You, my man, are one of the best if not the best Van Halen instructors on the net. I am impressed with the way you break the solo down into sections, how you pick up the notes meticulously yourself and your overall dedication to guitar. Thanks a heap. Subscribed

Bro, you have no idea how much I've enjoyed your very thorough lessons on un-arguabley the most difficult guitarist to comprehend. You have totally de-mystified Halen's work. You're like Moses coming down the mountain with commandments from Edward V. Halen. Thank you and just know that you've made a big impact on me. I finally have the confidence to attack Ed's work.

after a week of playing this over and over, I decided to listen to how Eddie played this live. Very reassuring to learn that he glosses over all the stuff I find really hard about this solo --- particularly the last half! :)

yessssssssss! thank you a billion times. That weird part that you mentioned is awesome! I love how it's the same playing pattern that would normally be on strings 1 - 3 moved to strings 2 - 4. Still all notes in the key of Am blues but you get different notes with the same pattern. such a brilliant genius.

My absolute favorite VH song. This one has it all. This might be the perfect guitar song. It has that attitude, the "sound", the amazing solo and the pre solo which is fucking wicked. This is a biased opinion of course, but the song just has so many bad ass elements to it that it hard to deny that claim. Once again EVH is and always will be the king of guitar bar none!! Always love your vids man. Cheers @@

Hey thanks man, and I totally agree... I love every part of the song. It's proof you don't need to tune your guitar down super low and play Slayer inspired riffs to sound bad ass. It's all in the attitude and the groove. Classic =VH= just can't be beat! :)

Great lesson. How I wish I had software to slow solos down back in my day. There were no lessons like this because no KZfaq... all I knew to do was lift the needle from the record and keep trying to set it down in the same place until I got it right

Thanks for all of these lessons. Two solos I'm struggling, well one in particular and haven't given the other much chance, is House of Pain; Girl Gone Bad is the other that I haven't REALLY looked at the tabs but when I did they looked similar to House of Pain in terms of difficulty. Thank you :) OH! And the beggining of Mean Street. If you can do a proper lesson on that one, you'd be the number one Van Halen virtuoso on KZfaq seeing as no one that I'm aware of has done it properly.

Hey bro, thank you for the nice comment. As for the tone, I'm not sure what advice to give other than... 1) don't use too much distortion.. finding the right balance is important; 2) use it a little bit of phaser for the classic early EVH coloring (in front of the amp).

Me too! There are a lot of videos out there attempting to teach a thing, and I can tell by listening to them that what they're trying to do is pretty far off. So I really REALLY appreciate the folks that do it right. Also, great video production. Great tutorial as usual. Are you playing the EVH Striped series guitar? If so, would you recommend it over the 5150 model with the Kramer headstock? I want to pick one up, just not sure which is the better guitar.
@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks bro. As for those two guitars, I'm not sure which to recommend. I have not played the 5150 version, but I believe the neck may be different. I actually sold my EVH Striped recently, to make room for another guitar. There was nothing wrong with it though... I just made a commitment to my wife that I wouldn't buy any more guitars unless I sold one first LOL. I absolutely love the Wolfgang pickups too.. I still have them on two other guitars.

Hey Freak, if Mean Street is ‘medium-difficulty’, in your estimation, what are the most difficult VH solos to learn? I’m looking for a stretch (pun intended) to get me playing better.

I've been listening to this song alot lately and I need help from you musicians out there! While the song is in 4/4 time... listen closely to EVH's rhythm track during the solo at 2 min 24 secs (panned left)... I swear he is playing in 9/8 time while the bass/drums/solo are still in 4/4. Can somebody confirm this for me?

I dont think 0:10 coming out of the sweep is right. Im hearing B-G-B-G ....basically steapping back to one of the notes you just swept across. - Ive listened to studio verion about 25 times or more, listened & watched this video many times, aside from THAT particular detail, you have the entire lead Pegged dead on & its highly impressive.

Mixolydian dude.
@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak 5 жыл бұрын
Hey man, you must be referring to Section 3. The note choices (except that 18th fret note) do all fit within the Mixolydian scale so I can see what you are saying. I obviously ended up just saying A Dorian plus the major third... it's been so long since I did this lesson, but I'm thinking the rationale was the the rhythm notes underneath were more minor scale appropriate. Either way, thanks for mentioning that. In the end, I'm sure Eddie would say to us both "what are you talking about?" :)
@squidface4381
@squidface4381 5 жыл бұрын
@@PDXguitarfreak Paul Gilbert refers to the scale in question as mixolydian #9. The very last lick is a great example of it, with the C moving up to C#. You hear it a lot in country/bluegrass music as well as boogie-woogie style riffs like Pride and Joy and even Daytripper. Great job on the solo and vid, keep 'em coming.

Ed doesn’t read the tab and he really doesn’t play his own recorded solos when he plays live anyway. I don’t think he even knows the Unchained solo, every time he played it live, he was always off time or winging it. He never could get the timing right lol. I really think that these solos that he recorded were pieced together for the album and he lied about doing them in single takes. He even said in an interview that most of the early albums had no overdubs, I have to laugh at that one, every song on every album he’s ever done has overdubs. I love classic VH and EVH is still my favorite rock guitarist but he lies a lot. Even this Meanstreet solo was pieced together in sections just like you are teaching here, in segments and EVH couldn’t play it exact when he played live. Now, I think EVH is feeling the competition of all demand for musicians to sound like the record when they play live and he is playing Meanstreet more correct than he ever did, then again, he still can’t get Unchained right lol. I like your interpretations though , and your way of putting the tab up on the screen. I already know most of the VH catalog but I like to see other guitarists interpretations because they might find things that I overlooked and missed. Very nicely done.

His use of outside notes is so killer and I’ve never heard anybody and modern music do it like that. Especially because it comes to naturally for him and sounds off the cuff which shows that the guitar is merely an extension of what he hears in his head. Forgot to mention incredible lesson nailing every single note. When I became more experienced nothing bothered me more pre-Internet than buying tabletsure knowing it was probably wrong. This of course was true with certain guitar players like Van Halen and quite a bit of Hendrix stuff who have very familiar yet totally unorthodox and Inimitable styles as far as trying to play like them without actually playing one of their tunes. With Hendrix it’s a little bit easier than hail and it’s virtually impossible unless you want to just capture some clichés
@tpap6827
@tpap6827 Жыл бұрын
The coolest thing about Van Halen is solos like this one and the solo off so this is love as well as the solo in Panama and the Outro solo drop dead legs are ones Where Ed does not elect to use many tapping lines except for those tasteful taps he does off a bent note, As well as the fact that every time Van Halen is doing a crazy bend he’s never pulling up on the bar because his bar was bolted to the wood Versus a floating bar such that you can only push the bar down. These little subtle aspects of his playing would make him so original. His monster bends and his fluid legato are often confused with some of the parlor tricks which tapping in solos and bar abuse can often be considered by lesser players. The thing is that when he does tap wicked stuff like Spanish fly people can’t touch it. That’s why I really don’t like Most players tapping interpretations of Van Halen solos because a lot of time they just sound like tapped arpeggios that are obvious. For example Randy Rhodes tapping in solos never impressed me at all Because it was never off the cuff and always seemed like some classical étude using Tapping is a sort of a look at me doing this trick. It would be much cooler if he simply played the arpeggios on different strings when going for those very arranged sounding solos. If you’re gonna tap arpeggios in solos that are very predictable it just sounds kind of corny despite the fact that he’s a great players too
