Gun expert Ian McCollum reacts to the Franchi SPAS-12 in several games, including Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Half-Life 2, and more. In our latest IGN Experts React, Ian breaks down just how realistic the SPAS 12 shotgun is in games. From Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege and F.E.A.R. to Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, and more, here's how this iconic shotgun in videogames shapes up.
Ian is a firearm expert, historian, and founder of both Forgotten Weapons and Headstamp Publishing. He's here to share his gun expert knowledge on one of the most popular shotguns in games, the SPAS-12.

Hotdogs Horseshoes and Hand grenades was really done dirty on this. The gun doesn't spawn with optics, so the ones in the video were placed manually by the player, who set them up wrong. IGN should have acknowledged that they screwed that part up in the clip. Also the game simulates what he'd mentioned earlier about lower-power loads not cycling while higher-power loads do, which kind of seems like it deserves some credit.

Man, I miss the days when Tom Clancy still had some say over the games that bore his name, because a lot of the ridiculous bullshit in modern games wouldn’t exist. He was so anal about getting details right, he almost vetoed Sam Fisher’s iconic goggles as dual night vision and thermal goggles were impossible to make in 2001 when the game was being developed. He only relented because Ubisoft devs convinced him that physically switching goggles would slow the gameplay down too much. Ironically, those goggles would be invented in real life at around 2004. Playing older Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, or Rainbow Six games is a huge contrast to what modern “Tom Clancy” games are.

Fun fact about the Spas 12 in Hotdogs Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, you can switch it to pump mode by pressing down on the touchpad on your pump hand while the hammer is down Also, low pressure shells like Dragon's breath won't cycle it in semi-automatic mode
@v12ts.gaming
@v12ts.gaming 2 жыл бұрын
The most common in game mistake for the SPAS: Not holding down the carrier latch when loading the tube. 3:13 another reason that Oryx and Valk flip the SPAS like that is that the left hand can be in contact with the carrier latch to hold it down while loading the shell. Cold War did the same on 11:01, the only oversight is that the bolt isn't lock back when you fire the last round in semi auto, but of course, COD doesn't really do a +1 round in the chamber on every magazine/tube fed guns from the get-go, so i'll give it a pass.

Though the Spas-12 is an iconic combat shotgun, personal experience is far less glamorous. Its heavy, unwieldy, and has more safety features than a Nerf gun that inhibit manipulation and reloading. It has a safety, your usual pump-action safety catch (that locks the action after chambering a round before firing), and the bolt release must be held down to unlock the feed chute for reloading. Imagine having to hold down a button awkwardly on a heavy shotgun just to fiddle shells inside. Other than that major pain of a safety feature, flipping between pump and semi-auto modes couldn't be easier and is a lot of fun to shoot in both fire modes!

None of the weapons in F.E.A.R. were genuine. The shotgun was named the "VK-12", the machine-gun was the "G2A2", etc. Some of them were reminiscent of real-life guns -- like the VK-12 looking a little bit like the SPAS, but that's just for the player to visually identify that they're picking up a "generic shotgun", and to expect "generic-shotgun-in-a-video-game" results.

There's been a definite creep in of rule of cool into the series. Especially some parts of Ghost Recon. Rainbow Six Siege is also the least 'tactical' of that series. There is that button above the loading port which unlocks that flap allowing you to actually put shells into the magazine tube. Afaik this was done to prevent shells from falling out through this flap because it had a tendency to move up when firing so they locked it in place with you having to unlock it during loading by holding down that button. That's another reason why the correct way to load a SPAS-12 is to hold it the way it's depicted in Rainbow Six Siege... almost, becuase they forgot to animate the thumb actually holding down the button XD

Isn't flipping the gun over necessary to press the carrier latch so that the loading gate will actually move?

Correct me if im remembering wrong, but the release button needs to be depressed and held in order to unlock the loading gate. Cant load a fresh shell otherwise. Also, if reloading from a half full mag, you would need to hit the magstop button on the right side, otherwise a shell would chamber when the action was cocked open. Also a shell would have ejected from the chamber when opening the action.

The halflife 1 double shotgun blast seemed to make 2 shots in quick succession, so maybe they didn't actually believe the bottom part was a second barrel. Also the FEAR shotgun could possibly not be a SPAS 12 since it's actually called a VK-12 in game. Maybe they just wanted it to resemble the Spas 12's coolest features.
