Wait, some people don't like reliced or aged guitars? Why don't they let everyone know? It seems like it would be easy, especially online. Any time someone mentioned relicing, they could pop right on their keyboard and let the world know their opinion!

For about 10 years straight I went from playing strats, teles & les Paul's depending on the band I was in &/or tone I was going for to pretty much playing strictly telecasters only for about 5-7 years, Simply Fell in love with the feel & tone of a tele. Just recently I found out my favorite telecaster happens to be a les paul!!!

Love that Neville Marten...such a nice sweet man,, his playing shows it as well..very soulful and brilliant!

Neville is such an awesome guy! I had the pleasure of meeting him, maybe 15-20 years ago at a blues workshop he was running in London. He was so humble and knowledgeable. He came across like he genuinely just wanted to share his knowledge and jam with everyone at the workshop. Class act.

Mick… You guys have been giving some love to Gibson for a while now and it’s nice to see because you grew up as a Strat player and Dan as a Tele guy. I’ve been watching the show since the beginning and grew up a Gibby player. So to see you guys do these episodes on the 335, LP, P90s etc has been a real treat for me and I’m sure for many other viewers.

I own the blonde 1960 Gibson ES-335: I love that ability to get a great sustain going into a feedback at anytime It play by itself.The CS ES-335 SOUNDS,,, are Unsurpassable! Nice VIDEO!

That black Murphy Lab sounds incredibly musical and ear pleasing. It just has that cut, chirp, that awesome fatness and yet articulation at the same time that you rarely see on such guitars. Incredible workmanship and absolute treasure to hold on to! Only if they were making them in lefty... One can dream though.

I bought a Yamaha 1978 SA700 a while ago.. Just on a whim. Fell in love immediately. Put in Monty’s PAFs and 50s wiring. TonePro bridge and tailpiece and Grover tuners.. All in cost me £1500…. It’s the best guitar I have ever played. Consequently sold my 4 SGs my R8 and my Tele.. Just for anyone who ain’t got four and a half grand to spare…

Been a fan of Neville for years bought a Les Paul studio gem and jcm 600 after the reviews he did back in the day, and love what he did with Mick bk in the day.

Happy to confirm that EC’s 335 had nylon saddles. The guitar is now in a glass case at the Hollywood Guitar Center. P.S. It’s also in much better nick than Mr Murphy’s guitars without any checking or noticeable dings.

I think the black one sounds amazing very vintage and airy sound and it does have honkiness to it. That guitar you could play in any kind of music.

My 2016 Les Paul has that cracking in the lacquer and I bloody love it! I highly recommend spending literally all the money you have on a USA-made guitar then playing in your attic!

When comparing Les Pauls I like to play the intro from "All Right Now". It's become my reference for what I like in a les paul and it sounds so great!

Around 55mins noticed Nev picking exactly midway between the two pickups and Mick more like back edge of the neck pickup. So much is in the playing approach.

I’ve been waiting to get into my local shop to try out 335s & Heritage H-535. They are still doing online only. Echoing Neville, when you spend that kind of money you’ve gotta play it and know it’s the one. Here’s to hoping Eddie’s Guitars in St Louis can safely open soon bc I want one and I’ve saved up. Maybe they’ll have a used Collings I-35 by time I get a chance to compare and purchase.

That gold top is still peerless. Just spectacular.

Using different amps skews the comparison. As does, as mentioned different players, pick attack,etc. But having said that, both sound amazing! Well played guys and thanks for sharing this in depth sharing.

Really enjoyed this! God, I want a ML Gibson!!! However listening to it all, it’s cured me of my 335 G.A.S for now and instead, I’ll try and be more versatile with my LP. Would love to see more of this on TPS…

So awesome to see you guys together again! Too bad these are mainly for doctors, lawyers, and dentists, (and car salesman nowadays).

One of the reasons why vintage PAF humbuckers sound so articulate and airy: they are not potted with wax. That detail almost NEVER gets mentioned. It is the plow that broke the plains with regards to humbuckers. You can use all the unicorn tears and pixie dust, market them as hand-wound (NO pickups are hand wound. They are ALL wound on machines) and if they're not wax potted they will sound significantly different than a potted pickup. Tone is subjective and a high-gain metal player for example would naturally want a potted pickup, but it's very frustrating to watch pickup comparisons where one is potted and one is not and tonal differences are explained entirely by materials or, my favorite, the type of wood. All of those things factor into the sound but potting makes a HUGE difference and is almost never mentioned. Thank you for addressing it here!

The Gibson 335. The Burst killer. Less weight and much more versatile.

Of course always great to see Tone Lounge with Nev.. Where's Richard Barrett?... Hopefully both Nev and Richard can make an appearance on TPS.

I have a cherry red 335 made in Memphis when they first started making them and man that thing is absolutely glorious through my AC30. I run it with a Mudhoney, TS9, and Wampler Sovereign with a Hughes and Kettner Rotosphere and Boss DD6 and it's so ridiculously powerful. I've also got the Sola Sound MKII Hybrid and managed to score a Boss Tone Bender as well and I can't wait to hear what it sounds like with that.

The finishes seen close up look great. They show the wood itself. I think black wins though overall for tone and sustain, and it just looks cool.

