Another cool thing to do in this scale, and what Jerry does a lot, is bend up to the 6th of the scale from a half step down. Classic Django Reinhardt and I can imagine Jerry picked up on it from listening to him back in the day. You can hear it at 9:09

One thing often neglected in Garcia's bag is the immense vocabulary of Garcia. He could play scales for several moments, get poetic, and then rip a crystal snap of a lick that would make your mind go "Ah!" or even "Ah-Ha!" He was a walking encyclopedia of music, and his guitar playing was very philosophical. He made it all sound like the music was making sense. Listen to the SBD of the song Built to Last from March 26, 1990 at the Knickerbocker Arena. He used some voice leading, chord melodies, incredible comping during the vocals, while singing, a guitar solo that includes both built in riffs, and room for improv (in this case, hardly a measure), and awesome interplay between every member of the band (it's as though they were all hearing the music in the exact same way and on the same level of sophistication). I'd love to see you analyze the unspoken aspects of Garcia's playing.

not to get too deep, but A mixolydian is all the same notes as the key of D major. what really makes it sound mixolydian is A to G, the chords of D major are D,Emin,F#min,G, A, Bmin, and C#min7b5, what makes that A mixo, is using the A as the tonal center instead of D.

Something that I recently learned that is with standard tuning, the three note per string for the Major scale is the same pattern no matter what root note you choose. Coincidentally, all of the modes that follow the Major scale are also all the same patterns. The modes go as follows: You have your root note, say G for example. G Major - G, A, B, C, D, E, F# 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 - G Major 2 - A Dorian 3 - B Phrygian 4 - C Lydian 5 - D Mixolydian 6 - E Aeolian 7 - F# Locrian

if you wanna play like jerry.. learn the scales... alot o mixolydian. listening to a certain song and hitting play and pause after a riff that you like. really listen and try to hear every note an re immolate it with your own style. thats how i found my jerry tone.. stop and go!. less is always more!

Suggestion for you - learn Pentatonic Minor in A (Major if you like Country). Focus on that. When you go up the scale, say to yourself the position on the scale. Like this: Root-flat 3rd-fourth-fifth-seventh-root. I found this helpful because the key doesn't matter too much, just where you are on the scale. Other types of scales will add and subtract a few notes from here. For instance the blues scale just adds a flat 5th position. If you know where the 4 and 5, you can drop in between

The short answer is that modes are really the same scale with different Root notes. The different central point presents a different feel. The Chords D, G and A place us most naturally in the D major/Ionian key. between the 3 chords all the notes of the scale are used (D, F#, A , G ,B , C#, E). D ionian=E Dorian=F# Phrygian=G Lydian=A Mixolydian=B aeolian=C# locrian in terms of notes. only the root changes. Mixo fits well with the V. the only 7 in a regular scale is V7 so it also goes with any 7

ionian(Major), Dorian, Lydian, phyrrian, mixolydian, eolian(minor)and locryan are all the same shape that is : whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step and a half step: Those are the modes of the diatonic major scale. D major are the same notes as A mixolydian, C Locrian,B minor etc they depending on the note they resolve around the scale will sound major/mix etc etc. Try playing the scale with an A or D chord ringing on the background and you wil hear the difference

A mixolydian uses the same notes as D major but you start and end on A in lieu of D so you change the emphasis of where the tonic is

Yes, both scales have the same notes, but i'd recommend that if you're playing A mixolydian don't think about D Ionian (major). Think about the notes from A mixolydian: A B C# D E F# G. That Way you'll get used to playing A mixolydian. I hope that helped.

A Strat is a 25.5 inch scale (distance from nut to bridge), while the Les Paul is 24.75 inches. The Les Paul will have less tension on the strings than the Strat. That is a major difference

For anyone just learning patterns, I think it's very useful to number your fingers. 1-4.

There's a lot of differences compared to what that other guy said. Les Pauls use Humbuckers which have a fatter sound and since they are usually made of mahogany wood they have a warmer sound. Different neck feel too. If you listen to a lot of hard/classic rock then it should suit you a lot more.

I think people find the idea of modes daunting but you're just playing in B minor/D major and it's the fancy name that frightens people off. Knowing how to work backwards down the neck till you find the major or minor scales most people know is the key to reaching these alternative neck phrasing positions.

I think its finally hit me that I need to learn the major scale all over the fretboard. Everything seems to be just little changes from it.

So let me see if I have this right. This prog can be thought of in the key of D. The mixo mode is the 5th mode, we use A as the root.Since the mixo mode has a flat 7 the scale now shares the same key signature as it's parent, D. (G# of A major scale is flatted becoming G in the A Mixo Scale). By the same logic we can then also use (if the context of the piece allows, with regards to the sounds we are looking for): E dor, F# phryg, G lyd, B aeol, and C# locr scales over the key of D. Correct?
