@@bobocan17 Basically just... car people like to modify and personalize their ride. If we weren't individual people, we'd all drive the same bland and boring thing - but we don't so why would carry pistols be any different? Color options, added features, these are the kinds of things that brought in "new" gun owners that never considered them before. Remember how they pushed the purple and robin's egg blue frames towards the women's market? Technically that's pseudo-gucci because they all used to be cold, black, blued, or maybe FDE only.

@@bryananderson3772 Quite a few actually - generally when I volunteer to be an RSO at my local ranges and bring a small wagon full of my own toys and ammo - people tend to wander over and start asking all sorts of things. Sometimes it's just the sight of my SRO topped Walther Q5WFMP, or sometimes it could be as simple as why I have anodized weighted mag plates on my 2011. My family has been working with the local shop for nearly 35 combined years so we get a lot of inqueries there too.

That's me all day. I generally shop around the 300 to 400 dollar range for handguns and 500 to 600 with rifles. My first gun orchard was a police trade in Glock 22 came with 3 mags and a case for $299. Prices have gone up since covid but there has been some really good deals pop up from time to time recently as well. My latest gun is very budget I put together a glock clone for $265. It's ran flawlessly so far. I have to shoot it more but, It's the best money I've spent on a Gun so far. Super impressed.

I get the sentiment but no one bats an eye at modifying their AR15s with all sorts of parts. Not to mention all the kit involved with battle belt set ups, plate carrier set ups, holster set ups, ifac set ups, night vision set ups... it's all tailored to the person. I don't see how pistols are any different. It seems to me we're moving in the direction of not what's the best features for something but how much money can I throw on it. It's interesting to see people with $2,500 AR15s that have $2,000 in aftermarket parts not including their $400 scope mount, $2,500 scope, $300 offset red dot mount, $600 offset red dot and $500 KAC backup irons along with their $15,000 night vision set up, $4,000 plate carrier set up, $2,500 battle belt set up, $750 holster and mag set up and so on and so on.

@@2amichaelj People do seem to spend an absurd amount of money on their guns, and that's fine, people are free to kit out how they want, but like Garandthumb said, all of it is pointless unless a person trains with it and actually uses it. I've seen people at local matches with almost bone stock PSAs or other budget rifles out shoot people with nice Daniel Defense or BCM rifles just because they would rather spend money on ammo and practice with it instead of endlessly changing out accessories. All the gucci gear in the world doesn't matter if you can't shoot a decent group to save your life.

Id say you can keep fancy stuff in general if you want to leave something behind for your next of kin one day, because lets be honest these gucci guns aren't just a daily thing that we can replace or forget about eventually or something we use all the time to the point that it breaks and you scrap it for parts or just buy a new one, all these applies if you are financially poor if not then go ahead and do these things to your gucci guns but for us peasants we expect it to last long and be top of the line in its time since we spent the extra dime, but if you are a man of the present and you have no intent of leaving something fancy behind for your next of kin but rather make sure you live long enough to see your next of kin then maybe, maybe not buy a gucci gun, just buy a gun that's reliable and moderately cheap if you can

I bought a Sig P320 subcompact in 9mm when they were released. It has been 100% reliable other than minor obvious mag issues during the high stress drills in windy, dirt, awful conditions. Have over 3000 rounds down the pipe. Regularly do drills where mags were dropped at certain points and got dirty! I had to "shoot and scoot" with a randomly loaded mag in the pistol, ditto with spare mag, and random mags in the dirt. Verbal ques where barked out to tell me where the threat was. I decided what cover/mag depot I ran to. High stress, random round counts, a few "tap, rack, bangs" because of dirt coating mags. Very valuable training (for me). Slow is smooth, smooth is fast

Interestingly, I kept my Carry pistol absolutely stock for years. It's an early M&P 2.0, so it doesn't have front slide serrations, still has the hinge trigger, and no optics cut. It has served me very well. However, over time, I have made incremental changes. The first was lightly reducing the coarseness of the grip on the left side to make a little less harsh on skin. Of course, I added a light. Thought I opted for a minimal light with decent lumens and candela. It is small, so it is still comfortable to carry, but the slight weight still helps absorb recoil. Eventually, I was looking at polymer80 frames and Sig Sauer undercuts. So I made one for my own. It took me a few attempt since I was always worried that I would take off too much material. But now my finger sits in a wide channel(I have big hands) and I can get very high on the gun. I also ground down and polished the handguard to make it more uniform. It's crazy how a slight groove can help you "lock" into the gun. Lately, more red dots are coming out that are not too bulky and not too small. The EPS Carry is low enough to co-witnesses with standard height iron sights. So I got one and now I am going to have the slide cut to mount the EPS Carry directly. But I am also having front serrations and lightening cuts on the slide to keep the weight close to the same. So, gradually, my pistol is looking more gucci. But I am not making these changes to look good. I feel like a proper tool should only be changed to improve performance. Though it doesn't have to look janky either. I really don't mind the trigger. But I do want a more traditional tab safety design. I really want a new gen M&P 2.0 flat face trigger. I don't want Apex. But it's hard to find the newer M&P 2.0 tab triggers as spare/replacement parts. I don't feel like the aftermarket M&P triggers are worth the price for the slight change you get. The original 2.0 trigger is pretty decent. It's mostly the hinge design that just isn't quite perfect. Personally, I don't really like most gucci guns, but sometimes I feel like it is inevitable to make changes and refinements the more you practice with certain guns.

