An 11 year old student of mine approached Maestro Russell after a small recital in a local library. The Maestro was very kind and engaging with my young student. What you see is what you get with David Russell. A humble and kind Maestro. Thanks for the golden advice in this video!

His advice is spot on. It's something most guitarists probably don't do in the way he advises, but I think he's correct in breaking it down into very small components.

What a great interview and superb recording. Clear resolution and sound, varied angle shots. David Russell's comments on technique were enlightening. It was nice to see him so animated. Refreshing to hear technical ideas explained simply and lucidly. Such pearls of wisdom from a world-class artist!

DR mentions his friend - and erstwhile duo partner - Dennis Milne, double-bass virtuoso and composer, who was tragically killed in a car accident in New Mexico, where he established a chamber orchestra. A prolific composer (including a 'concertino' for guitar) there was a danger that his works would be neglected, or worse, but his widow has donated scores to the 'Scottish Music Information Centre', Glasgow and perhaps double-bass players and chamber groups might find them worth investigating.

Seems like a great guy. To be honest, I have seen too many youtube guitar videos, but this one was actually really good. The advice to micro study with accuracy was worth the view. I'll look for more from David.

Very interesting! It doesn't say where this is. The name Mathew McAllister seems familiar. Was he part of a duet? I can't remember the other name- if so I loved listening to them in Hart House in Toronto. Just came to me- Wilson/McAllister!

No need to practice so much on the guitar. Practice the brain since the brain control the fingers and not vice versa. No brain activity no finger movements.

I'd rather be taught by David Russell than Julian Bream any day. He lightens things and makes you WANT to learn, not compell you to play as Bream.Julian Bream nas put me off classical playing. I'd rather play the piano.

Hi Terry, interesting observation, I would never naturally think of Bream as a teacher in the traditional sense. Inspiring and a great example of individual artistry yes, but looking to him as a teacher wouldn't be something I would do. Letting one personality put you off seems a little strange to me, there are many more exponents of the classical guitar who have a similar approach to David.
