So... what about Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, George Benson, Zachary Breaux - these comments... Don´t get me wrong, Larry is a g.o.a.t. with his ability to outline a melody from a chord change - unparalleled but there are other players who did the same in THEIR way.

Larry has the vibe of a zen master holding a blood stained axe - he’s simultaneously calming and terrifying on guitar. I’m picturing Wong and Lettieri practicing extra for this session, feeling nervous, and totally at ease after 5 min in the room.

And yet, Larry WOULD NOT HAVE DONE this project/interview if he didn't see something in the skillsets of Wong and Littieri, and the musical opportunity presented. I once saw Larry interviewed at a Sweetwater Gearfest where he didn't even pick up a guitar.

Cory himself is Mister Covert Chops! He rarely seems to play anything more than "Dinga-Dinga-Dinga-Dinga-Dinga-Dinga-Dinga..........", but he plays that PERFECTLY, which ain't easy. And when he does something more, or solos, it's clear just how much guitar he can pull out if the song requires it. In that he reminds me of Walter Becker - who mostly just chunked rhythm, played the occasional bluesy, economical lead, and tried to look as dyspeptic as Donald Fagen does. Of course, Walter could never sound as dyspeptic as Donald does, no one can.

The year was 1986, I just graduated college in San Diego and moved to a small (2300 people, one 4 way stop) town in Montana. One day I'm working out in our garden, with the radio propped in my bedroom window facing out so I can listen to music while I worked. Of course, there was no jazz stations, so I was playing the local "easy listening" station. All of a sudden a tune comes on that I was so immediately taken with that I ran in to the house, looked up the station in the phone book and called to find out who and what was playing. Turns out it was Smiles and Smiles to Go. From that moment on I was hooked as a Larry Carlton fan. I almost came out of my seat when Larry referenced it and played a few of the opening cords. Another side story: In the late 70's I was in HS at a small, conservative Christian school. Proms and dances were "of the devil," so we had "Banquets" instead. One year we booked two Christian musicians to perform - Eric Nelson and Michelle Pillar. Between her voice and her beauty, as a teenager, I was smitten. What a shock to find out years later that she and Larry are married. Funny the little connections that are made throughout our lives!

I found Cory's music recently and it really arrived in good time. I'm feeling very sad lately, due to work, relationships and the fact I'm getting deaf. I feel abandoned in every way but I pretend to be strong even though I'm losing the battle. But with Cory's music, I feel really happy, I feel like I can do anything, it's like the sunshine is everlasting. I would like to thank Cory for making such an amazing music, it really helps me to get through all this shit, so I'll listen to this amazing music as long as I can. Thanks Cory, God bless you and your whole band and guests.

I met Larry at a clinic in Glasgow Scotland and asked him about his involvement in the Court and Spark sessions. I asked him if Joni had charts or anything mapped out for him and the other fellas, and he told me Joni just let them all do their thing. Being a massive Joni fan I found this so intriguing but not surprising, as Larry's licks are so recognisable. When I heard this recording for the first time back in 74, Joni's amazing song writing, the rhythm section and the guitar work weaving through that record made it a masterpiece. That chat you both had with him about those sessions reminded me of the stuff I asked him. Larry was and is a real gent and I can't believe it's nearly 50 years since I became a fan of his. . . . . Thanks for this, Cory, Mark and Larry.

I'm impressed, Cory, by your interviewing skill. You keep the pace moving, you listen, and your enthusiasm for the material is obvious. I had the pleasure of working as the mixing assistant for Larry on two new tracks that were on the "Collection" album.... "Small Town Girl," and "For Heaven's Sake." It was truly a career highlight. On a more somber note...I was on a session with Rik Pekonnen (one of his go-to engineers) the morning Larry was shot by a home intruder. Larry literally "dodged a bullet" and we are lucky that we still have him with us as a musical inspiration. Again...great interview.

It really hurt when Larry said “because I’m here you’re talking about music that’s 45 years old you guys can move on to more relevant (I think he said contemporary but I definelty see how he felt) because I’ve seen so many examples recently of people from around Larry’s age group and above that instead of feeling honored and looked up to just feeling irrelevant and kind of out of the question while younger guys do their thing and I LOVE how much respect there is in the room towards Larry feeling like that because it’s truly insane how important his and other players from his generations’ work is to what’s going on today Especially in the players’ scene weather it’s drums or guitar or bass or whatever and I just think about it a lot nowadays and I love that it came up
