Glad you are enjoying the Dan. It’s a deep rabbit hole bro, they literally don’t have a bad song. They put so much time and thought into every song on every album. Love their musicianship so much and their cynical and often funny lyrics are some of the best in music. It only gets better the more you listen.

Jazz-rock bands like Steely Dan make some of the best music ever. The melodies, the beats, and the flow of the songs are flawless. Recommended: Dirty Work, Reeling In The Years, Bodhisattva, My Old School, Your Gold Teeth, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Doctor Wu, Any Major Dude Will Tell You.....the list goes on and on.....

Their production is as good as it gets! I didn't realize how good until I listened with headphones. I was into hard rock as a kid and never really gave this band the attention they deserve! Now at 59 I can't believe how good they really are and wish I had been more open minded like your being! Better late than never I guess. I enjoyed your reaction, have subscribed and looking forward to more.

Steely Dan is next level appreciation... Been a fan for literally decades!! You're young and healthy, it'll pass you by before you know it. Another great song by them is "Aja", from the Aja album...

Just wait till you get to the guitar heavy Steely Dan stuff. It's so incredibly strong. Try Reeling in the years, and then Bhodisattva, and then anything from The Royal Scam. Guitar heaven.

Analog recording with great microphones. The keyboard sounds like a Hammond with a Leslie speaker but in reality it was a cheap electric keyboard. This is just classic jazzy rock at it’s finest. I grew up with this band and thrilled that the young have rediscovered it.😎✌️

It's good to find a reactor that appreciates good sound production, it's what Steely Dan is know for. The 2 guys Dona'd Fagen (vocals, keyboards) and Walter Becker (guitar) were the only members, hey hired studio musicians to play their songs. There's a You Tube video on the making of their album "Aja" and they talk about how they hired 7 or 8 different guitarists to do the solo for 1 song, They spent a week just trying to get that guitar part recorded. Their music is excellent, I'll watch any reaction you do to their music. Recommendations: Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Reelin' in the Years, Josie, Bodhisattva, Hey Nineteen, Peg.

Can't buy a thrill was a fantastic Debut album for Steely Dan. Reeling in the years, Dirty Work, Midnight Cruiser are all great cuts as well, but really the whole album is good. Steely Dan is one of those Bands like Rush that have very few if any Duds! They are so talented, so musically gifted, that crappy music just didn't get released. SD, like Rush, is a wonderful Rabbit hole to explore! KZfaqr DramasydETV is currently doing what you are doing with Rush and beginning with the first album and going through them in chronological order. He's up to the Aja album (Black Cow is the opener) Fantastic ride! They don't have half the albums Rush has but it's worth doing at some point. The deep cuts make it so worthwhile!

You should take your own advice and do a complete listen of the "Aja" album. I dare ya. There is also a YT documentary less than an hour long you can watch on the making of the "Aja" album which will give you better insight to their production standards. You won't regret it.

This is Steely Dan's very first track on their debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill, when they had a formal band. Fagen & Becker were just 24 and 22 when this was released. Just brilliant and classic. The first guitar solo is actually an electric sitar performed by Denny Diaz. As a guitarist, you will find a lot to love among their 70+ song catalog. Their lyrics portray sexual predation, revenge, drug addiction, murder, and every other sin imaginable. Enjoy the ride.

If you want to follow Steely Dan: Start with this song and next do another one from this album: Reelin in the years. Next go to My old school (for added horns) and then to the Aja album: Peg, Bhodisattva, Aja then Deacon blues and Ricki don't lose that number. This song is about addictions and repeating mistakes: Violence, sex and gambling.....and we do it again (repeat the same mistakes) even though we don't want to.

Go on to Wikipedia and look up albums released in 1972 and you’ll find that there’s a lot of easy listening music there. 1972 was a very chill time. I was only five but my older brothers and sisters had just about every album from 1972 between the six of them they all had at least one of the albums that were produced in 1972 and it was such a chill time

A great song by SD about addiction, addictive behavior, and how we as human indulge in such negative behaviors because it's comforting, familiar, or necessary to our personality. More please. The entire Aja album is a good start. SD songs are better appreciated with lyric videos. Also listen to "Reelin' In The Years" and "Dirty Work", their two other big hits from this album.

I love Steely Dan, but you asked for other suggestions, so here goes. Please take a moment to listen to Beth Hart. She’s quite possibly the best female blues singers of all time. Her voice is sweet, melodic, smoky, powerful, raspy, and just plain mesmerizing. Also anything she does with guitarist Joe Bonomassa is simply amazing. Thanks for your consideration.
