I think you're being generous with how that would actually sound. Since that guitar is not even plugged anywhere it would sound like just raw strings being sorta strung on

Otto has simply mastered his own strings. People who play standard tuning couldnt ever possibly understand especially if I described it. Its way too much genius.

It does sound kind of expressive. It sounds like a noisy thrash or death metal solo. Or something that can built up to something more melodic. Afro-glam metal band Living Colour likes solos like that. The band Porcupine Tree also sometimes like to put dissonant guitar solos to contrast with their typical melodic sound and atmosphere.

I think the bigger question is how he managed to play the guitar like that without it being plugged into anything.

People have made drum and trombone equivalents, but the guitar is the one instrument that is truly NEVER animated correctly. The finger positions and rhythms make it way, way too expensive

I think the fact that the guitar is an SG with a reverse Fender headstock, two single coils and a Fender trem block with the bar on the wrong side should have given it away

This is SO GOOD! First off the solo is nailed but the ending of the video had me dying laughing. Keep it up great video!!

What you have to keep in mind is that this was the early '90s. Otto was probably toking on that bus, and everyone else on that bus was affected as well. Therefore the sound we're hearing is impressionistic, not realistic. Which, you try drawing 30 times per second. It's a terrible strain on the animators' wrists.

They only try to do finger movements that go in time with what’s being played. Where his hand actually is on the frets or if it’s a piano then on the keys usually stays in one spot (most of the times wherever they first grabbed it at it stays)

I've listened through so much guitar and rock that at this point that last clip seems more interesting to me than the original

It’s because the animators are not guitarists. They are animators. Also something to consider is they may not have had the guitar music sent to them yet. Wouldn’t be uncommon to just be told “it’s 5 seconds of guitar playing”.

Nice vid. This has always bothered me, not so much in animation, but in films. You can tell in certain films, how it's clear that no one on set has ever picked up a guitar before. In fact I will judge the quality of a film by how well or badly the guitar is done. I have walked out of films over it in the past..

Actually Metalocalypse took great care to animate the guitar animations accurately; they are literally the only ones I know of to have done this however.

If anyone has seen Metalocalypse, it’s one of the few shows I know of where the guitar playing is correctly synchronised with the actual guitar notes.

The only cartoon that I've seen that halfway got the animations of playing guitar correct.

I like to think that's what he was actually playing, but he heard your version in his mind then the children clapped out of politeness.

I've done some animations, and i'll tell you, the animators can't be fucked to animate it correctly unless they're told to. and with a weekly upload schedule they have to follow, something like correctly animating music playing is usually ignored. love your cover tho, sounded awesome

I saw guitar perfectly animated once. In a French cartoon titled Lastman. They were chords only but the animation matched perfectly with the music.

Gonna be the pedantic party pooper and say yes obviously the guitar playing isn't animated correctly, but there is still _some_ correspondence between what the animators are doing and what we're hearing. Really look at Otto's three fingers on the seven fret fingerboard (lol) -- if it were transcribed more studiously it wouldn't be just noise, it'd be a bunch of noodling on pentatonic shapes on the first five frets of the guitar. Now I want to see what Lisa's hands are doing when she's playing that one protest song outside the power plant and also throws in a little Classical Gas per audience request lol
