One thing you need to know about the guitarist, Emppu. He is not a show-off. He plays exactly what the song needs, not what his ego needs. He has many tricks on his sleeve, and he uses only the ones that the music needs. :) If you want to hear more of his guitar work, I recommend the song Romanticide. There's an official live video for that one, too. :) Fun fact: He is a founding member of the band. When Nightwish was formed in 1996 he was only 18 years old. :)

Yep. Emppu plays what he needs to play. Don’t shred if it won’t fit the composition. If you’d like to see him showing his skills the cover of Pink Floyds High hopes is a good one. He is a very good guitarist.

I wrote it out once, I ended up making it 4/4 followed by 6/8. ONE TWO THREE rest | ONE-TWO-THREE ONE-TWO-THREE. ONE TWO THREE rest | ONE-TWO-THREE ONE-TWO-THREE. . Same thing Miles Davis did on "Green Dolphin Street". As a sax player I love Coltrane's cover, so I picked up on that right away. . Although for fun, Tuomas throws a 3/4 in there where a 4/4 is in earlier measures, just to mess with you. Then the second progression I'd write as 8/8 followed by 5/4 which is equally fun. Yes, I know 8/8 is "wrong" but it beats figuring out tempo changes or trying to just "drop an eighth"

Yes has a Pirates of Caribbean feel...Emppu (the guitarist) can shred when needs to (when fits in with the music) but most Nightwish songs don’t have a bunch of speed picking or sweep arpeggios the solos are more melodic than flashy. I always say he doesn’t play an unneeded note (including pinch harmonics, pick slides, or bar dives). All of those just fit with the songs as you listen to their repertoire ...which you should. They are an incredible band and group of musicians

Hello @ Sergey Kolomiyets! Nightwish Army incoming here, your reaction just appeared on our radar.. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in front of a 82k+ people. I really enjoyed your technical observations, you seem to understand you found a precious diamond on the sand beach.. :) Since this is your first Nightwish experience, I'll give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan: " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. If you are interested in exploring more Nightwish, best method for reacting to Nightwish that I figured from discovering them recently and exploring their catalog myself: Keep the particularly long and complex songs listed below, if you have not watched them already, for after you have seen all the more standard ones from the 4 live shows mentioned in the numbered list: - The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley) 14 minutes - Greatest Show on Earth (Tampere) 21 minutes 1- Just do all the Wacken 2013 songs, they are all great 2- Then the Wembley 2015 ones that are not part of the Wacken show 3- Then the remaining songs from Tampere 2015 that were not in the previous 2 shows mentioned 4- Then the older songs from Buenos Aires 2019 that were not in the previous 3 shows mentioned 5- To see what they can do with a cover and if you like Marco's singing, watch their interpretation of Pink Floyd's High Hopes 5- Then you can explore Floor's versatility with her band ReVamp's live performances of the songs Disdain at Graspop and Wild Card at Bloodstock 6- And finally go in the deep end of the Floor talent pool by reacting to her performances on Beste Zangers in the order the episodes aired From watching a lot of reactions, in my opinion this is the most efficient order to discover the rabbit hole that is Nightwish and Floor Jansen. That should keep you busy for a while. 😀

And two last albums those stories have became really serious. About us, this planet, how we should live etc etc. But same time he gives also some optimism to our surviving... But first it,s time for some more nightwish heavy stuff. Like many already proposed Romanticide would be a perfect next song. Keep doing the live songs that,s the magic of Nightwish. All Wacken songs are at the level of Ghost Love Score, so constantly you have to decide which one is your favorite.

First up, welcome to the family. Nightwish have an army of fans, in fact they are called the Nightwish army. No doubt you've noticed them already. The band are officially 'Symphonic Metal' although in reality they are a genre all to themselves, from gentle epics like this one, straight forward rock, orchestral only pieces, epic long songs that change pace and mood all the time, Thrash metal, Celtic metal, folk songs and even Jazz. With Nightwish, they like to play with people's expectations note to note and are exceptionally gifted musicians. This video is almost the current line up. Floor the 6.1 foot Valkyrie Goddess can sing anything in pretty much any style from Opera to death growls and sometimes in the same song. She's an exceptional singer and one of the most technical in the world today, she also has the stage charisma rarely seen since Freddy. Her long powerful screams/soulful wails are known to cause Floorgasms as listeners get goosebumps when she sings, she's an instrument in her own right. Marko the bassist also another singer, he's the one that most often harmonises with Floor and has a stunning and unique voice of his own. Emppu the guitarist one of the two original band members, the band clown, hobbit, jester and rarely for a rock guitarist has no music ego, he does what's needed. He can shred and deliver bone crushing riffs though... oh hell yeah! Jukka the drummer in this video has now retired from drumming for the band due to health reasons and is now in the band's management team. He's been replaced by Kai Hato who is an exceptional drummer and like Emppu has no musical ego, he does what's needed and makes it look effortless. Troy, the resident Brit isn't in this video, he plays...well everything really.. and sings/harmonises with Floor and Marko. he's the Celtic influence and is most known for his uilleann pipes, which pretty much makes Nightwish even more unique than they would be already. Finally Tuomas, the mastermind also known as the metal Mozart. He writes 90% of their material and operates on a higher musical plane than most writers. He combines poetry with symbolism and metaphor, he really is a unique composer. Add them all together you get Nightwish, the band has had more than it's fair amount of strife with singers in the past just comes back better and more powerful than before. Anything from Waken 2013, Wembley 2015 or Buenos Aires 2018 is pretty much gold standard Nightwish. They also have a new album released in April 2020 (Human Nature) which show's their technical prowess and lots of different styles including a 30+ min orchestral song.

