Emppu made guitar solo as his own and Nightwish style, but yet respecting the feel of the original. I respect that. Like many have said, not a cover, but a tribute.

Marko was the sole bass player, but also played electro-acoustic guitar on many Nighwish songs. Emppu plays electric guitar and only that nowadays. (He played acoustic guitar, too, in the 1990s, before Marko joined.) BTW, despite being mostly bassist and singer in Nighwish, Marko's formal music education was on classical guitar. If you check Islander live in Tampere or similar you can see that he indeed is very proficient in guitar, too. That song demonstrates wide range of ways to play acoustic guitar.

This concert was Tarja's last performance, but this was just the four guys -- each showcasing what they do best: Marco CAN SING, Jukka is a great drummer, Emppu is a great guitarrist, and Tuomas -- both orchestrating and playing this - great. They didn't need Floor or Tarja: this was Marco's song. I like the fact that we got to see Emppu and Jukka doing so much. Without a woman vocalist getting all the camera time we got to *see* more of the band's skills.

I guess you could say it was Floor-less performance :) I love this tribute ... as a long-time Floyd fan I have to say that for me this version is on par with the original. No-one can match Dave Gilmour for feel on the guitar, but Empu does a fine job of "Nightwishing" the lead breaks without disrespecting the original. Marko's vocals are stunning.

This is from the year 2005 (Hartwall Arena Helsinki, End of an Era, Tarja's era). Marko is a bassist and singer. Emppu is the guitarist. Both of them did an excellent work there. Wonderful tribute it is. I'm so long time fan of Pink Floyd that i remember their "real" heyday at the 70's. This song is not a "classic" in that perspective and so more "open" to new interpretations and Nightwish did it excellent. ⛄👍

They did, however, play it 44 times before this on that tour. It was in setlist to give Tarja a break and time for costume change. In later tours they have had their own songs for that purpose, like the Islander and While Your Lips Are Still Red, but those didn't exist at this point.

@@akaalexanderking You'll find multiple videos for Wings of Darkness - the song was Tarot's first single back in 1986, then they did a remake of their first album in 2011 for their 25th anniversary; they'd had some lineup changes since the original and the music reflects this. I personally prefer the 1986 version, but I like to suggest for people to check out both versions. It's fun seeing 20-year-old beardless Marko all glammed up hair-band style, but the banter between band members in the 2011 video is pretty funny, too.

Dear Mr. GuitarGent, wonderful commentary, thoughtful and knowledgeable. Emppu surely knows that trying to out-Gilmour Gilmour would be the height of folly: what he chose to do in the solo was in my opinion a mature and well thought of translation to his style and technique.

This is one of the best covers of a fantastic song and is from when Tarja was the lead vocalist (likely this was her changing song). Marco made this his own vocally as did Emppu on guitar and it had that clear Nightwish tone throughout. This song shows just how serious a loss Marco is to the band, not only for his masterful bass playing but also his vocals which could carry this band even without a female lead vocalist. Of course when you mix in Floor it become even more awesome and her and Marco are a fantastic duo that never seems to step on one another no matter how the song is performed.

I think you should react to "The poet and pendulum" live in Wembley and "The greatest show on Earth" live in Tempere. They are the two greatest songs composed by Thomas (the guy on the keyboard) who composes all Nightwish songs. They are long songs (around 14 and 20 minutes). You might want to do some research on the lyrics before listen. In one Thomas commited suicide in the song in order to don't do it um real life meanwhile he was fighting depression after they fired the first vocalist and the fans were blaming him. The other is inspired by Prof. Richard Dawkins and is basically about the evolution of Planet Earth, since the formation until now.

Even David Gilmour considered this Nightwish version the best cover of this song he ever heard. Timewise, this performance was recorded while Tarja was changing outfits in the last concert she would ever do with Nightwish; at the end she was presented with a letter signed by all four other members of the band telling her she and the band would part ways. Not quite sure if it was related to knowing this was in store for Tarja, Jukka - the drummer - alledgedly was suffering from a heavy bout of migraine during this entire concert. Seeing how he was slumbing over his drum kit holding his head during the rests I tend to believe it, which makes his performance incredible.

As a guitar player you definitely need to check Wintersun. Both of their guitarists are phenomenal. Most NW fans suggest "Sons Of Winter And Stars" as it showcases NW current drummer perhaps little bit better, but I would say that you want to start with "Time" or "Winter Madness". Latter has probably the hardest guitar solo ever composed. It is originally played by Jari the singer, but as he has focused for singing, the other guitarist Teemu plays it now. Teemu is arguably even better player, and he has absolutely perfect picking technique. This live version Jari still plays it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l85oqcp6tKnJXZc.html There is also a video where Teemu explains some of their riffs and shows how that solo is played. A strong recommendation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lb9ylKiqua-zmWg.html Then again I will suggest that you check out other incredible Finnish guitar player, Matias Kupiainen (Stratovarius). Here is his awesome performance from Finnish guitar heroes 2007, where he plays medley of Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, John Petrucci etc, and this was when basically no one knew him yet: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNJkaNujrZnOXac.html

Keep in mind the drummer had a huge migrain during this concert (that's why Tuomas made that signal to Empu to check on him, nodding his head towards Yuka, the drummer. Also Marko was feeling sick that day and...on top of that they new this would be the last concert with their first singer Tarja (who was not aware yet, she told them a lot she wanted to leave and this was the night the guys would tell her this was it) So playing a concert under this stress and playing a tribute to Pink Floyd (they did not wanted to copy 1 on 1 because they admire Pink Floyd too much)

