This really is an accurate breakdown of each note in the Panama solo. I've been playing it for years, incorrectly I might add. I decided to buckle down and go over this, for what seems like a thousand times. I think I'm getting the cadence a little better now that I've slowed it down to work on it. Thanks for a great demo and lesson PDX Guitar Freak!

It took me a bit to learn back in the day. There's a "feel" to it i didnt grasp. Went back after a week off and boom. I always revisit tunes as i get better. I like how you break down/slow down the solo in sections. 👍

Thanks Mike! Yeah the "feel" to Ed's solos is always a bit tricky. It always gave me trouble back in the day too, and honestly still to this day a lot of his stuff challenges me... I've just found that slowing the solo down and learning the phrasing at roughly 50-75% helps me a lot. :)

This is an excellent breakdown of the Panama solo. The attention to detail is very helpful. Awesome video. I'm working through learning it by using the Ultimate Guitar tab, and the mechanical audio that the app produces does not enable me to learn how to do it justice. This is a great supplement for working on the finishing touches.

Great lesson thank you very much. I have been playing the song for several years and I’m always still finding new little nuances. I have one question for you, in the intro after the C# minor the first time he drops down to the A he hits a false harmonic. I have tried it on the fifth string 2 fret, 3 and a few other places. I usually end up doing it on the fifth string C, but I was wondering what you have come up with? Thank you again for the awesome video.

When I do the 2 1/2 step dive bomb on the 3rd string 9th fret I sometimes hit the harmonic slightly and it actually sounds more like the album version. Not a full harmonic but a slight harmonic. I’m sure there’s a name and remember seeing it somewhere. I have the Hal Leonard tab book and it says to go on the 3rd string 9 to 11 1 & 1/2 dive which doesn’t allow for the harmonic and it’s just lazy lol. I love your tabs and I really hope you could tab D.O.A by Van Halen and Eruption someday. Yes Eruption is cliché but I feel like no one does it properly and everything you’ve done is spot on. Ice Cream Man would’ve been impossible without you. Thank you again.
@VanHalenIsolated
@VanHalenIsolated 2 жыл бұрын
I totally forgot too…I thought it was just classic brown sound from the amp on the last part, which partially it is, but after you do the harmonic bend on the 3rd string 7th fret then 7 on the 4th, and the 9, 8, 7 following, if you pluck those four notes with your fingers like a pinch harmonic you can achieve the tone of that part brown sound style. Actually, he does that a lot like in “You Really Got Me” fills in the verses which he is actually doing some partial pinch harmonics-as well as D.O.A fills, the first part of Eruption before the dive bomb on the 4th and 5th string, and I’m sure many others. Plucking with fingers :)

I am playing an apocalypse by schecter. It doesn't seem to sustain notes nearly as well as your guitar when tapping it kind of fizzles out. I just been playing for about a year trying to tackle this. Does yours have a sustainer or just special pickups to make that happen?

If you listen to the isolated guitar track from the studio version of Panama, it is insane how fast he does that fast part. It's almost like he is doing something a little differently (skipping notes or something) that makes it go faster?
@jordanrussell-howard9491
@jordanrussell-howard9491 11 ай бұрын
I believe he's using "hammers on from nowhere" where he'll sound the note without actually picking it, just by slamming his finger against the string. Obviously there's some picking, too, though. It's cool because Ed played in a which was unique but also practical! There's a dude who goes by "garbeaj" on this site who's got a transcription of this solo, which is pretty damn accurate.

@@jordanrussell-howard9491I think I'm going to have to resort to that. Been working on that part for weeks (finally decided to take solos) and I'm stuck at about 75% his speed if I'm lucky. Right hand can't keep up with the left.

Yes, I can’t deal with the part just after the repeating Chuck Berry style bends with my pinky. My hands aren’t that big but I prefer not using my pinky for this to get more speed that’s just crucial. That part of the solo has tortured me for years.

But for those of us that have Floyd Rose or spring-loaded whammies a standard tuned lesson would be greatly appreciated, because in reality if you are playing this song out you would probably never tune down a half step.
