Shawn was such a beast. As a kid, I was a total metal head. Then a friend of mine gave me three CDs. Powers Of Ten, MVP Gambale & Holdsworth, and Elegant Gypsy. I was floored by all of it, but Powers Of Ten was beyond mind boggling. Like music from a different dimension, some sort of alien musical genius. I couldn't believe anybody could play that fast and clean. I asked my buddy if Shawn was for real, or if he tracked that stuff and sped it up. He assured me Shawn was the real deal, and brought over this video. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, and hearing. Shawn wasn't just a technical genius, he was a musical genius. He pushed the guitar further than anyone before him, or after him. I often wonder what musical wonders he would have given us if he had not left us so early. R.I.P. Shawn.

In fact, in my humble opinion Shawn Lane is not the most skilled guitar player ever. I mean, being fast in some patterns, repetitive and symetrical stuff is nothing to do with being the most Skilled in the guitar. What i see in Lane is a lack of creatiivity in his solos, if you listen one, you listen them all. That is because is very repetitive in his lines, a lot of 3 note per string. And the speed he got there is a lot of players who can reach it in a certain point on a solo. I give you some examples: John Petrucci in long track on first album by Liquid Tension Experiment. Petrucci gets crazy fast by combining 3 note per string and another note in other string. And he do it a lot in a lot os songs. Another one is Chris Impellitteri en his Speed Soloing video, Francesco Fareri and Rusty Cooley too. But there are still not the most skilled players ever who can make runs with difficult patterns in all the neck. Shawn Lane even not Sweep, how can be the mos skilled Player without making some good Sweeping stuff? The most skilled player ever in my opinion is Jason Becker. That guy was crazy in every aspect in the guitar, complete in all senses. Just watch Paganini caprice #5 version of Jason Becker and it's just tremendous. The is a momment where Becker gets 22 notes per second. And he is not just making normal runs and stuff, he is playing difficult patterns and shapes, stretch fingers, his fingers looks like a Giant Spider to me. Jason Becker is the god of the Arpeggios ( Sorry Frank ) Is the most gifted player ever, at age 16-17 was playing for Cacophony and creating SMS an album that is like the bible of shred. And when he was 18-19 make a solo album Perpetuak Burn that is a very challenging album in all senses, but not only for the skills and patterns, but is because the music, the feeling, this guy was in another planet. If Jasin could still play in these days he will be toying with all guitar players around the world. Just imagine, he is still composing, and there is not a single player right now after 30 years able to compose a sweep picking stuff better than Serrana Arpeggios of Becker. Marty Friendman said someday: Jason Becker minds in music and imagination is at the level of Mozart. You need to listen all his work to understand what i have just say. Unreleased demos, auditions for David Lee Roth, tje clinic in Atlanta, Cacophony stuff, rare videos, the greatest of all time. Cheers.
@ricomajestic
@ricomajestic 6 жыл бұрын
Jason Becker was no Mozart! Good player but the guy never wrote anything memorable! Sweep picking is the most boring technique and it always sounds like the player is playing an exercise.
@UltimateJgx
@UltimateJgx 6 жыл бұрын
ricomajestic It depends in your perception. I can say that playing repetitive patterns 3 notrs per string more than 5 seconds is bored too. Jason Becker wrote memorable stuff, Altitudes is not memorable being 18 years old? Air? And a lot of good solos for Cacophony. Being awarded "The best guitar player in the world in 1990" by Guitar magazine at 20 years old. Now just imagine what he will be doing now? And now he can not even play and he is still making music. That is not a genius? In fact, search the word Child Prodigy in Wikypedia and Jason Becker appears as long Mozart and others. ¿Sweep picking is bored? Well, then all classical pianist who played Arpeggios were bored too? Franz liszt? Chopin? Paganini? There is a sweep player in these days that is called Luca Turilli, he is Italian, was athe creator of Rhapsody band and his Arpeggios are very good, not random stuff like a lot of guitar players that only sweep without an intention an melodic, but his arpeggios are very melodic and sounds very good with a classical feel in order to achieve the mistycal feel in his fantasy compositions. And Serrana Arpeggios of Becker is a very nice tune to be honest, and it is fast as hell. Just imagine to compose that note by note? By the way, in the second session of the Atlanta Clinic in 1989 by Jason Becker in the second part he plays a lot of Blues stuff, he was moving in that style and combining his shred and skills with Blues it was just amazing. Becker was in another level. Search it, that clinic in youtube, it is only audio because it was never recorded. Do not confuse with the DVD Atlanta Clinic, that was recorded in video. I mean the second session. Cheers.

@bodd boward I don't think he was a strong mutter where you mute strings that aren't being played no. But a lot of jazz players don't. He Shawn liked an arch top where he could turn over his picking hand more and that lacks muting of the palm. I'm not saying it wrong. A lot of people play without proper muting. So, the one thing I notice with Shawn besides everything else amazing is the space between his first and second finger is literally that of a fret and when stretching even more. So the first and second finger basically form half of a fulcrum with his pinky like a manic, high speed, espresso driven teeter totter. It's a thing of beauty. Then he's doing high speed tremelo picking in conjunction to perform scalar runs. He was amazing.

I mastered example 2 and it only took me 2 YEARS, mostly figuring out the picking technique. Whenever i play that lick to my friends, make their jaws drop. Does worth it? Hell yeah.

Agree this causes me as much pain as it does enjoyment. He's affected so many of us and its a damn shame he's gone. A really incredible player, tone, unearthly chops and so ahead of everything. I miss him all the time and put these clips on to kick my ass. RIP bud.

Just discovered Shawn Lane. Amazing. Funny thing is he looks like he has small hands but can pull off those huge stretches at unbelievable speed. How does he do it?which is encouraging to me as we tend to think players with long fingers and large hands have a physical advantage he proves that not to be the case
@johnmcminn9455

probably has something to do with stretching the hand span for piano as a child. kind of like how children, male or female can do ballistic stretching for splits as children and achieve elasticity,where as past a certain age, no way. also some people may have dynamic dexterity as a gift. I personally am amazed at Shawn's 2 note per string pentatonics utilizing 3 and 4s 5s and 3s , 3s and sixes. that alone is valuable, to work out picking for those sequences. Eric Johnson does that as well, where as many of his licks don't require stretching, but many players will do sequences of 5s, with a 3 note per string fretting technique. In this video, Shawn shows it is not necessarily the rule I personally stay away from wide stretching, I used to do it, but it seems almost anything can be played with out wide stretches
