Featured is the Fischer Random chess game (25+10) between Gukesh D and Ding Liren from the 2024 Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge. The initial arrangement closely resembles regular chess, except for the oddly placed knights at e1/e8. The opening resembles an accelerated version of the English. Gukesh gains a decisive advantage by move 12 and maintains it throughout. Due to Gukesh's solid and logical play, Ding Liren was never given even a shadow of an opportunity for counterplay.

@chessnetwork You didn't ask, but G.O.A.T.'s origin goes back to 2000 (It was an album title of LL Cool J's 8th album). Since that album, that term has been used to describe anyone who is the best of the best in their craft across all time spans

That's incorrect. GOAT was first used as an acronym by Muhammad Ali's wife, Lonnie, to name the umbrella company for Ali's IP rights in 1992.

I don't like how they use the term "freestyle chess". Freestyle implies I can set the pieces up any way I want. Why don't they just call it by either of its actual names.

I believe that chess needs to change to random starting position like this one so opening theory would be minimum. As it is right now there is a lot of players playing by remembering the moves, not thinking

Thanks, Jerry. Sacrificing the exchange to get the e pawn with check leapt out me. Strange that ding would leave that pawn unguarded, especially as a central pawn whose loss really weakened the King side . Beginners rule: don't capture a piece that improves your opponents pieces which he promptly does by bringing white's queen up to b5. Let's hope he just didn't care and mailed this one in, because you're right that wasn't even close and a poorly played game by ding in my view.

Though not a fan of this bastardised variant of the great game (LIV chess?), I do have a lot of time for both these players. Gukesh? Love his deep, thoughtful, calm approach in serious contests (as evinced in the Candidates) - and, considering his age and capacity to reach a much higher level looking forward, I'm confident he'll have his time as "G O A T" sooner or later.. Especially so, with 21st century GOAT, Anand, as his mentor. As for Ding Liren? Another cool and disciplined customer. No one becomes world champion by chance. His form might have been fairly underwhelming since he got there, but I expect him to bounce back in trying to defend his title in a close match. Last word to the grand old man of modern chess journalism, Leonard Barden, who'll hopefully make the age of 95 this year prior to the championship match. In his most recent weekly column in The Guardian, Leonard pointed out that Ding's record against Gukesh in Classic chess is superior.

This game makes me feel like Gukesh has a better understanding of chess than Ding, and that more of Ding's success might be attributable to his opening prep. I'm surprised Ding thought the a1 rook was worth more than his fianchettoed bishop + the e-pawn when it's somewhat well-known advice even to intermediate players that the fianchettoed bishop protecting the king is usually worth a rook by itself.

I think calling an accelerated English is fair. It shares many of the “main ideas” of the English. Though as you note, theory does not hold up given the setup of the pieces.
