@@MrGul You are right, technically I CAN get the sizes if I: Get a custom set, mix and match packs or buy individual strings but that gets either extremely pricey for no reason or there’s left over strings in a gauge I’ll never use. The difference with the Dadario X strings and the elixir is the way they coat the strings. Elixir make the wound strings - then coat them Dadario make the wound strings from two wires that are pre coated. Then one is wrapped around the other. I agree with you - it makes a big difference. I stopped using Ernie ball strings in my workshop when they went thru a phase of the top E's breaking whilst stretching in. I then went to Dadario and I recommend those now. It is worth mentioning Rotosound give you an extra top E - generally you will need it :)

Having 20 guitars, Elixir Nanoweb for me. In addition to them lasting longer (especially the plain strings!), I've grown accustomed to the slippery feel the coating provides. Thats also a double edged sword for me: any normal, non coated strings feel more or less like playing on sandpaper. Also, I went to check from Thomann, and the XT's are the same price as Elixirs (Elixir 10-46 is 11,90€, XT 10-46 also 11,90€).

I tried both ; as I sweat like pig on stage, I always use coated strings. I have to say, The daddario last longer overall, but the elixir keep their "brillance" longer. Also, with the elixir nano and polyweb, you get a certain smouthness under the finger that I personaly really love. About the peeling, it's a problem only with the polyweb ones. Ive been using ernie balls for 15+ years. Decided to swap all my guitars and basses to Daddario after trying one set and liking them. I'm primarily a bass player, and on all my basses the tension was higher than the EBs, but i was able to get the action way lower with them and i the perceived tension changed drastically and i loved them. The lower action and slightly higher tension i can really dig in without any rattle yet they are still easy to play, i dont get that bridge cable feeling with some other strings which is why i kept using EB for so many years.

I like this format if you revisit it i would like you to try out the reverend willy strings in .07 gauge they're pretty fun (though I think Dunlop makes them) I'm also partial to the .08 super slinky's in the pink wrapper. I like elixirs on acoustics, but i get why people are wigged by the coating peel. I also use fingerease fretboard conditioner which gives the strings a light coating and increases the playability while cutting down the string talk on the coil wrapped strings. That fretboard conditioner really helps because I haven't restrung my shit in a long time like a dirtbag.

@Jew Adolf 95% of the time D’Adarrio, but I like to check out other brands and I even give Ernie Balls a chance again every couple rotations to see it anything has changed. I am a fan of DR strings as well the Dimebag 11 set as well as some of their drop tune 6and 7 string tight-fit sets. For my 8 I use almost only D’Adario regular nyxl sets. The cheap ones not the $14 ones even though I experiment often and have used those too. Clear tone strings are good too as well as GHS. I want to look into a company that offers quality custom sets for my 7 & 8 string guitars because the gauge selection I am stuck with is usually way too thick and way too thin on the hybrid sets. They don’t set up right to me or the lowest string feels out of place in compared to the rest. I like a little slack for that snappy pong sound I love oh so much. I'm mostly using NYXLs, but I'd agree they are in the area of diminishing returns for the price. I mostly prefer them on extended range instruments, because the added brightness helps a bit (but you could also solve this with other means) and they are a bit stiffer than the normal daddarios, which I like. But if price does matter to you, just stick to the normal Daddarios or Ernie Balls.

Ghs boomers! Better than daddario and ernie ball. Used them for 10+ years. Always good, daddarios are dead out of the package like half the time i have setup a guitar with them... Ernie ball is good, but they feel different than ghs.

I typically use Ernie 9s on my strat. I find they last a good long time. Normally after a year or so I end up breaking a string which happened over the summer. My local music store didn't have any Ernie Ball 9s in stock so I bought a set of D'Addario strings. No problems with em right now. I'll still probably go back to Ernie Ball though once I break a string on these in the next year or so.

You should give Ernie Ball’s titanium coated strings a go. Have them on my non Floyd guitar (paradigms with the Floyd for strength) and they sound and feel better than any strings I’ve used before. Not tried D’addario XTs but would make for an interesting comparison

I use daddario jazz wound 3rd, BTBAM use them and I love having a thicker third string. I only used Dunlop a couple of times but from what I remember they didn't sound "new" after I put them on.

