At the age of twenty-three, Bartók heard a Hungarian peasant song for the first time. Over the course of the next decade he immersed himself in the Hungarian countryside, and with the rigour of a scientist he compiled a vast repertoire of ancient folk melodies that fertilised his creative style. Some of these melodies were performed in this concert, that sounded alongside the pages they inspired to Bartók.