I appreciate you doing a video for this fantastic cover/tribute. Pink Floyd was my first concert in May of 1994 at Ohio State Stadium. That show had a profound impact on me, and it's what really made me get myself in gear musically and start learning and practicing. It was so powerful yet beautiful and haunting and on such a massive scale. It was a bit eerie when they played "High Hopes" because it was really dark at the beginning, and all we heard was the bell. Plus my brothers and I weren't too familiar with the new album at the time. As for this video, I can't see what my other commenters have said for some reason, but this was from the "End of an Era" concert. It was the last concert for Tarja, the original vocalist, as the guys fired her via open letter after the show. Nonetheless, the show is fantastic despite some questionable choices from the cinematography department (too many rapid zooms and too much slow motion). It holds a lot of nostalgia for me as I became a fan right after "Century Child" was released and I saw the video for "Bless the Child." Marko's incredible bass tone in that song is what made me ditch my Peavey Foundation 5 and eventually go with Warwick. I don't know if you've got your videos for this week's theme already lined up, but if not, I recommend LOVEBITES' cover of Helloween's "Eagle Fly Free" from their studio (or a studio - not sure if it's theirs). I grew up on Pink Floyd. My oldest brother is a guitarist, and he played Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd all the time. I was introduced to so many classic rock bands and artists through him. When I bought my first bass guitar, before I learned anything else, he taught me "Money"and "Wish You Were Here" because he wanted someone to play those two songs with. "One of These Days," another song where Gilmour plays both a slide guitar and a guitar with a slide (as you probably know), was the inspiration for me buying digital delay pedals. Heck, they're the main reason I so heavily gravitate toward effects pedals in general for both guitar and bass guitar. Speaking of LOVEBITES, my birthday was this past Sunday. My wonderful wife did end up getting a Zemaitis MFG24 for me ("It's pretty!" and "You have one guitar but two basses. You were all out of balance!" where her reasons), but she also bought LOVEBITES' three studio albums, two of which have live show DVDs as a second disc, two of their EPs, and their only single so far, "Golden Destination." I tweeted a picture to the five ladies and got a like from Midori and Asami which was nice.

Wacken 2013 is great but End of an Era 2005 is awesome...this concert. Most emotional NW concert ever and probably will be forever. Emppu...please, give me one of those signature ESP EV1 guitars ...they sound so fine and I think you have them plenty. Maybe you are new reactor of NW...but maybe you know that they developed their style, created their scope, pioneered the genre, made plenty of albums and have been famous and known in the whole world much before Floor knew anything about this band. She joined when everything was ready and table set. Yes...she did great performances since then but take that history in consideration and longer perspective in your analysis later on. A female singer is totally replaceable in NW but keyboard player is not. And this PF Tribute has been tuned by Tuomas for Marco who is so great singer too and much more difficult to replace than female singer. Let's see who he will be...

Love Floyd, but I think that Nightwish does a wonderful tribute version. keeping it just enough Floydlike, but giving it a little Nightwish vibe. I don't think Emppu is a slide player. The last great slide players where from the 70's. Duane Allman, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes, Johnny Winter, Rory Gallagher, Rod Price. These were the greats. Gilmour, Blackmore , and many others used slide or lap to produce some beautiful and emotional melodies and are two of my favorites of all time. However, the true greats are long gone and some younger player have filled their shoes like Jeff Healy (R,I,P,) and Sonny Landreth. Usually slide is used for Southern Rock and Blues music. Although I do love when it is used for beautiful and tasty solo work. Some of the country guys are pretty amazing as well. You don't hear slide in metal music these days unless it is used to create an effect.
@akaalexanderking

Absolutely true, those were the great names of the slide. It is a very specific sound, but given the amount of experimentation going on these days I wouldn't be surprised to see it pop back up in metal soon enough

Not that one or the other is better, its just funny to see/hear the differences between recording-techniques and -equipement. (tbf thats the one thing i never liked bout PF, imho it sounds too flat for what it is)

What about a female fronted band from Germany wich has stylistic influences from Korn, Slipknot and In This Moment? --> Null Positiv Their highly charismatic, energetic and powerful singer Elli Berlin has a large range from clean over harsh vocals up (or better down) to growls. Her voice is really unique in a very positive way. A band that is definitely worth to be reacted to 🤘 I love their power ballad „Wo Rauch ist, ist auch Feuer“ (incl. English caption) which such an intense atmosphere. Ellis voice and charisma is just awesome: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orV5rJCam8nDmX0.html Anther good start to get to know them is also „Freiheit“ (Freedom), which has English subtitles: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a62RpM51mNCucmw.html Their song „Friss Dich auf“ is pure heaviness and has a creepy video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jJxzfZOD1p7Xiok.html Hass” (Hate“ Yes, it is as heavy as you can guess by the title)

this is great, but on other word to Nightwish reactions.... Wembley, Buones Aires and Tampere are at least as good if not better than Wacken.... most ppl only want Wacken because the dont know they others... I would suggest that you sometimes react to Shudder before the Beautiful from Wembley..... there you also have nice guitar work and its an absolute powerful song and the opener.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdWBa9Z_uL-8nYU.html

We like your reactions videos. Please react to Yavuz Cetin. Our best electric guitarist ever. Yavuz Cetin, one of the rock legends of Turkey, committed suicide in 2001 when he was only 31 years old. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p6iZhpeUp6uWj5c.html Thanks.

I’m not a fan of bands who cover Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd, because I think it’s a big NO NO. But . . . . . I have to admit, I’ll make an exception for this version of *_High Hopes_* of Pink Floyd by Nightwish. But basicly it’s no cover but a tribute. If you’re a Pink Floyd fan, you have to see/listen to.
