So generous to share his knowledge freely like this! What a guy! His Mum says (in his biography) he talked pretty much non-stop from babyhood! Keep talking and keep singing and playing, Steve! We are still listening and loving it!

That M-21 Steve Earle signature guitar sounds wonderful.....would love to see Martin make the M-21, M-18, and OM-18 more available without having to custom order. Thanks for doing this series, Steve. These guitars are fantastic and it's great to see them and hear them

Thank you for sharing your knowledge on these ‘off the wall’ Martins, Steve. I am a picker up in Calgary and an opportunity to purchase an M-21 SE has presented itself. This model is extremely rare up here in Canada and the seller is making a special stop on his drive from Vancouver to Fort McMurray to allow me to play the guitar before committing to buy it. (Apparently this fellow has attended Camp Copperhead, which is a dream of mine as well.) As a longtime fan of yours I can hardly wait to try it out! 🙏🏻🤗

Thanks for this one. I bought my first good guitar- a Gurian JR at Matt Umanov’s in 1975 or 76 (it’s a bit of a blur), so I appreciate the stories about that store. I did, after adding several Taylors, and making my own guitar, finally buy my first Martin a few months ago- a “standard series reimagined” M-36. While not having the cachet of yours, it sounds very similar to the M-21, and is a joy to play. It is great to have the history to go with the guitar.

This is SO lovely! I hate how it happens that I listen to several Guitar Town series back to back and forget to hit the like button on each one. (I did do that here) I love too, like Mairi Ann Cullen below, the conversational way Steve shares his appreciation for these instruments. Also in concert how we hear stories of his life... makes us fans feel like he's a friend.

Thanks so much Steve/ you have influenced my guitar playing so much and I love the honesty and genuine love of the guitars and your music you convey in these videos You come across totally real and the books behind you portray an intelligence behind a certain cool vibe in I totally dig. Biggest things I’ve learned from you over the years (guitar nerds tune in now!) 1. That drop d capo trick with capoing only the bottom 5 strings thingy 2. Bee sting thump picks Thanks again so much for all you do Paul Brogan, Isle of Bute Scotland

I got myself a custom M guitar back in 2010 due to Steve's influence. Mine isn't much different! M size, Indian rosewood back/sides/bridge, ebony fretboard, same Italian Alpine spruce top. Mine is sunburst. I also kept the 36 stylings, so bound neck/etc; I added a bound headstock (no idea why) and swapped to a 1-3/4" nut, 2-1/4" at the bridge modified low-oval neck. Still the same forward-shifted 5/16" bracing. I don't think I'll ever sell it. Might as well have just gotten a Steve Earle M-21, though.

Hi Steve. Thank you again for passing on the knowledge and sharing some of your guitar collection. I want to find a Martin to play but my talent does not warrant buying one for myself. One request, can you try to turn up the volume on your recordings so we can hear you as you move about. There are time when I can't make out everything you are saying. Thanks and be well. M

I remember thinking as a kid that Steve Earle’s number of marriages was so impressive and for the life of me couldn’t see what those ladies did😂 Needless to say his music has been a constant solid thing and I always knew it was a cool thing to like Nirvanas Bleach and Steve Earle since the rebellious thing was there in both.

That Martin archtop neck almost looks like train tracks. Has a big sound for a guitar that seems sort of on the thinner side. Guessing that’s from the neck. Wish I could have picked up one of those M21’s.
@JesseDylanMusic Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's the neck. I think it's the bracing and the 16" top! A 16" top is bigger than a Martin dreadnought. However, it is, as you mentioned, much slimmer in depth.

Does anyone know how many M-21 Steve Earle signature guitars were made with a sunburst finish?
@JesseDylanMusic Жыл бұрын
They were made both in ambertone and in amberburst, neither of which is classified as "sunburst" (but, of course, they basically are). I don't know how many, though!

Steve, here’s my guess. You have the C F Martin Co. You have C and F size archtops. You convert a F size to a flattop. The next letter is M for Martin. That’s how they got the M.

Great video. Very cool to hear some of the history behind the M/0000 Martins. I have a 1987 M-18 and it needed some major work, but is one of my all time favorite guitars. Kind of a weird statistic, between your ‘85 M-18 and my ‘87 M-18, the two of us own almost 1/50th of the entire run of M-18’s...😆.

Pretty great bones. What a power house for conversion . I’ve got a late 20’s, early 30’s Vega Cylinder f-hole 16” that has that kind of zing. Not anything like an archtop and reacts similarly to only what has never existed-a 30’s maple Martin 000. Sounds just jumps off and sustains for ............whether finger or flatpicked it’s a beast with a neck you have to wrestle a bit. Makes you fight a bit more but always rewards and sounds great in open C.

I really like what you were doing with this series, but it would probably help the sound tremendously if you would put an extra mic on a guitar and then use the other Mic for your voice. The overall sound is kind of amateur sounding.
