About me:
My name is Brandon Paul and I love all things music. I am a long time guitarist, singer, guitar teacher, live/touring performer and love nothing more than to express my passion through the power of music! When I am not performing or touring, I am always teaching guitar lessons online and out of my music studio! I am humbled to educate students and help them progress on their musical journeys. I started out as an traveling basketball player at a young age and then transposed to a musician around the age of 16. Not an easy transition, but my burning passion transferred over from sports into making music for a living. Anything is truly possible, and it's NEVER too late! I am grateful for all the support across my social media and through my musical endeavors. You can find me anywhere online @brandonpaulofficial and my music on any digital platform (Spotify, iTunes, etc.). Thanks for supporting and becoming a friend! Much love,
BP

I am a pianist with no conceivable guitar skills whatsoever so I may be just pulling this out of my ass, but to me what has always separated Randy from everyone else is how "clean" he plays. Every note has a distinct start and finish and they never run together. To my layman ears, the level of precision that you hear when Randy is playing is unmatched by anyone else I have heard, Eddie Van Halen included.

I've always thought most of the notes Randy plays should be marked staccato in the transcriptions.

Delores Rhoads once said Randy’s posture and how he held the guitar and positioned his arms/hands was all by design too. He was astute and always improving his skills. He never put the guitar down and wanted to continue to learn from other teachers until the day he passed. As polished as he was he was still very humble. I miss him every day and hope to see him on the other side. God Bless and Rest In Peace Randy and Delores.

Randy Rhodes was a gift from the Guitar Gods! EVH and Randy will live on as legendary in the world of rock and roll. SRV was unreal and the best blues guitarist I have herd.
@AndrewJones-cx6kl
@AndrewJones-cx6kl 7 ай бұрын
When it comes to EVH and RANDY RHOADS, they are two completely different players. EVH is a lot of tapping, bending, kicked in the Ass harmonics and he invented so many things that changed hard rock guitar forever including the brown sound and how he achieved it. He was the pioneer for the brown sound that changed the entire game! But after DLR left I kind of gave up on VH for awhile. I just couldn’t comprehend VH without Diamond Dave. But in the end, EVH’s guitar playing on those albums was still dope. Randy was more of an astute player as we all know he was a great teacher for many years. He was constantly playing all day and night his girlfriend Jody once said. He would just stand there whirling out scales while he talked to you at the same time. His left hand and fingers had absolute magic in them! He was a perfectionist with his playing and knew music theory inside and out. Like EVH, Randy took rock guitar to a whole new level with the classical knowledge and flavor in his playing. I saw both (EVH 3 times) and Randy once. Jan-15-1982 Met Center, Bloomington Mn. That arena was well known for its great sound when live rock bands played. I must have seen 100 concerts there growing up. When I saw Randy Play he drew you in as people stared in amazement at what Randy was doing. It seemed everyone was so drawn into Randy that they would forget about Ozzy as he forgot lyrics and was most likely drunk and coked up as was his usual routine As Randy’s polka dot flying V nearly dwarfed his small athletic frame what you were hearing and seeing felt like a freight train barreling down on you. There was a Blizzard that Friday night and myself and 3 other friends didn’t even know if we could get to the show on time or at all. We finally coaxed a friends mom into driving through that Snow and gusting winds. I remember feeling an eerie sensation that The Blizzard Of Ozz was in town 👹. We were all hearing about the antics Ozzy was doing in his shows and the media reporting animal abuses etc. It was effing epic how I felt and the memories I still have of that show being only 12 years old. I was an early adolescent trouble maker smoking lots of pot and enjoying my early years. I have 3 older siblings that introduced me to all the greatest music. I remember when I dropped the needle on the vinyl of Van Halen’s debut self titled album, I was completely blown away by EVH’s blistering sound, and the wicked sounding intro to Running With The Devil with the car horns as they slowed the tape down, Then Michael Anthony’s staccato bass runs, Alex’s drumming, and DLR’s screaming vocals. It felt like I had run a marathon just after hearing the first two songs! I can’t believe it was 1978. A long time ago now. I was only 9 years old. But I was introduced to all of this early on. My first concert was the Bay City Rollers in 1976, Bhahahahahahahaha😂. They were so cheesy looking back now. You see, my mom had to drag me along to all of these shows because I wasn’t old enough to stay home alone. My siblings were 8,6, and 2 years older than me, so I got to see many bands at a young age. I think it was the doobie brothers I saw next around that same year. With Van Halen I saw them during the Fair Warning tour, Diver Down, and 1984. EVH was so good and those concerts in Van Halen’s early years were so damn good! So, just 2 months after seeing Randy in January I was riding the school bus home from school when someone said Ozzy died in a plane crash! I was like, Huh???? WTF. Is Randy ok? Nobody knew and I was oblivious to what happened. I was getting a bad feeling in my gut because I wasn’t sure what happened and who were alive or dead???? So as soon as I got off the school bus I ran home so I could turn on the radio to find out what happened. When I heard the DJ say RANDY RHOADS WAS DEAD my heart sank, it was like being punched in the gut! I didn’t want to believe it.🥵 I kept trying to hear if maybe it was a false report, but it wasn’t. Randy was gone taking with him all of the incredible music that was yet to come. That was one of the worst days in music history. We all lost something when Randy was killed. The world was a much better place with Randy in it. I felt so sorry for everyone, especially his mother Delores. It was hard to move forward, but we had no other choice. I finally just got pissed off at the whole event. Then when Bark at the moon came out I couldn’t even get myself to listen to it. NO disrespect to Jake E Lee, he’s a fine player, but it wasn’t Randy. And I couldn’t move on from him. I didn’t want to, and to this very day I still have that feeling. What could have been…….. Anyhow, I’m rambling way too long. One other tidbit. I had a 1968/69 Les Paul Black Beauty. That guitar was the greatest playing and sounding guitar I ever owned. Randy was my hero and I loved him so much I sent it to Gibson in 1996 to have it refinished in Randy’s White/ cream colored aged look. I know guys, looking back I took all of the value out of it. But it was sooooooooooo good! I used it as my number 1 for many bands I played in around the Twin Cities bar circuit. OK, I will end this now. I find it very interesting to hear other guitar players journey’s, especially seeing the younger generation hear 70’s/80’s hard rock for the first time. It was the best of times for our generation, the baby boomers and GEN X. Anyhow, I love your channel Brandon and I will be checking in often😊. You young guys keep our music going and pay it forward to your kids!!!! R.I.P. Randy Rhoads, and R.I.P. EVH. You’re both are sorely missed😪…. God Bless to all of you…….. -AJ