Do you think the XTs last as long as Elixir? Elixir kinda never dies on me. If don’t gig with the particular guitar with Elixirs on I sometimes don’t change them for months and they still sound bright and almost new. I bought a packet of XTs a few weeks ago, so I guess I’ll find out for myself soon enough anyway, haha. But I’m not in a hurry changing strings right now so, yeah, just curious!

I've used Rotosounds before.... and they were ok.... Went back to Ernieballs because you can get them anywhere..... Couldn't tell the difference between the brands. I'm considering going to D'addario because there off the shelf sets seem to make more sence in some ways.... I really don't know.... I wouldn't have thought brands of strings would make a massive difference but I guess of all the things on your guitar, you actually have to touch them all the time. And yeah I also have sweaty hands, my strings seem to go "black" after a short amount of time so recommendations for different strings or even tips for stopping this^^ from happening would be helpful :) Cheers JJ

I'm all about the elixers. The nanowebs do peel, but you'd have to be doing some crazy pick scrapes to get the polywebs to peel. And for me, they last like 5x what a normal string does, and not having to change strings as often is just amazing for lazy people like me. I'll have to give those D'Addario ones a shot though.

My favorite strings are D'Addario jazz mediums, 11-49. While I'm not a gigging guitarist, the only times I've broken strings were at friction points (saddles, tuners, etc.). Other than that, they've always felt great and sounded great for my purposes. I've used Ernie Ball "Not Even Slinky" 12's with a plain G for when I used to tune down to C# standard. Did that only because I couldn't find many sets of strings in a higher gauge without a wound G. I can't bend a wound G-string all that well.

I'd recommend giving String Joy a try. They are a bit pricier and I'm cheap, so I was hesitant, but I love them. I've bought a few sets of D'addario and Ernie Ball strings with poor Nickle plating that have been dead in hours. These guys have amazing QC though. Also, you can order custom sets and they stock a much wider selection of gauges.

I pretty much agree with your assessment. I’ve been playing for guitar about 40 years and added bass guitar to my repertoire about 30 years ago; I have the same Alien Xenomorph acid blood for perspiration. D’Addario makes the best strings for my purposes. Never cared for Elixirs. GHS Boomers work in a pinch and are less pricey than most of the others. In spite of the price, the NYXLs last double what any other string does for me. I do need to try the XTs.

Well I've only been playing for 4 months now, and the only strings that I have ever used have been the ones that came as standard on my 100 quid squire, which were presumably pretty poor, but they did the job for the first couple of months before I replaced them, and the rotosound strings which I went for next. I only went for those ones because they only had a very limited choice at my local music shop. I wanted to try some slightly lighter gauge strings than the ones which came as standard, since I figured that as a beginner, the lighter ones would be easier going on my weak, underdeveloped fretting hand. I was correct. They only had 2 different kinds of strings in 8 gauge, and the rotosound ones were cheaper, so I tried those ones, and they still feel great, definitely an improvement on the cheapo stock ones. I would buy them again, however I will be considering other brands next time, to see how they fare.

To me, Dean Markley's belongs in the same spot where you put Dunlops. That being said, Dunlops are my actual favourite, especially on bass (they're the only brand I can think of that makes a well thought 55-115 gauge). For guitars I use the 11-50 set in drop B, tried the standard ones and gave the heavy core a try very recently (they've been on for 3 days as I'm writing). How long has it been since you've tried a set ? Maybe they've improved because I can't agree with anything you said in my experience. That being said, you use 10's and D'addario is a great brand too so you may not have any interest in giving Dunlop another try.

I use NYXL’s on my guitars and basses. I dont spend more than what they cost on “premium” stuff because I work so much and dont get to play as much anymore. If I ever find myself with a lot of free time and can play regularly, I’ll experiment more. I used to use Earnie Ball, and switched on a whim and just stuck with em. I like both though. For my purposes since I dont play much, the NYXL’s seem to keep a bright tone slightly longer, but never noticed a difference in sound really. If there was one, I cant hear it very well.
