In this guitar speed lesson video, I’ll show you how to synchronize your 2 hands so that playing guitar fast becomes easier, cleaner and sounds better.
Here’s what I’ll cover in this lesson:
I’ll show you why your guitar speed becomes limited when your left and right hands are not perfectly synchronized and then I’ll show you how to fix this problem step by step.
Step 1: Become aware when your two hands are not in sync. Some people struggle to hear this, especially when playing guitar at high speed. I’ll show you how to know if your hands are out of sync when you are playing fast.
Step 2: I’ll show you how to identify the exact point where your 2-hand synchronization is breaking down. You cannot fix your synchronization problem and build fast speed on the guitar until and unless you know exactly where the hands are getting out of sync.
Step 3: Practice your speed licks just before the two-hand sync breakdown.
Step 4: Accent the specific notes that are not in sync. (some notes you play will be in sync while others won’t be).
Step 5: Accent every beat! If you’re playing a series of 16th notes (for example), accent the first of each group of 4 notes. Playing with a metronome helps.
Step 6: Forget about what perfect playing sounds like and instead learn to focus on what it FEELS like when your hands are perfectly in sync and when they are not.
Step 7: AFTER you memorize what perfect 2 hand sync feels like, it’s time to really memorize what it sounds like.

Love this. I’m a bassist but this is so applicable. I’m a bassist that plays with three of the fingers on my right hand too. Life is a work in progress.

This hand synchronization has really helped with my speed progress. I'm still having some issues with string skipping, but I'm sure I'll get it....!!! After all, repetition is the mother of success 😅 Thank you Tom...!!!

Excellent video! I love how detailed your instruction is. Success is in the details. Especially when it comes to such an important topic like 2 hand sync. I especially like how you discussed what it feels like to be in sync and accenting beats. Very, very helpful. Thanks Tom Hess!

Hi, a good video. This is how I have somewhat practised this 2 hand sync. Maybe I have practised it too much without metronome. So I will from now on use always metronome and try to find the exact point where it breaks down and then practise speed just below that. I have made mistake of trying practise this too fast many times. I have also found that if I find point on some exercise where sync always breaks down it good to isolate those notes and practise those notes really slow and faster a longer time to tackle that problem area. I have noticed that in many excercises there is always one or two critial points which always might cause sync to break down.

Trick is to calm down after the rapid opening bar or so. Relax that picking wrist like coming to a stop at a red light.

I’ve been playing guitar for about 25 years and I’m good but when I take your advice and apply it to my playing,,, it dramatically improves. Some thing I’ve always felt strongly is the muscle memory. I’ve heard one player tell people to forget about muscle memory and that it’s really not all that important and I had to call him out on it because nothing could be farther from the truth. I told him that,,, if you ignore the development of muscle memory and not giving it any focus, then you will never know how it feels to play correctly as opposed to playing incorrectly and it’s absolutely impossible to grow, develop and progress as a player because if you don’t give it it’s place as one the absolute most important aspects of development and progress, then you’re just sabotaging your growth and progress because you will never know how it “feels” to play it correctly. So, how it sounds and feels when it’s done right is the way to grow , develop and progress as these methods and and principles when applied deliver the RIGHT results that CLEARLY speak for themselves, always making more and more progress if your will to put in the effort and doing what ever it takes🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

I would maybe add there still one step what was also discussed in video, step 8. Isolate possible problem area of notes which always causes out of synch problem and find out what is there the reason what causes that out of synch problem. It might be for example directional picking breaking down, wrong direction of picking movement, some string skipping, wrong kind on technique in some transition of notes. These kind of exercises also exposes your problems in technique if you drop out of synch. Then its also good to find correct technique or repair wrong picking direction or whatever might be the reason to get it broken.

Good advice, will give it a go! Personally I think the demonstration would be better without guitar effects. Clean tone without reverb/delay/overdrive would let you listen to the singular notes/attack.

Very good, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The main thing to focus on is the principle of finding your 2-hand sync threshold, playing just below it (but not too far below) and then trying to push through it, while keeping your hands in sync.

Your'e obviously a great player and technician, but how can you teach a sync technique with delay all over your sound? And the other guy is totally dry? I know it's hard to sound tight if you're out of time with your delay... but you are drenched in it. Counterintuitive to me.

You make a good point - you don't want to practice synchronization with delay or effects (but that is the sound I use for playing). The main thing to focus on is the principle of finding your 2-hand sync threshold, playing just below it (but not too far below) and then trying to push through it, while keeping your hands in sync.