Hey Brandon Paul, yeah it’s me again… I freaking love EVH, ok some of the best guitar solos I’ve ever heard, but I must take the opposite view of Eddie’s view that Randy “stole my licks” I think Eddie was one of the greatest guitarists ever, but Randy, at such a young age and such a high quality of classical, magical talent of his mother and the incredible ability of Randy to translate his songs into a new sound, I’m sorry Eddie, I love your playing, but Randy DID NOT copy or steal your style. You couldn’t possibly play what Randy did, and Vice-Versa… 👏👏👏 Love ya both 🎸🎸

Randy was taught by his mother who was a magical classical piano teacher, but she didn’t teach him how to play guitar, she taught him everything about the piano and classical music. He translated what his mother taught him onto guitar 🎸 and his mother saw that Randy loved playing his guitar, so she sent him off to guitar lessons. It wasn’t very long before Randy’s guitar teacher told his mother, “I can’t teach him anything else” because he has far surpassed what I can teach him. “He plays stuff that I can’t teach” and with that, Randy started teaching his own students but at the same time was playing in his band. Quiet Riot… but then Ozzy asked him to audition. Ozzy said within 10 seconds, “you’re in the band” but then the rest is history and came to a conclusion with Randy’s death at a very young age. 😢🤔😢🇦🇺

I know that Tommy didn't play on BoO and DoaM, but I feel like there was an amazing rhythmic syncopation with Randy and Tommy. Tommy's staccato style drumming fit perfectly with Randy's playing. I recently watched a video where Tommy mentioned that he was offered the job before BoO was recorded, but he had to turn it down because he was under contract with Gary Moore.

