hurt so much." Bur, that's what made it more exciting. Knowing this guy had little technical aspects to his jumps. He just went out and jumped. I'm sure he could have hired a team of experts that would have helped him to be more successful, but he wasn't like that.

@scottmcman76596 жыл бұрын
Bob, I don't think the producers care if this woman knows a piston from a petcock. She's just there because she can speak on camera and look good. In fact, most of what she's saying is read off of cue cards or a teleprompter, so I wouldn't be too hard on her. That said, bikes can be modified to perform at much higher levels than stock bikes and I'm sure both guys have modified their machines to fit them. I do think the guy on the 250 knew there was a limit to how much his bike could handle. Especially the frame and shocks.