Emppu wears his guitar very low and tends to play most of his solos in that position. He is very good, maybe not Petrucci good. But then who is? This is not an ego driven band. Solos happen, but only to add to the song. Emppu can shred , but plays only what the song requires. Nightwish focus's on the vocals the melody and the songs. Solos are secondary. Older Nightwish songs are more guitar driven. Most music is composed by the keyboardist, Tuomas.

When she opened more the note went from thin to full, more classically operatic. She has such power that needs to restrict it to make that thin, clean sound.

About the solo. As a guitarist myself, and as you may know, those guitars are heavy after a while. The "shred position" you mentioned sometimes is just comfortable. Putting a leg up on a monitor takes the pressure off the back.

Emppu went solo front and center in this piece because his solo sets up the song for the intermission style cool down. It's not a complicated solo, but it's key to the song regardless. He's got the chops to pull off some killer solos

Hello, Buckeye, welcome to the Nightwish community. Transplant here from Bucyrus, Ohio, to southern Arizona. Still bleed scarlet and grey! Great reaction and I enjoyed your comments. You've just touched the surface of this very tight and polished band. Every song is a unique and often surprising journey. Tuomas, keyboards, writes music and lyrics to most of their songs and I feel he is pure genius. Due to their great stage presence and unequaled production quality, I prefer their live concert performances with Floor as lead singer. Their base guitar player, Marco, also sings and his harmonies with Floor are a special treat. I'm a new subscriber as I want to join you in your Nightwish adventure. Keep the reactions coming and enjoy your journey. "GO BUCKS!!"

One of the things that impresses me is the energy of this band even though this song is their 13th in the set (over an hour of playing), and Floor still sounds so powerful! Also, this was only about 10 months after she joined this group. She had only been (up to this point) a "fill-in" for the rest of this tour. She was made permanent shortly there after.

Interesting comment about the theatrics behind her "reaching" that note at the end. It reminds me of music school where my theory teacher, certified in the DalCroze Method, once mentioned one way of adding expression to a performance on an instrument was putting that little bit of "struggle" in reaching the highest notes, like a singer would have to.

Always interesting to see people go through the various stages of this song, particularly in relation to the development of the vocals right up to the final vocals where you just end up blinking in disbelief. The comment on the shape of Floor's mouth to get the open sound is good - being honest though, I could have a mouth the size of a 2 car garage and not get a 10th of the volume!

According to the statement to the guitar solo: you don't need to be a shredder to be good. Much more important is, that every note you play suits to the song and tells a story, which it does. Look at David Gilmoure of Floyd, He doesn't shred either but every note tells a story and suits perfect to the song. THAT's what makes a great guitar player, imho.

Welcome to your first stop of a probably long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey. My personal suggestion for the next songs in order to give you a nice overview of some "styles" covered by Nightwish: -> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast -> There are a couple of great songs from Wacken: Storytime, Song of Myself, Romanticide, Last Ride of the Day, Ghostriver -> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look at the growls) -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) and "The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley - get to know the background of this song ahead) -> Then the new stuff with "Noise" (Video), „Shoemaker“, "Harvest (Lyric Video) ... Just my personal thoughts :-) If you'd like to hear a more intense solo of Emppu: Romanticide from Wacken. One thing you can definitely be sure of: Every song is different, has some surprising transitions, is intense. And none of the songs you're going to discover will disappoint you. About the guitarist and his poses. Generally Nightwish music is strongly oriented on the instrument between song parts, so it's just to bring forward guitar and it's tone. Just listen how certain instrument parts gives space in the composition to bring forward another one. He do not need that pose, but he do to focus audience on that instrument at the right time.

So about the guitar support for the solo. Nightwish is extremely professional on stage, in normal situations. They knew this was being recorded for a live album so they likely talked about doing everything you can to eliminate any chance of error. It could have also been for dramatic effect for the dvd.

The 'Pirates' feel you are mentioning is likely due to Nightwish's keyboardist being influenced by Hanz Zimmer. Their intro/outro songs from Nightwish's 2004 End of an Era performance were Zimmer compositions from The Last Samurai soundtrack.