The hinge design beet Glock is Garand Thumb's freeze test. The M&P was the only winner, and it was due to the trigger shoe's hinge design.

@@5jjt That was speculation, not something that was definitively proven. About the only way to be sure is to test an M&P with the new trigger shoes.

I will always carry my Glock 19x or my Walther ppq q5 match polymer. Both have run with 0 issues for a couple thousand rounds each. I don’t even clean my Glock really. Just oil and make sure there is no fuzz or dust from carrying or going in my backpack. My AR that i would take is my aero precision with a geissle trigger. Same as the Glock and Walther, never had an issue just keep her clean and oiled. Just remember, in a self defense situation, more times than not your firearm will sit in an evidence locker. I would rather $1000 upgraded Glock sit than a 2k+ pistol.

Gucci if you can realistically afford it and keep it for play time. A carry weapon should be a basic gun, maybe some glow in the dark sights and a trigger job but not much more. Don't be the guy living in a $ 5k trailer while driving a $ 30k car.....

Out of the box bet your life on it- Glock 19 ,HI Vis fiber optic sights, TLR7 light. I wasn't aware Glocks had that many problems being suppressed. I have pistol cans but have yet to get a threaded barrel for the G19 I have now. I'm super curious. Gucci gun- Desert Eagle 50 cal, Titanium nitried coated(gold) but a nice gloss not flat or machined look, and extended mags. I like SIG and own a few but, they have had too many issues to trust your life with them and the Army is carrying the P226 or P320 around.

Few years back LEO glock trade-ins were around $300. Some extra mags, holster or two, upgraded sights, and an weapon light. Done. The only handgun upgrade I'd do would be an secondary weapon being an small double action revolver and an pocketknife.

@@joemorganeatmyshortschannel I said poor quality. I didn't say broken. Lookup subreddit AR15. There's multiple stories including mine where I noticed the BCGs were cut at an angle on the bolt rather than straight cut flat. Why is that a big deal my bolt holder (after pulling the charger handle) doesn't hold open because of their shortcuts. Another guy couldn't get his rifle to zero correctly on a hot barrel.

No. You should buy a firearm that you can hand craft yourself. That leads to research, knowledge, and even potentially a good handle on safety. Besides exercising your right, it tends to make your local politicians angry while at the same time you're defending yourself by the letter of the law and constitution.

Guess maybe I’m the guy you discussed with guns failing in class. I always treat full day class as equipment test along with imp going weakest link (my skills). OTOH I also bring another firearm. Have had parts work loose on multiple firearms, even just following first unaired fieldstrip of new semi shotgun. Had made it through 80%+ of class, pump worked fine for remainder though sling on pump was an utter failure (too tight to have mount gun with sling around shoulder even adjusted out all the way).

Ultimately the most important thing is your ability to hit the target without even thinking about it. That comes from training. I am incredibly comfortable with my XDSC, and don’t feel the need for anything more. I hit what I need to when I need to. Gucci is fine for collectibles, but totally unnecessary in a carry gun.

I gotta say the Hipoint actually looks semi okay in that long slide variant. I don't think they're particularly ugly because they're not fancied up with all kinds of useless aesthetic details and machining, they are just oddly proportioned. The long slide hipoint looks better proportioned and less odd.

If someone hypothetically modified 12g birdshot rounds to be 7/8 oz Lee drive slugs and had to use them in self defense could that potentially be used in court as "he modified 12 gauge shotgun ammunition to be *more lethal* he is a murderer!!!!!! .. simply because of the ammunition modification!"?

I have a old full size in M&P 40 1.0 and when I switched the barrel to 357sig I noticed a little extra wear on the locking lugs after 200 rounds or so. Then I added a plate, and a Holosun 507Cv2, I reblued the barrel exterior and the locking lugs and that wear pattern didn't come back. The extra weight helped to tame the extra recoil from the 357 round.
