This only happens in just the right conditions.
When the erupting volcano throws lava hundreds of meters into the air.

The volcano is creating what we call a thermal. It carries warm moist air to higher and cooler altitudes. Then the moisture condenses into cumulus clouds. Wildfires can actually create thunderstorms this way.