I agree with him being in the top 2 guitarists. But I place him at number one, for the sole reason that there is just so little of it out there. Not just that there's so little live footage, but that it's such a small catalog... from someone so young. We missed out on so much. it's really a tragic story. If he was around as long as Eddie Van Halen has been around, who knows what kind of stuff we would have been able to hear. Fun fact: yesterday is the 40 year anniversary of the release date of Blizzard of Ozz.

This was awesome . Randy was and still my favorite guitarist of all time due to that feeling and vibe he resonates with the listeners .was lucky enough to see Randy live in 1981 in Tampa Florida on the Blizzard tour .and I'll tell anyone Randy was the main attraction in this band .such a unbelievable strong stage presence . Would love to see you do a guitar review from my second favorite guitarist Vivian Campbell original guitarist for Dio .any solo off the Holy Diver Album .Really amazing record in my opinion a true Heavy Metal Guitar Masterpiece .

Cool seeing another but same prospective as mine. I absolutely loved how he helped define metal music using a classical style. Definitely one of my main inspirations🤘

brilliant first reaction. YOu have covered quite a few items I didn't see. I have looked into this performance quite a bit and have a few points of interest. - The sound is really solid for the event being at a small TV station, It was recorded quite well using a mobile truck outside. - This was before time stamps and so the video syncing is sometime good, sometimes terrible. - The lines that appear on some versions are because they were playing at a full volume at it was shaking the tubes in the cameras. - This likely is a slightly altered version by Ozzy's production people that fixed some of Ozzy's voice issues - Shortly before this performance Ozzy asked for some mouthwash and latter accidentally chugged it all. (likely mistook it for something else) I have a number of questions though which you might be able to enlighten me - Why does Randy go to the blue screen when looking for some feedback near the end? - I see two Marshals but it appears that only one is mic'ed but the non-mic'ed one has cables going to it. - Any good guesses on what is the amp setup.

Great review. I couldn’t describe that lick that you referenced other than a chromatic scale improv. as well. Hey that’s what happens when you are trained classically. A lost art.

for your consideration, the 8:10 descending scatter... I wonder if Randy and Berton from The Knack were friends or at least acquaintances because Berton does that same descending fury in My Sharon, and Randy does it in I Don't Know with the heavy palm mute. It feels as though "I'm here and I have to get there, lets just thrash a few notes on the way from where I am to where I'm going....." Specifically at 3: 48 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eLhifdeku9vRdnU.html

Hey Brandon, just in case some people do not know this. You probably know but didn’t mention it on the video but for anyone interested when Randy starts his outro solo doing those triplets it sounds like an octave effect he might be using, but it’s not. On some of his solos the keyboard player would do harmonic runs with him just like on those triplets. It gave it a nice sound sometimes, But other times I wished the keyboard player would stop playing as it would cover over Randy too much….

While I agree the Marshalls are beautiful, to my understanding, the sound is coming off of an amp he's plugged into that's off camera. I don't remember why he did that, though.

Back in the day in my town/school you were either team EVH or team RR.. I was always RR. I was young when I first heard him maybe 10 years old. back in the earlier 80's. I had heard VH but it didn't move me nearly as much as RR. As I got older and really started diving into guitar playing I came back around to EVH, in thanks to my journey that took me diving into one of my all time fav's Vito Bratta, which then took me back to EVH and RR and really listening to what Eddie was doing as well as Randy. As for me Vito was an amazing mix of the two. The melodic passionate solo's with some Eddie tricks thrown in and some incredible Randy and Eddie inspired riffs as well. And let's be honest Randy was still a youngster by the time he died. Wasn't around long but yet he's still so revered and such a legend.. To me Eddie is the King but Randy is the legend.

Right on man. I can see how people kind a liked one of the other at that time. I love both Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. I suppose they probably lean just a touch more to Eddie if I had to. But they are by far my two favorite guitar players. Probably always will be.

@@brandonpaulofficial Same here. I mean I mentioned Vito who I absolutely love but I feel there wouldn't be a Vito without the other two. but there's so many incredible guitarists that really stood out for me throughout the 80s for sure, cause Randy and EVH challenged everyone going forward to do something special..and it was an amazing time for guitar