Burst LP a bit more bottom end that the Gold top. Black 335 slightly brighter less honk than others. Dynamic envelope of the picked notes different from semi-hollow to solid construction, but they’re all the same scale, similar timbers, pickups and wiring, all tune-o-matic bridge so not at all far apart. Different players, different amps and tone settings and there are so many more variables in the mix that comparison becomes harder still. Very cool to watch and listen to and beautiful instruments!👏

Great video. Hi, Mick! Nev, thanks for lending Mick the Lester. Love the tones. For the relic commentary, I bought a recent Vintera Road Worn 60s Strat. It's a nice guitar, but the belt-sander wear on the body is just ridiculous. Tone it waaaaaaay back, Fender. A few dings and some nitro cracks is plenty.

I genuinely don’t understand why a LP 59 burst goes for way more money than a 59 Es335? 🤷‍♂️ hands down they sound so much better and are way more versatile. They really are burst killers

Really recommend Eastman guitars, incredible guitars and super value. They do some amazing 335 styles that are just full of mojo and tone 👍

Pedant alert: Keith's Black ES was a 1959 355; Johnny Marr had one too but sold to John Shanks who also has a 1960 factory black 355. I have a '64 factory refin'ed black 345 like Barrie Cadogan; looks and sounds very cool.

I always regret not having moaned enough at my dad to lend me the money to buy what looked (strangely at the time) like an early 52 gold top Gibson Les Paul with an unbound, dotted neck (with a headstock like a Melody Maker) from Westside Music for £250 back in the early 70's

1.10.40 Yep, I got a reliced guitar not so much because of the looks but because I didn't want to worry about dinging it.

Excellent video. I'd never looked at ES-335s before and only seen 2 people play them (BB King & Justin Hayward). They sound lovely! On the subject of dinging guitars I remember getting my Les Paul. I opened the case, put it against a chair to photograph & it promptly fell over! Ding issue solved. When, however, it comes to relics, I get why people like them, summed up very well in this video. However what irritated me is with heavy relics, the ridiculous cost for so much relicing, wouldn't it make more sense to buy a cheap Gibson or Fender which you can do what you like with? The quality of these guitars today is so high that sound wise, you'd still have a great sounding guitar but without the mark-up anywhere between £3,000-£7,000.

What strings are on each Les Paul? Mike Vernon used an array of mics for Eric's solos, the subtle use of reverb on some solos (usually a couple of seconds only) was a concrete stairwell. Plus Eric used non standard string gauges including a banjo string on top E. Pete.

What all did Clapton use the 335 on in Cream? I think of it as the "Crossroads" guitar but I've always wondered if it's confirmed what was the 335 and what was the SG. Also there have been pics of him with a Black Beauty at the time as well. Then literally just the other day I saw someone saying Badge was actually played on a Strat and I had never thought that and Badge is actually my favorite Cream song ever. Anybody have any info on this?

an aged black 335 might well be the coolest looking guitar on the planet. Slap a Bigsby on there and watch out. Check Little Barrie's ES 345. It just oozes cool

What a graet and intersting video. Thank you! What this comparison proves is first bof all that no two guitars - and I mean two guitars of the same brand and model - sound the same. And this is because they are "individuals", made of different pieces of wood etc. I'm sure two Murphy lab 335s will sound different as well. And which one you prefer will always be a matter of personal preference. I like Mick's 335 better because to me (!) it sounds more like Rock'N'Roll. Both 335s are wonderful guitars in their own right. What I think is tiresome is when people tell us that their XYZ-brand 335s are so much better than a Gibson 335. Although this may be the case, it's completely off the point, since this video is about Gibson guitars. Great to see Neville here :-)

I could listen to Nev for days at a time give me a trough of chicken and rice mineral water and Nev on TPS and I’m a happy bunny his knowledge is immense and he is a smashing bloke and a great player l know the late great gary moore would agree..

It would have been good to see the guys try the middle ground of both 335 & LP. I always gravitate to a les Paul signature from the early 70s it’s the only guitar I own that is a 335 a Les Paul & a tele wrapped into one guitar. It was interesting when the old tape echo was used I presume it may have been an echoplex which is the best pre amp. I use an old Echoplex at the beginning of my effects chain which is ex John Martyn, with no echo engaged which changes the guitar completely being valve preamped.

I can hear the additional bite and snap from the higher nickel content on the tuners

Do u think that maybe the scalloped center block in the 1963/64 ish era could potentially be related in theory to how acoustic instrument makers shape, tune & reduce weight to help enhance the resonance & tone of the soundboard/top with the ES 335 & similar being semi acoustic solid body hybrids?

Reliced guitars are like stone washed jeans. Sure they're artificially aged, but they look and feel better, thus are usually your favorite to wear or play.

Psychosomatic indeed. For my intents and purposes they all sound identical. But more than happy to spend an hour with Nev and Mick.

My only complaint about aging is that yes everyone likes it its an extra process but how if all like a guitar that is also used and with some small damages and its now "own character" gets devaluated(when is not as old) being the real thing while companies managed a way to sell them for a significant plus

Last time I watched Nev and Mick on ‘tube it cost me $5000 for an R9 Dutchburst-a-like. I think I’m in similar trouble here.