You just summoned the Nightwish Army!) Thank you for sharing your reaction and welcome to the world of Symphonic Metal! Their compositions are complex and layered, Tuomas (the Metal Mozart) composes pieces that are interesting musically and lyrically, he uses orchestral sound, choirs and keys to create all those layers. The organ pipes of Toumas's place are for decoration. Behind them are three keyboards. Well, you've just witnessed Her Majesty Northern Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen, she is Dutch). Floor has classical background, rock academy behind, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. Floor is the most versatile and powerful female singer today and can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. Floor sings emotions, not words. Floor joined Nightwish in the middle of their Imaginaerum world tour in late 2012 (which includes this show from August 2013). Previous singer, Anette Olzon (she's currently in Dark Element) left the band while they were touring, and there was no certainty what to do with all the upcoming shows. They called Floor (her previous band did tour with NW in the past, and they knew each other). Floor flew immediately to help them out and temporarily replace Anette for the rest of the world tour. She arrived two days before the next show, and she had only 48 hours to learn the entire setlist. And she did. There is official documentary about all that -- "PLEASE LEARN THE SETLIST IN 48 HOURS" ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rM51q86evLGxdYk.html ) For Floor it was first really big gig with Nightwish, 82K people, at the time she was only for a few months with the band. After the world tour (in October 2013), they made Floor their official member. This song was performed at the end of 90min show, at the 1hr 10min mark. Nightwish formed in '96 in Finland, initially with Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen as a vocalist. She left the band in 2005, and Anette Olzon stepped in, until 2012. The bassist with a cool beard is Marco, and he sings some parts too. He has his own solo project outside the Nightwish. The mastermind behind 99% of lyrics and music is a keyboardist Tuomas (as I said before). Guitarist name is Emppu, and the drummer in this show is Jukka (Yukka), but later he was replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues. Flutes/uilleann pipes/guitar/vocals - Troy, he did not perform in this song. Nightwish is better live, always, so if live performance is available, go for it. In their performances, they often using recorded backtrack of a classical orchestra for their songs. They have very diverse music, from more light songs to epic scores like this, and to really heavy metal stuff. For the next step, I can suggest listening to: -- Storytime from the same Wacken 2013 live -- for move heavy: Ghost River, Song Of Myself, both from Wacken 2013 also -- if you want to see Emppu shredding the solo, take a llok at Romanticide (same venue) -- If you want to explore more Floor versatility, check out her performances on a TV show Beste Zangers in 2019. You just starting your journey with Nightwish, and be prepared to be surprised (and sometimes shocked) time and time again! Their music is very emotional and diverse. Btw, Nightwish released their new album in April -- Human. :||: Nature. Greetings from Moscow and stay safe! ;) Looking forward to seeing more NW on your channel! Subbed for this journey!

8:44 It's pirates of the caribbean alright. Tuomas the keyboardist (the primary composer of the band) had some kind of a Jack Sparrow impersonation thing going on around the time they released this song and the album it's from, and Hans Zimmer happens to be one of his biggest musical influencers. I think it's safe to assume that those films have influenced that album.

Good catches with both Pirates of the Caribbean and Disney, you would be correct. :D The composer, Tuomas, is a) very influenced by filmscores and b) a big Disney fan. This came out in 2004 and while the first Pirates soundtrack from 2003 was technically composed by Klaus Bladelt, he's the apprentice of Tuomas's biggest inspiration Hans Zimmer.

There are so many songs where your mind will be blown away with Floor. From their newest album i'd advice Shoemaker. The last part of the song is really operatic and the notes she reaches there are sick. She said in interviews that she really had to work hard for that, so that means it's an even higher range then what you just heard here. Another song with a sick last note is her performance in "beste zangers" the Phantom of the Opera, i'd say it's a must see too. Good reaction.

Them being symphonic metal allows them to take their music in several different directions. They have the long epic multipart full production type songs like Ghost Love Score, The Poet and the Pendulum or The Greatest Show on Earth.. Then they have several of the more classic thrash heavy metal style songs like Romanticide, Song of Myself or Dark Chest of Wonders.. They even have a very celtic rock sound going on in songs like E'lan or My Walden.. You chose, but the Nightwish Army loves it all..

Yeah, Emppu isn't Petrucci, but he is very consistent guitarist, and he can also shred when it's needed. Sadly he doesn't play a lot solos nowadays. But as far as the playing position comes, I'm pretty sure he just takes his place, and it feels right for him. He also has pretty long strap on his guitar, so it might be bit hard to play solos on that position, without turning guitar to completely upright/vertical.

Btw, Emppu likes to use whammy bar, artificial and pinch harmonics and tapping. I know he can do nice legatos and sweep picking as well, but rarely uses them. Many of his solos are just slow and atmospheric. He just likes to chill and fool around the stage =)
