Some time ago I acquired this Savage model 342, and at the time I had NO IDEA just how involved the repairs it needed to bring this back up to snuff. Designed and sold in the 1950-1955 Range, and more than capable of being an accurate and capable firearm for game. This one particularly appears to have been carried in every kind of harsh condition. So, join me in going deep into a definitive guide to slow rust bluing, Truoil, and the mentality of a man that talks for hours into a camera

Great video.! I loved to see both the metal and the wood work and how it all came together.

Several things I like / appreciate about your technique. First, you're slow rust bluing as apposed to hot salt or cold bluing. Rust bluing was the way it was done "back in the day". For shops like mine who do full on restorations of old rifles and shotguns, that is the only type of bluing service I offer. Second, you mention "draw filing", I'm not sure if you do that or not but, in my opinion, it's a valuable technique to have in your smithing toolbox. Normally you would only see that done when refinishing octagonal barrels and the like but it truly is a valuable technique to be able to use on standard round barrels too. You do good solid work! You also have a solid style of presentation! Keep up the good work! You've garnered a new sub....!

Thank you so much! I've only ever draw filed a single round barrel in all my time, and it was due to it being HEAVILY pitted from sitting under a pile of damp plywood in a garage for 20 or so years. Still a great experience none the less. You can't know how much I appreciate the kind words and encouragement. I love the craft, as well as being able to pass on my limited knowledge in such a way! Slow rust bluing is an art, and I've made my fair share of mistakes, but I can see why it's what you specialize in! Cheers!

I have the same rifle but I removed the barrel band, epoxy bedded the action and free floated the barrel. Much nicer shooter now.

Excellent video! I haven't rust blued yet, I actually have some coming from Rust Blue tomorrow to throw on an Ithaca 300 barrel. I have conserved a number of old rifles just by boiling and carding, which works great to keep the originality of the firearm. One thing that I didn't hear mentioned, and you very well might have mentioned, was to make sure to dip the 0000 steel wool into acetone several times before using it. It comes from the factory with oil on it which could affect the finish. Do yourself and get a carding wheel, they are awesome! Thanks for your efforts and professional quality videos! I am glad I stumbled upon them! Also, very nice setup for working on firearms, and cars!!

I have done rust bluing on 4 guns so far using Bob Veasey's 'Rust Blue,' and the process I use isn't as involved as yours and produces an equally satisfactory result. It is better to use a rust blue specifically formulated for what you are trying to blue, as it takes to rusting easier. I use the process Mark Novak shows in his most recent rust blue video with Bob Veasey, and it seems less involved than the process you show. I add a bit of Everclear as a wetting agent, and I don't have to worry about streaks and runs as long as I don't add far too much

Evaporust also removes bluing but with no flash rusting because its not a acid. Just more money.

To be honest, I've never heard of it! Everything I do is self taught from watching others or reading on certain subjects, so I will be sure to try it out! Thanks!

Yep, give evaporust a try. I used it to finish an old lathe plus dozens of hand tools. I think it can flash rust a small amount though.

to get the best shine go to 8000 grit wet sanding or dry if u dont care about using up more paper ive done 3 sks stocks and just started a 303 lee Enfield stock,,,,, mine all of them will end up with about 30 coats and all dings and scratches and grain are filled for a glass like smooth finish
@BLWRK
@BLWRK Жыл бұрын
I've personally never sanded a finish above 2500 grit. I usually finish by sanding with paper towel, and then hand rubbing. The next time I use TRU-Oil I'll definitely give the finer sanding a shot!

@@BLWRK at 3000 grit it shines nicely with a wax coat but at 8000 its a mirror/glass finish

Do you add any of the bluing to the muzzle? Some warn it could enter the barrel rifling. Thoughts?

do you plug the bore??? when you strip blueing off barrels?
@BLWRK
@BLWRK Жыл бұрын
Negative! Vinegar is a very mild Acid, and so long as you don't let it set for several weeks, I wouldn't see a need. You can always brush and oil the bore though after stripping!

My only critique with your process is everyone else I’ve seen rusts, then boils, then cards/steel wool, then rusts, boils, card/wool etc… you only boiled once and I think that could lead to early wear but I really don’t know. I love seeing other guys just going and doing all this stuff themselves though. It’s really not rocket science. And you get a gun that is fully yours at the end.
@BLWRK
@BLWRK 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for the critique! So, I have done both methods many times. (Rusting+boiling vs rusting-rusting-rusting+boiling) and I've found very little to no difference between the two, so long as carding is done between rust cycles, it doesn't make a bit of difference,withthe exception that with multiple rust cycles, you may be more prone to copper plating. Anyway, thanks for watching. Cheers!
@bpm74
@bpm74 10 ай бұрын
@@BLWRK if it's copper plating then your rust bluing solution has copper . As long it gives the desired result. Angiers book has all sorts of formulae for bluing.... nothing is right or wrong
@BLWRK
@BLWRK 10 ай бұрын
@bpm74 I agree, with one big BUT. When the solution plates on the steel, it will not convert, thus, it will not be blued. You will have blotches of a much weaker copper plating that will show itself like a sore thumb in the sun!

@@BLWRK I am a hobbyist, getting into gun restoration and I am from India. So I have been doing a lot of research on this..I agree if the solution produces a copper coating, which is mentioned ...
